http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3446410/Five-young-British-men-killed-car-plunges-80ft-bridge-canal-Sweden.html

An emerging British band and their manager have died after their car plunged more than 82ft from a highway bridge into a canal south of Stockholm, Sweden, during their first international tour.

Indie pop group Viola Beach, from Warrington, Cheshire, died just hours after playing their first ever gig outside of the UK, in the early hours of Saturday.

The victims have today been named as Viola Beach guitarist and vocalist Kris Leonard; guitarist River Reeves; bass player Tomas Lowe, drummer Jack Dakin and their manager Craig Tarry, all aged between 20 and 33.

I've never heard of em, but 2 bits from the news stand out for me.
1. It was reported to be their first gig abroad.
2. It appears they drove off a bridge that was 'up'.

Will toxicology reports be able to determine whether the driver was drinking, because for me it sounds like they were 'in good spirits' and in buoyant mood driving at night in an unfamiliar setting (not often you have to experience opening and shutting bridges).

By the look of the car they pulled out of the river the impact was significant.
Report khyber kim • February 15, 2016 10:36 AM GMT
What a waste of life. It wouldn't be the first time that drink, drugs, or both were the cause of such a tragedy.

Q-why did he overtake vehicles stopped/red warning lights?

2.No skidmarks/didn't realise the danger/tired high speed/drink or drugs
Report TELL DEL • February 15, 2016 11:24 AM GMT
Hard to speculate what caused it. But 50 metres before the opening, the barrier had flashing lights and warning signs, and for some reason the car didn't stop and crashed down into the canal. It does seem strange that the car kept going when other cars were stopped, possible the driver was unaware and unfamiliar with the roads and that bridge. Or rushing to get somewhere or something wrong with the car (?) Wait for the findings I suppose, hope it wasn't drugs or booze that played a part. All so young, terrible sad story.

Report xmoneyx • February 15, 2016 11:41 AM GMT
A truck driver, Jonny Alexandersson, who saw the crash, told Swedish news organisation Aftonbladet[1] that a number of vehicles were stopped at the barrier when a vehicle drove past them at “at least 70-80km/h”.

“Many were obviously very shocked by this,” he said. Inspector Martin Bergholm said that, according to witnesses, the car drove through the barriers before crashing into the canal.

“There were no brake marks on the road and it’s very difficult to say how fast the car was going at the time,” he said. He told Aftonbladet: “The witnesses just saw a car beside them and kind of disappear. The only people who knew what went on inside the car are dead.”

personally I never got any sentiment in songs, I felt it all cliche and all done to death.
Each songwriter thinks they were the first to feel what ever inspired them but they are too late its all been done.

I think therefore rhythm and the tune is the most important part of any composition, and when you think about it its intrinsic.

they shpuld have reported this differently . Maybe 5 musicians ,or 5 young Brits in  accident.

First report said 'killed in Sweden rather than killed in accident ,which suggested to me that theyu may have been gunned down etc .

I'm pretty rubbish at English language ,but  folk writing headlines should know better (idiots) so   disrepectful  .  They would have known everyone would have though ' who the hell are Viola beach ?   they weren't a very well known band at all .

Sad loss of young lives all the same .  more of a  head scratching  story than anything - how the hell could such a thing happen ?

The driver of a car which crashed killing all four members of the British indie band Viola Beach and their manager had no trace of alcohol or drugs in his blood, according to preliminary results.

Officers have been trying to establish whether the driver was at fault for the crash on 13 February, which happened when the band’s hire car plunged from a bridge into a canal near Stockholm. Police have not said who was driving the vehicle. Previously they said they did not know who was behind the wheel at the time.

A Stockholm police spokeswoman, Carena Skagerlind, said: “We can confirm that the very preliminary post mortem results show that the driver of the car had no trace of alcohol or drugs in the blood.”

She said more tests would be carried out in the coming weeks but police would not be releasing further information on who was driving.

Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe, Jack Dakin and manager Craig Tarrand, aged between 19 and 35, were on their way back to the airport after the band had played their first foreign gig.

Officers were called to the incident at about 2.30am involving the Nissan Qashqai, which had gone through a barrier of a bridge that had opened to let a boat pass underneath.

The barrier, 50 metres before the opening, had flashing lights and warning signs, the officer handling the case said. Witnesses said the brake lights on the car were not operated, suggesting the driver did not realise the bridge had opened.

After their deaths, a fan-led campaign was launched to get the Warrington-based quartet who had featured on BBC Introducing – a showcase for new artists – to number one in the charts as a tribute. However, their song Swings and Waterslides, failed to break into the top 10 of the official singles chart.
