July 2, 1990 : A stampede inside a pedestrian tunnel (Al-Ma'aisim tunnel) leading out from Mecca towards Mina and the Plains of Arafat led to the deaths of 1,426 pilgrims, many of them of Malaysian, Indonesian and Pakistani origin.[2][3]
May 23, 1994 : A stampede killed at least 270 pilgrims at the stoning of the Devil ritual. April 9, 1998: at least 118 pilgrims were trampled to death and 180 injured in an incident on Jamarat Bridge.[4] March 5, 2001: 35 pilgrims were trampled to death in a stampede during the stoning of the Devil ritual.[5] February 11, 2003: The stoning of the Devil ritual claimed 14 pilgrims' lives.[6] February 1, 2004: 251 pilgrims were killed and another 244 injured in a stampede during the stoning ritual in Mina.[7] January 12, 2006: A stampede during the stoning of the Devil on the last day of the Hajj in Mina killed at least 346 pilgrims and injured at least 289 more. The incident occurred shortly after 13:00 local time, when a busload of travellers arrived together at the eastern access ramps to the Jamarat Bridge. This caused pilgrims to trip, rapidly resulting in a lethal crush. An estimated two million people were performing the ritual at the time. 24 September, 2015: More than 450 pilgrims were killed and another 700 injured during a crush in the 2015 Hajj |

Sympathy for the devil-stoners.
|

By:
Obviously, throwing stones at the devil only makes him madder.
My advice ... don't do it. |
|
By:
Who knows the Devil might like getting stoned ,I know people that do.
|
|
By:
They love it!!!
Massing, stampeding, beating themselves around the head till they bleed. |
|
By:
Used to live in Teheran before the revolution and every year there would be a day when they took to the streets and whipped their backs until bleeding.
It's something I'd have happily helped them with. Nutters |

The media keep saying the Holy site as if it is a fact
They should say what Muslims believe to be a Holy site. The reason is of course they dare not suggest there is any doubt in case they enrage Muslims and they are threatened. |

the list of previous calamities posted by brendan is most concerning.
If only the Saudis had the financial resources to be able to make adequate health and safety provisions. |

The Hajj is so good I think it should be a daily event. Great way to rid the world of people driven mad by screwball religious beliefs.

HH sultan
I've reviewed Brendan's post and have spotted a strong correlation between stoning the devil and these tragic events. I feel I should alert the authorities and suggest that they ease off on the stoning ... it's just not worth the risk, imo. Maybe just pull their tongues out and make a funny face, shouldn't do too much harm. |

Should read 700 lunatics crushed while throwing stones at a bits of stone they thought was the devil ...
|

By:
The media indulging in 'there's just too many people' all day
Yet - Hajj - 2-3 million visitors - Oktoberfest - 6-7 million visitors and increased alcohol indulgence Wonder how the fatality rates compare |

By:
Poppydog,
yes, but the drunken Germans aren't throwing stones at the devil and making him angry. The Haji-wallahs are, though. That's all you need to know. (BTW, if you (they) believe in the devil and that he does bad things, why would you throw stones at him - a bit like teasing a rotwieller - you just don't) |
|
By:
Why do the saudis continue to host the ol' debbil if he continues to cause such havoc?
|
|
By:
they arnt throwing stones at the devil, they are throwing them at another stone in the absence of the devil.
I dont think theyd be quite so brave if confronted by the devil imo |
|

The Maltese know how to handle the Devil.
What they do is to confuse him so that he never knows what time it is. On public building that bear a clock, they place a second clock with numbers and figures that make no sense at all. This ensures that the Devil never knows the time of day, because he doesn't know which clock is showing the correct time. Clever eh? Just think where the Maltese would be now if they had had all the Saudi oil? |
