I've never seen this before - Wiki says it's 310 X 245 cm -- epic -- he must have left the saddle / blanket on to accentuate the horse's huge backside.

You find, with these big old paintings on canvas, that the material is very coarse and the canvas is often made of more than one piece of cloth - they tend to have seams...then the artist or apprentice fills in the canvas tooth with chalky gesso...might use a knife to do that...
Pope Innocent painting is very loosely painted - yet it looks "photographic" from a distance. Class - you can't beat this. Very understated and just spot on. That satin / silky material - ...  |

Got a photo of her holding his hand on a beach, circa 1942, possibly Scarborough where she later lived. Worth owt?

He drew his mum in the late60's maybe early 70s, Vel. I was the executor of Aunty's will when she died aged 96 circa 1999. I rung everyone in her address book to advise them including Mrs Hockney in Scarborough but she'd moved apparently.

I also rang Dorothy Appleton, Sir Edward's sister but nobody's heard of him these days, although he was a rather important figure.

Don't know if Hockney has a website...but you could contact him through his book publisher or gallery. He was in Yorkshire - last year? - painting trees and Yorks. landscapes.

Kenny - I think you should contact a proper auction house - take a scan or record of the photo before you go...it sounds like it will be a one-off item...there can't be many prints made, or many that survive...Hockney is probably No.1 UK artist now that Lucian Freud is deceased...WRITE to auction house but obviously don't send photo...just photo of photo or scan or something.
I don't have a clue what the photo is worth - it would ideally go to a specialist sale and Hockney should know about its sale. There are photo archives that might want to buy it - for future biographies, etc. |

There are also valuation websites that charge £10 per item...you send them a digital scan and explain what the item is, as best you can...

Kenny - Hockney has his own website...there is a contact address...I would send him a scan of the photo and circumstances, etc...but don't mention money...see what he says...

If Hockney replies, he might add some memories of the day...and THAT would become part of the documentation for the photo...Hockney is very tech-savvy by the way.

Can't really see him getting excited about a photo taken when he was about 6 when he'll have loads of 'em but worth a try. Night.

I think you're wrong, Kenny - Hockney has always had a high opinion of photography...just like to say that loads of contemporary artists use "banal" family photos in their work...Gerhard Richter...American guy  especially... |
