An emerging British band and their manager have died after their car plunged more than 82ft from a highway bridge into a canal south of Stockholm, Sweden, during their first international tour.

Indie pop group Viola Beach, from Warrington, Cheshire, died just hours after playing their first ever gig outside of the UK, in the early hours of Saturday.

The victims have today been named as Viola Beach guitarist and vocalist Kris Leonard; guitarist River Reeves; bass player Tomas Lowe, drummer Jack Dakin and their manager Craig Tarry, all aged between 20 and 33.

The band and their manager died after their black Nissan Qashqai smashed into a road barrier at the bridge over the Sodertalje canal, south of the Swedish capital, just after 2am local time on Saturday.

The bridge was closing after it had been opened to let a vessel sail through, and the group and their manager plunged 82ft in the canal below.

The bridge, at the Saltskogs junction between the E4 and the E20 motorways, has a middle section that rises directly upwards without tilting, leaving a gap that the car drove into.

Witness Jonny Alexandersson told Aftonbladet: 'Suddenly there's a car that pushes past and drives live a maniac. It drives down the left side in towards the barrier. It was driving at least 70-80km/h (45-50mph).

'That's very fast when the rest of us are standing still. He caught the rear-view mirror on a taxi.'

Swedish police have said there were no faults with the bridge's system, its warning lamps were flashing, there are several signs warning there is a bridge opening, and two barriers were blocking the road.

Inspector Martin Bergholm said: 'For some reason, the car drove through the barriers and crashed down into the canal.'

Drivers of other cars were waiting behind the barrier but it is not yet known whether a boat had already passed or was waiting to pass.
He added: 'The witnesses just saw a car beside them and kind of disappear.'

Mr Bergholm said it was not yet known whether the five men, aged 20-35, were wearing seatbelts but added: 'That would not have helped them.'
Police received a call at about 2.30am and were first to arrive on the scene, a 'maximum five minutes' later.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: 'We can confirm that five British Nationals died in a car accident in Sweden on 13 February.
'We are in contact with local authorities and supporting the families at this difficult time.'

Just hours before the deadly incident, Viola Beach had played in at the Where's The Music festival in Norrköping.

'It was actually the first time they played outside Great Britain. They were so stoked,' Folkert Koopmans, CEO of festival organisers FKP Scorpio told Aftonbladet.
'My thoughts are with their family and friends.'

Very sad waste of young lives.
Could have been the Beatles in 1960, Queen in 1970, The Smiths in 1980, Oasis in 1990, or Coldplay in 2000, and
peoples lives would be much poorer.

Can't understand how this could have happened, the safety barrier was down and other cars were stopped so it was clear the bridge was opening (?) Horrific sight and from the state of the car must have been some impact. Witness: "Suddenly there's a car that pushes past and drives live a maniac." Terrible tragedy and all young guys, very sad. RIP

I've never heard of em, but 2 bits from the news stand out for me.
1. It was reported to be their first gig abroad.
2. It appears they drove off a bridge that was 'up'.

Will toxicology reports be able to determine whether the driver was drinking, because for me it sounds like they were 'in good spirits' and in buoyant mood driving at night in an unfamiliar setting (not often you have to experience opening and shutting bridges).

By the look of the car they pulled out of the river the impact was significant.

What a waste of life. It wouldn't be the first time that drink, drugs, or both were the cause of such a tragedy.

1.If skidmarks on bridge/driver realised to late/bridge raised/unusual bridge
Q-why did he overtake vehicles stopped/red warning lights?

2.No skidmarks/didn't realise the danger/tired high speed/drink or drugs

When: 15 Feb 16 11:24
Hard to speculate what caused it. But 50 metres before the opening, the barrier had flashing lights and warning signs, and for some reason the car didn't stop and crashed down into the canal. It does seem strange that the car kept going when other cars were stopped, possible the driver was unaware and unfamiliar with the roads and that bridge. Or rushing to get somewhere or something wrong with the car (?) Wait for the findings I suppose, hope it wasn't drugs or booze that played a part. All so young, terrible sad story.

A truck driver, Jonny Alexandersson, who saw the crash, told Swedish news organisation Aftonbladet[1] that a number of vehicles were stopped at the barrier when a vehicle drove past them at “at least 70-80km/h”.

“Many were obviously very shocked by this,” he said. Inspector Martin Bergholm said that, according to witnesses, the car drove through the barriers before crashing into the canal.

“There were no brake marks on the road and it’s very difficult to say how fast the car was going at the time,” he said. He told Aftonbladet: “The witnesses just saw a car beside them and kind of disappear. The only people who knew what went on inside the car are dead.”
