Churchill and Munnings tonight.

(Tbh I got it wrong on both pictures.)

I think any fair minded jury would have accepted that the evidence
on the 'Churchill' painting was compelling.

Yes -- I thought they'd go for Churchill, but the Munnings still looked iffy to my uneducated eye.

The Keating (forger) expert said Keating would generally forge studies, and would go to the museum to pick up Munnings' style. This picture was (or seemed to me to be) a study for the picture Philip noticed on display in the museum's corridor.

The Churchill had provenance via Churchill's daughter (and arguably his wife) and also the daughter of the French art dealer with the story of giving Churchill the paint. Bendor finding the reference in the BBC documentary was cool too.

Sica Dan.  Agreed, "expert" would have lost face if he'd changed his mind imo.  I'd send it to auction now, and let the market decide.  It would at least make half its money, I'm sure.

The guy in Rochdale?, lived with his mum and dad, forged countless artifacts which fooled all the 'experts', including museums in his shed. Now that's what I call an artist.Devil

Recorded this but haven't watched it yet.

The thing about Munnings is that he churned out a lot of crap, and a bog standard Munnings with two cows and a tree and a bit o sky can be had for £10,000 or whatever.

It's the largish set piece paintings with horses horses horses horses that are so desired - jockeys and horses. They have increased year upon year and can easily fetch 5 million squid.

He was also a bl oody reactionary.  Set back the Royal Academy fifty years under his presidency.  Wouldn't get in my top ten of horse painters (and probably not the top twenty - I'd have to count).  Still, people like him....Mind you they also like Beryl Cook.

My suppliers had a small fortune in signed prints "under the bed"!

I'd demand another expert regards the Churchill painting.  What more bloody evidence does he want?  As Blackbarn mentioned earlier, it gave the impression of some stubborn and arrogant old bugger not wanting to lose face.

Ridiculous saying not enough proof to say it was the Churchill painting, regardless of the fact you had a live witness saying he was there painting it, it was found in a coal cellar in his daughters house ffs !

I sincerely hope Bendor is still part of the team.  Be even better if there was a Munnings to be researched in the series (eh Velasquez?).  Still a Freud, that Freud apparently said was not by him, seems a fine start to the series.

Love the program ...but
I'm just waiting for one of Billy's to turn up ...Laugh
The forgeries of William 'Billy' Mumford imitated a range of artists including Sayed Haider Raza, Francis Newton Souza, Maqbool Fida Husain, Welsh landscape painter Kyffin Williams, and English surrealist and modernist artist John Tunnard, Scotland Yard said.
It is believed they were released on to the UK market over a five-year period.

You don't come across the name Bendor very often, well not in the circles I move in. I've just been sitting in the garden reading a book about Winston Churchill and I've just come across the name Bendor in it about 15 minutes ago.

Bendor and Grosvenor are both posh names. One imagines he has an illustrious family tree. Bend Or was also the name of the 1880 Derby winner: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bend_Or

Great series. Bendor is great. Philip Mould is fascinating to listen to, and this is the one programme where Fiona Bruce shines as being (or seeming) genuinely interested rather than just another generic presenter and reader of autocues. It is a shame previous series have been withdrawn from sale, presumably while the BBC tries to sort out a rights dispute.

The owner of the painting seemed a bit of a plank. For instance, while the expert was revealing the DNA findings, he jumped in to ask if it was a human hair; a relevant question the previous week but not once the scientist had spoken about extracting DNA and comparing it with one of Freud's relations.

decent watch but come on this was a painting disputed for years by southerbys etc so for all those experts to keep a straight face and play along as though it was the 1st time they,d seen the painting deserve an oscar
