X-rays, pigment analysis, spectroscopy, high-resolution scans of old films and photographs, gallery archives: it is fascinating how much work goes into these investigations. Fiona, Philip and Bendor are obviously keen followers of the CCDA.
Renoir next week. |
|
By:
They found out that the painting 'woman with two dogs' had been
sold in 1973 but not to the father of the man wanting the paintings verified. The gallery would not give the BBC the name of the buyer but surely off camera enquiries would have revealed if the painting was still in the possession of that buyer in which case the one the beeb were investigating was a forgery. |
|
By:
Sica - you may well be right but one assumes that if they could have done that they would. The key with this picture was all the info on the reverse of the picture. This would have been nigh on impossible to copy/fake, and in any event, most Lowry forgeries are passed off as "new to the market" or unknown works, there being far too much risk in forging a known work.
|
|
By:
agree with all you say blackbarn, fascinating stuff, it would cost a lot of money for the private individual to have got these verified,
those experts and paint xrays dont come cheap. |

I've got a fake Rolex that cost a fiver in Hong Kong about 15/16 years ago.
Keeps perfect time, and looks so good that a Mancunian lad at the Grand National meeting a few years ago, wanted to buy it from me. He was with 4 mates, and I didn't fancy getting my head kicked in after racing, so I told him how to spot the difference. I get the battery changed at a stall in the local market, as no jewellery shop will do it. |
|
By:
i know someone who was threatened with a gun to take his watch off, that was a fake rolex. he couldnt get it off quick enough...
![]() ![]() look for a sweeping second hand is a good start. ![]() |

When Lowry claimed he only used 5 colours including Flake White he was telling the truth...the point was it was the 3 primary colours Red, Yellow, and Blue and also Black and White.
He was explaining the simplicity and cohesion of using 3 colours and black and white...it didn`t matter if occasionally that was not flake white....it would have mattered however if the it was not yellow ochre, or Prussian blue or vermillion but a different form of blue etc. |

Did you enjoy tonight's Program ? Renoir when he was good he was very good when he was bad he was bad. |
|
By:
Yes, seaside. It was very good tonight. Really interesting.
I was on the edge of my seat at the end. I won't give anything away as some people won't have seen it yet. |

Interesting to see that the Wildensteins are as fussy about art, as they are about jockeys (Eddery) and trainers (Walwyn who threw them out). HRAC told Daniel W that Hello Georgeous wouldn't stay the Derby distance. Guess who was right
![]() Lester Piggott called them "inveterate bad losers", mind you, they were the place of choice for Nazi looted art (Google et al). |

I've never been a fan of impressionist art. I just don't get it.

I feel sorry for Bendor -- left at home with his MacBook while Philip and Fiona swan around in Venice. And this may be missing the point slightly but Fiona interviewing the art historian in Italian was quite impressive.
Ah -- Wikipedia tells us FB read French and Italian at Oxford. |
|
By:
Stretching the basis of the show a bit this week though. There was no question of it being a fake, more like Fortune, or Less of a Fortune, depending on whether it was by a superstar or a lesser-known pupil/other artist. Quite impressed that the two experts had never heard of the artist and said so.
They can keep making this show for decades afaic. |
|
By:
I love this show. Just been going back and watching episodes from the earlier series on youtube.
That Chagall episode.... Goes to show you should never get involved with the Russians. Or the French... Not sure who were the bigger crooks in that case! |

anyone notice fiona and her clothes last night?
early on in the lancashire visits she was filmed wearing the jacket / jeans / stripey jumper outfit, then filmed again at the national gallery weeks later, over to venice for a few days and again the same outfit every time and at the end back in lancs she wore it for the conclusion that's some continuity given it was filmed over several months, or maybe the bbc are cutting back on wardrobe costs? |
