I mentioned on a supermarket thread recently that I visited a Lidl shop for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed with the Cava they sold for a fiver, along with a general, quick scan of some of their other produce.
Yesterday I went into the same store with more time and had a really good look and noted down various prices of their stuff for future reference (as I never remember numbers).
I can happily report that they are a brilliant store with exceptionally cheap prices.
For instance:
Nescafe Decaff Coffee, 200g is £3.79 in Lidl.
I've just checked and the same at Tesco is £5.49 and Sainsbury's price is £5.30
That's one heck of a saving if you're a coffee drinker.
They sell 213g tins of Red Salmon for £1.99
Even B&M (who are very cheap) can't match that price as their cheapest is £2.49 at the moment.
The bargains to be had in Lidl will astound you if you've never been in there - and everything looks top notch, like their chilled Topside of Beef slices at £1.49 for 100g (4 slices).
Their freshly baked bread looks most excellent (white sandwich baguette - 19p) and their packaged bread looks very good too, for instance they sell a really thick sliced white toastie loaf at 69p for 800g.
Their 'basic loaves' are about 45p (can't remember, didn't write it down, but definitely less than 50p a large 800g loaf).
They sell 250g packs of pure butter for 95p, 1.5kg of flour for 45p and 1 kg bags of sugar for 59p, along with many other similar bargains.
Too good a deal not to shop there, if you have one near you.

By the way, Lidl don't just sell 'bargain basement' stuff. They also have a high-end quality range of goods that look superb. All at bargain prices.
I'm blown away with them - almost as much as I was by the end of that hurricane yesterday when I had to hang onto a bus stop with two hands to prevent me from being blown into the road and squashed to death by the traffic! |

Yes John92 - I noticed the chocolate on my first visit and how cheap it was for the 80% (or whatever) cocoa solid content it is.
I'm not a choccy eater as such, prefering sweets, so I bought a 300g bag of their 'Sour Fruits' for 99p, which I'm yet to try - but they look delicious. |

Ah, but you have to be their at exactly the right time they're selling off their limited sell-by bread for that price, Dotchinite - and take whatever they've got.
Lidl's full prices are cheap at their prices whenever you go in - and for all I know they too might reduce their bread near closing time. |

Morrisons say they match in price all comparable items to Aldi, Lidl and the other 3 of the big 4. What classes as comparable I don't know for sure. Morrisons frozen chips the same as

The Lidl I was in isn't morbid. It's a big, newly built, airy shop and there were very few people in it.
In fact, it was more or less just me and the security guard - who was following me around as he spotted me writing down all my notes without anything in my basket. He probably thought I was from Trading Standards! |

They also regularly reduce stuff (all 30% off stickers) a good 2 days before the sell by date just to get rid of meat, fish , ready meals & stuff , which is handy if you live next door to one

Bit of advice here : if you are going round a supermarket writing down prices, do it with a trolley putting things in as you go, then, when you have enough prices, pretend to search for your wallet, making out you have forgotten it, then leave the building mouthing " I'll be back, save my trolley"
This is what I always do when taking down prices, security guards seem to relax more. |

Funny, was just talking about those greedy barstewards Tesco's, on another thread. Lidl & Aldi have a great selection foods now and are just increasing their stock almost weekly. You can not beat their prices on fresh fruit & veg. I don't keep a track of all their prices like some of you guys, I just know you could save at least 20 euro if you filled your trolley in Lidl instead of Tescos. My only quibble is their lack of toilet facilities.

Saw this match & more thing in Morrisons this morning.
You have to register a card and you get points awarded at the till which go toward a voucher. Nothing but a stunt to get hold of your name, address, email and monitor what you buy. If the computer system knows there is a price difference, why don't they just be honest and reduce their price. |

I go in Lidl and Aldi from time to time good shops in some ways, but lack any great range of products.
Also there is never more than one person on the tills and he/she is always scruffily dressed. in a dirty old uniform, black pants and washed out sweat shirt. |
