They also regularly reduce stuff (all 30% off stickers) a good 2 days before the sell by date just to get rid of meat, fish , ready meals & stuff , which is handy if you live next door to one

Bit of advice here : if you are going round a supermarket writing down prices, do it with a trolley putting things in as you go, then, when you have enough prices, pretend to search for your wallet, making out you have forgotten it, then leave the building mouthing " I'll be back, save my trolley"

This is what I always do when taking down prices, security guards seem to relax more.

Funny, was just talking about those greedy barstewards Tesco's, on another thread. Lidl & Aldi have a great selection foods now and are just increasing their stock almost weekly. You can not beat their prices on fresh fruit & veg. I don't keep a track of all their prices like some of you guys, I just know you could save at least  20 euro if you filled your trolley in Lidl instead of Tescos. My only quibble is their lack of toilet facilities.

Saw this match & more thing in Morrisons this morning.
You have to register a card and you get points awarded at the till which go toward a voucher.
Nothing but a stunt to get hold of your name, address, email and monitor what you buy.

If the computer system knows there is a price difference, why don't they just be honest and reduce their price.

I go in Lidl and Aldi from time to time good shops in some ways, but lack any great range of products.
Also there is never more than one person on the tills and he/she is always scruffily dressed. in a dirty old uniform, black pants and washed out sweat shirt.

The wife bought a bottle for us to try. I was most impressed with the quality and though perhaps not quite up to the Coca Cola (tm) standard it was still a very good substitute. I probably could not tell the difference in a blind taste test and certainly not if used as a mixer.

Do not get it mixed up with the dog from Heart to Heart!

Try a bottle - it'll set you back less than 40p.

The quality is just as good, if not better, on most of the stuff - red malt vinegar labelled as ketchup excepted.

    First time I bought a whole fresh chicken from lidl and it was rank! I always buy whole chicken and after reading the thread on here about meat from lidl thought I would try one as it was £2.90 for a medium inside of the usual £4 +. I advise not to buy one, it was dry and stringy and my 3 yr old said yuck mum! The fresh burgers and pieces of chicken are nice, I didn't cook it any different either so it wasn't overcooked. The cooked ones are also supposed to be horrid.

A Lorry Driver is suing Tesco alleging he almost died from a disease caught off Rats in its' warehouses.

Darren Finn 39 said Weils disease left him on deaths door.  The dad of two from Epping, Essex claims Tescos' depots were the only place he came into contact with rats.

Lorry drivers certainly don't like Lidl or Aldi supermarkets.

Unless things have changed in the last 5 years, they get no help with unloading goods with a fork truck or any staff.

All the pallets are offloaded with a manual pallet truck and the driver has to take them into the store and put them where he's told to.

Two Europallets at a time on the tailboard is time consuming with a full load of 36 pallets.

German quality will beat English quality every single time - they don't eat rubbish food ,it's been outlawed .

although Lidl ,Aldi don't stock much in the way of German food and they may pander to English tastes ,which is bland  -  i just stick to the Specially select lines - they're good

Perfect strategy. Instead of companies spending a fortune on marketing they just do a direct deal with Lidl and sell large volumes through them by being the only one in that product category.

we have a nespresso coffe machine,we buy pods from them online.
lidl had an offer last week at 1/3 rd the price for a brand we like better!
pods 9p  each normally 19p.
nespresso  30p each they must be seething!

there was a brochure in last Saturdays Times from Lidl, the quality of the paper was amazing for a budget shop.

Some decent beer at £1.25 a bottle.

I've just tried the Perlenbacher 500ml Premium Pils in a nice flute type bottle & neat little twist off cap , Top Quality stuffs

Their Petit Chebra goat's cheese is the best I've ever tasted. I've been given ludicrously expensive cheese in the past in return for allowing a prize-winning herd of Golden Guernseys to graze my back yard, but it was nothing like as good as Lidl's offering - a definite smell of goat to it, but subtle and creamy at the same time.

Their Scottish smoked salmon is the same price as other supermarkets' "value" lines, except it's the real thing and not bland, gristly offcuts.

Their big bags of mixed nuts, brazils, walnuts and mixed fruit are one of the best ways going for losing weight. Keep a few bags in the pantry and open one whenever you'd normally stuff yourself with sweets or biscuits.

Dont buy smoked salmon ,fish farming is an ecological disaster for the UK .Offshore Intensive fish farming units are very bad for everything around them and the sea lice that congregate and multiply beside these units   kill juvenile wild  fish  migrating to sea.It takes 7 kilo of sea caught product which is turned into pellets  to produce 1 kilo of farmed salmon,its unsustainable  .The farmed product is sold under the Scottish banner but it bears no relation to wild fish ,they white lines you sea are fat it should not be present.The good omega oils are  disappearing from the farmed product,its a con . Wild salmon is in short supply so dont buy that either ,but buying farmed fish you are being conned and damaging the environment  and wild fish at the same time .Also  genetically modified fish are escaping and causing mayhem with wild stock.The company's are Norwegian and are only interested in profit at the expense of the environment and wild stock ,salmon farming is a lie .Disease , chemicals and GM genes are being let loose on the environment .Please dont buy  farmed Atlantic  salmon ,wild fish are just too expensive and the run of wild fish this year is the worst for a very long time .Choose a  species to eat  which can be sustainably harvested ,there are plenty ,Atlantic Salmon (salmo salar ) is not one ,and farmed fish is are at present very destructive to the marine environment.Until on land self contained  fish farming is implemented please dont buy the stuff .

A shortage of Salmon is causing real problems between natural predators like bears and us humans.

that will be Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus)   ,they too are in a danger and yet again fish farming is a major problem for them .

they are more sustainably havestable and the supermarkets do sell wild  Pacific salmon  ,worth considering .

It's OK TT - you can officially rest easy.  Lidl are really great.

I like LIDL - It's got limited stock ranges - but the prices are right - Also the food is more European. Which is an advantage over the muck the UK people are prepared to eat. I stock up on tuna as the tuna they sell in the UK is Swill. Tuna flakes are like they mop the floors in the tuna processing plant and squeeze it into a tin. The Europeans don't stand for utter toxic smeg in a tin. You get nice pink tuna. nice pastrami. amazing chicken noodle soup for 89p. nice fresh rolls from their baking machines. Wish the shop was nearer to where i live. Lots of unusual items you don't come across in the usual supermarkets. Like wasabi crisps. lobster.chocolate gingerbread. cheap choc.
The media brand them as cheap lines - Food snobs. Veg is veg. Meat is meat. F off you snobby media judgemental twits. If you have money to waste send me it through the mail. Some people want to waste their budgets going to waitrose or marks and sparks. The privilege of paying through the nose.

Fair points about Scotch and Norwegian farmed fish, breadnbutter. Not sure whether the white lines of fat are necessarily a bad thing, as the omega-3 fatty acids are one of the reasons for eating oily fish, but I guess they indicate an accumulation of other gunk too.

Might as well switch to tins of sardines. After all, if they're what are fed to the farmed salmon, I might as well eat them and cut out the middleman, or middlefish, as it were, and I'm just as fond of sardines.

fish should not  have fat like that screaming from beneaththewaves ,look at a wild fish and look at a farmed fish ,Its like the rings on a tree ,wild fish close together ,farmed fish are far apart and separated by a thick white line ,its fat ,probably a waste product from another animal food process .
Fish fat should be omega oil not lard thats why i say its a con ,slowly they are running out of proper aquatic sources of protien ,they collect it from all over the globe ,other oceans are being robbed of basic  valuable food sources and put into pellets and produce farmed salmon at a ratio of 7:1 .
You are correct we should just eat the pellets ,but the problem is they should be feeding other species .The damage being done is irreparable and the aquatic food industry have infiltrated all levels of known intelligence and distorted the issue and will claim all sorts of shiote but the truth is they are only in it for a cheap buck and all this talk of cheap food is playing right up their street .
They are hiding behind the Scottish banner of a clean natural resource whilst actually destroying the very thing they are imitating .

You are correct in thinking a basic product like Sardines is much more environmentally friendly and safer  ,along with mackerel ect ect ect .

Smoked Scottish farmed salmon is a blot on the marine  biodiversity of the planet ,hopefully they can move the farming units onto land but the profit margins will massively reduce because they are allowed to use the ocean as a  dumping ground for fish waste and chemicals ,instead they are now targeting IRE as the next big exploitation zone .They need stopped and the only way is through consumer pressure.This fred is well intentioned but deeply flawed on many levels .

I am no eco warrior but farmed fish is a harmful product that damages the environment and the very product it seeks to imitate .

The bike repair stand which Lidl and Aldi sell is amazing value at £29.99. VIrtually the same one sells in Halfords at over £100.

I had that three meat roast weirdness a while back.

Polish employees at Lidl in Kirkcaldy, Fife, have been banned from speaking to each other in their native language. Those who break the rule have been threatened with unemployment

The Daily Mail spoke to one staff member who insisted that some of the customer specifically chose the store because they didn't speak English and knew they could make themselves understood.

The newspaper also reported that local Polish people were incensed, and that The Polish Shop in the High Street had started a petition - which had attracted 100 signatures. A Facebook campaign has also begun, and more than 500 people have shown their support.

A Lidl spokesperson told The Scotsman newspaper: "It is Lidl UK company policy that staff speak in English to customers at all times, irrespective of nationality. This is for the benefit of all of our customers as well as our staff and is clearly stipulated in the employee handbook, which each member of staff receives during their induction." It added: "We are very proud to be an international employer that supports a diverse work force."

I don't m8 or rather the wife doesn't as she does all the shopping.
We've had various items from there, the most recent were biscuits and they were woeful.
Not suggesting all their foodstuff is like that but I'd say most of what I've had from their I haven't liked.

Well, I bought some stewing steak from Lidl earlier this week and it knocked spots off the same/similar thing you can buy from Tesco.
Ultra lean, prime quality British beef.
Made the most beautiful Lobby.

Lidl is my new favourite shop in the whole wide world.

I love the place - and tell it so, frequently.
