Well buy it frozen! Frozen veg has been shown to be sometimes healthier than fresh, depending on how quickly it was frozen and how long the fresh has been on the shelf. You can buy mountains of it from your frozen food shops for not that much.

Yeh, because everyone has a freezer don't they ?

Buying ingredients fresh isn’t expensive, it just depends where you go to buy it. I used to be a master of knowing the cheap places for fresh meat and veg when I was up north in my early 20’s. Basically supermarkets are a rip off for a lot of stuff. Plus if you cook in bulk and freeze it it’s cheaper still.

EO – most of the time there was zero choice about when you ate and what you ate when I was kid at home, i.e. everybody ate the same thing at the time end of story or do without, oh yeah everyone had to sit the table as well. I’ve been conditioned so much by my mother's super boil style I still prefer my cabbage like silage lol.

Tonight’s childhood basic speciality was :-
1 extra large frying pan
Slowly fry as many slices of bacon as you can fit in the pan, I used olive oil but to be true to my roots it should have been lard
Take the bacon out when it’s cooked to taste
Empty a tin of plum tomatoes into the pan, break them up a bit a spatula and add some salt, pepper, garlic and herbs to taste
Get one of those mesh things you can put on top of a frying pan , cover it with slices of bread (at least 3 but up to 6)and put the bacon on top and place on top of frying pan so the bread is heated up.
When the tomatoes have fried and reduced put it all on a plate and generally inhale it.

LOL can’t escape your roots !!!

"Yeh, because everyone has a freezer don't they ? "

What the hell is your point caller? I've countless times bought frozen food and put it in the fridge and eaten it over the next 2 or 3 days, have you never thought of that? I lived for years without a freezer, doing just that.

This thread is bizarre as there are people on it spouting their theories as if this is some hypothetical situation. It's the complete opposite. We ALL cook, have cooked or have the capacity to cook and we are talking from real experience, so if you're going to shoot down the common sense postings here out of some childish inability to say anything that might agree with a bad Tory lady, then that's your silly problem. I'm guessing you're one of the people that can't cook...

And......

A senior York politician has sparked a furious row by saying there is no real poverty in Britain and people should not donate to food banks.

Chris Steward, a Conservative councillor, said living standards had surged, that there was no need for food banks, that they were an insult to starving people around the world, and that donating to them allowed recipients to spend more money on alcohol and cigarettes.

"The fact some give food to food banks, merely enables people who can’t budget (an issue where schools should do much more and I have said the council should) or don’t want to, to have more money to spend on alcohol, cigarettes etc.”

Coachbuster : 30 minutes at least! I'd never cook vegetables that long unless it was swede or something, just do the bare minimum to keep the vitamins in.

the archbishop and his merrymen have studied this for over a year and the best the torys can come up with is the usual cigs and boooze and insulting the cooking skills of the poor, and by the way check we,re not discussing anybody who can cook but the poorest in society, wiv all the help on here how you have all coped not much mention of cooking for familys of 4,5,6 etc,

if the torys think they are right debate it with the bishop and the rest of the people who,ve studied foodbanks closely, currie didnt even speak to the people using them but hid in the car park and watched what cars they drove up in and drew her conclusions from that

Ok let's make this clear, when I said "I'd never cook vegetables that long unless it was swede or something" this was NOT a slur on the intellectual capacity of people from the home of ABBA, or a request that we boil them alive.LaughBlush

Shepherds pie can be filling? If you want it cheap and more filling I'd maybe just make the spuds layer a bit thicker?

Let's make this clear: I'm not requesting that the Bhoys eats Shepherds, or anyone involved in the herding professions.

Just Checking - NO! on the contrary - I am disputing the freshness of 'fresh' vegetables, frozen vegetables can be equally,  if not better  for you - who knows?  Once they have been picked, the vitamin content begins to diminish.  Unless you are a 'vege' though - I prefer something to go with them.................preferably home cooked.

In the 'real word' people have been finding time to cook food for thousands of years. If you're that stupid and selfish to think your kids should get to choose each meal individually then you are too stupid and selfish to have kids. Bowl of cornflakes, milk, maybe a few raisins, banana, slice or two of toast with jam and spread. 50p a head tops. Porridge even less. Couple of minutes prep time each. By all means indulge yourself or your children if you have the money, but you you can't say you can't afford to feed people if you don't.

They don't have to get up at 5am, go **** in a field, and then walk five miles to get some water.

Move closer to the water and have another hour in bed would be the intelligent move, shirley.

It's true.

Almost always had a wife or a girlfriend, in the rare case of absence of either, I'd go to my sisters and get fed. If she was on her holidays or on a day out, I'd go to a mates and get fed. I'm well known in my  circles as a non-cook. Happy

They are better off using their money for a 64 inch widescreen  imo

I used to do voluntary work with an organisation that offered financial management advice and debt counselling and a feature of almost every house you went in was the enormous tv and the SKY dish outside.
