Yes kit kat - its a geocaching location. Im looking to solve the puzzle to find the exact co-ordinates for a geocache.
i have no idea what the puzzle is, how oyu go about it etc, if i knew that i guess i wouldnt be here. The co ords are N 54 AB.CDE W 001 FG. HIJ so the answer to A will be a 1 digit number and will replace A on the corodinates.... and so on. so its certaint (i think) that D E H and J will all be the same number in value. But whats the code to cracking it, what does the d after each number mean? |

If all the solutions are single digit then I suggest there might be a modular solution. So for example
A = 6 (mod 9) B = 7 (mod 9) C = 2 (mod 9) D = 4 (mod 9) E = 4 (mod 9) F = 1 (mod 9) G = 2 (mod 9) H = 4 (mod 9) I = zero J = 4 (mod 9) There may be other solutions, this is just a suggestion but I chose a modulus which doesn't give zero since "zero" is a quoted solution to I. |

If d refers to old pence then that might suggest mod 12 since 12 pence in a shilling.
In which case B and F are both 10 unfortunately.The rest look to be single digits. |

If d codes for days in a week so mod 7 we get another zero (B) but that might be correct.
converted to mod 7 the solution becomes A 6 B 0 C 6 D 5 E 5 F 3 G 2 H 5 I 0 J 5 |

I like Foinavon's suggestion to assign d to a particular modulus. My own initial reaction, for what it's worth, is that d could equal zero. I'll certainly give your brainteaser some more thought tomorrow. |

I tried the obvious of sticking the numbers in (ignoring zeroes). Got 20 York St Hartlepool.

It just means I've converted the original number to a new number based on mudulus 9. In simple terms it works like a clock which goes from 1 to 12 then back to 1. the clock works on modulus 12. So 14 is 2 (mod 12) and 26 is also 2 (mod 12). By the same token 14 is 5 (mod 9) and 26 is 8 (mod 9). |

Hmm, longshot, could the 'd' be decimal places of pi, so that:
A=2 B=4 C=6 D=1 E=1 F=5 G=4 H=1 I=3 (I.e. ‘zero’ places). |

Is there anything else you can tell us about the puzzle that might be of use, BJK? I'd be interested to learn if you have ever encountered a similar test in the past as I'm keen to gauge how intricate a solution these guys like to set.
