Kenny - I think you should contact a proper auction house - take a scan or record of the photo before you go...it sounds like it will be a one-off item...there can't be many prints made, or many that survive...Hockney is probably No.1 UK artist now that Lucian Freud is deceased...WRITE to auction house but obviously don't send photo...just photo of photo or scan or something.

I don't have a clue what the photo is worth - it would ideally go to a specialist sale and Hockney should know about its sale.

There are photo archives that might want to buy it - for future biographies, etc.

There are also valuation websites that charge £10 per item...you send them a digital scan and explain what the item is, as best you can...

Kenny - Hockney has his own website...there is a contact address...I would send him a scan of the photo and circumstances, etc...but don't mention money...see what he says...

Whenever I've seen him on the telly, he is quite a chatty, interesting bloke - contact him on the website and see what he says...

If Hockney replies, he might add some memories of the day...and THAT would become part of the documentation for the photo...Hockney is very tech-savvy by the way.

Can't really see him getting excited about a photo taken when he was about 6 when he'll have loads of 'em but worth a try. Night.

I think you're wrong, Kenny - Hockney has always had a high opinion of photography...just like to say that loads of contemporary artists use "banal" family photos in their work...Gerhard Richter...American guy especially...

Yes - I went to London a couple of times to see Anselm Kiefer and Chinese painter, Chen Yi Fe. Also big Lucian Freud show. There was too much to take in, but I stood in front of Whistlejacket for about 15 mins. Stunning. Completely WASTED down there for great art.

Send some of it up to the regions ffs.....also love Munnings - one eyed painter - so gifted...I've bought about 20 Sotheby's catalogues just to get decent prints of Munnings' paintings.

Also like ANDRE PATER, a modern Polish painter based in Kentucky...he paints horses and jockeys in a Munnings-like style - kinda retro...really skillful.

I can't post photo's for some reason, but the painting "Goodbye Old Friend" is one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

his is a stunning print of one of the most celebrated paintings of the first world war. A wonderful depiction of human emothion n times of conflict. Matanias work shows a young soldier tenderly cradling the head of his stricken horse, even as shells burst around him, and a comrade urges him onward. Matania was commissioned in 1916 by the Blue Cross fund to produce a picture illustrating the heroisn of the animals involved in the war. The blue cross fund has been set up by Our Dumb Friends league in 1912, to assists animals during the Balken war, and it later paid £130 for the painting. This was money well spent as the scene, subtitled An incident on the road to a battery position in Southern Flanders, achieved iconic status. The work was printed in numerous publications thoughout the world, with thw Belgium magazine Le Grande Guerre asserting, below the image Les Anglais ont pour leurs chevaux une grande amiti (The English have a great love for their horses). Over one million horses saw service with the british Army during the First world war.

The soldier is cradling his dying horse and they've been through the war together - and the horse is a poor, innocent animal that gave its best. I reckon some old time viewers, at the time it was painted, would make the connection with the Michelangelo Pieta sculpture.

Love them and never get tired of looking at them with my favourite Mr Frisk but only because I bet it when it won the National in 1990.

Very sad that Cauthen got boo-ed, and Reference Point too. The horse didn't deserve that. That is the weirdest Arc in my opinion, the way the pace caused the field to collapse - never seen anything like it, and the horses at the back came through in three or four strides.

Actually dreamt this race just as it happened on the Friday night.

There was a parting of the waves as Tremp/Tony came through, fair old field as Triptych and Mtoto were also there, used to be a group of us, all LBO Managers who went for 4 years running, 1st was Dancing Braves one with Miesque also winning.

The dat was usually kicked off with Brandy and Coffee in a cafe

You can't beat that, being there for Dancing Brave - that's the best ever.

Laddies did a comp in the Sporting Life that year and you got £1 betting vouchers for every correct answer...or sometimes £5 or £10 or £20 win voucher for the Arc...think I spent about £20 buying 2nd class stamps for 12p...and I used to love getting up in the morning for the post, a slew of betting vouches - most of them DOUBLES on the Cambridgeshire / Arc...think Dallas won then all my vouchers went on to................Bering.

It was odd because they didn't state "only one comp. entry per household." I got the whole family to fill in postcards with the answers - 1) Mill Reef...2)Allez France...3)All Along...they thought I was nuts......until THE VOUCHERS started arriving...!

The betting shop manager had to make a phone call to HQ when I went in first thing on Saturday morning..."Whit the feck are these, son?"

I do! I backed Kerrera to beat one of Henry's (I think) in a race at Haydock (Sandy Lane maybe?) in a £10 sfc. My mate had same but to 3 quid. When he went to drag they gave him an amount similar to what I was expecting for my bet. Gave 'em my slip and instead of the £33.90 I was expecting, they gave me £83.90. Shockingly, we both kept it!

Think I was on a YTS at the time, in my defence!

I remember one of them had a debutant 4yo Northern Dancer that went off about 9/2. I'd not been betting too long but I thought 'this game is easy!'

Couldn't believe there was a book about Northern Dancer in our local library back then. The woman author had a chapter about Nijinsky and told the readers to pay special attention to chestnut sons of Nijinsky...next year, BINGO! Shahrastani and Ferdinand came along.

Calumet have made a comeback in the last few years but the colours are black and orange or something, instead of "devil red" and blue...don't know what the score is there...maybe the unique colours were sold on at the bankruptcy sale...dunno...you're right, it is a hellish story, but everything was revolving around Alydar and falsely hyped stud values...it was horrendous.

Still horrifies me that the best sire in the world, as Alydar arguably was at the time, was worth more dead than alive.
