One victim of the scandal, Lizzie – who was just 12 when she was groomed – said she was glad the council has resigned and condemned them for allowing the abuse to take place.
Her abuser, Umar Razaq, served less than a year despite the depravity of his crimes, and later boasted of ‘living the high life’ while on a ‘holiday of a lifetime’.
After being released from prison, Razaq allegedly stalked Lizzie, not her real name, after ‘following’ her boyfriend on Facebook, which allowed him to look at their updates. She says she told police and Rotherham Council about it but they ‘weren’t bothered’.
Lizzie said: ‘I’m pleased they have all resigned, that they’ve all gone. They were a total waste of time and didn’t do the job they were meant to.
‘They were worse than useless because they were meant to be running the place, protecting us and they were all part of the problem. They should have gone years ago – it would have saved a lot of trouble.’
She said: ‘I told South Yorkshire Police what he was doing and how scared I was but no one seemed to care. The police knew exactly what was going on months ago but none of them were bothered.’
Lizzie added: ‘Some of those councillors were involved in covering it up. They were to blame for it going on and on. It’s shocking they didn’t go years ago. Now I’m left trying to get on with my life. I’m trying to put it all behind me. I tried counselling – that was rubbish. It’s hard moving on.’
Lizzie was 12 and living with her grandmother in Rotherham when she first came across Razaq in January 2008.
He was 22 – ten years her senior – but plied her with cigarettes and alcohol, and she eventually started to meet him in the town centre.
She said: ‘Umar treated me like a princess and said my family did not love me and didn’t want me. He got my trust then did horrible things to me. I was only a little girl when I was raped for the first time. Five men sexually abused me, in alleyways, parks, on playing fields and even in cars.’
Another victim, Gemma (not her real name), said the men who abused her were still free and had faced no legal action for the crimes they committed.
She said: ‘It’s still going, if not worse because now they’re having to hide it more. I’m still seeing my abusers driving young girls in cars – they’re untouchable. We’ve had no arrests, no charges, evidence is still being lost.’
Another victim, Jessica, slammed the decision to shut down Risky Business – the youth service working directly with victims of child sex abuse in Rotherham.
She said: ‘It shouldn’t have been shut down because that was an agency that was working with them and trying to tackle the situation.’

Nigel Farage has abandoned a public appearance in Rotherham because of protests outside his party's office.

The UKIP leader was due to cut a ribbon at the office of election candidate Jane Collins but his team said he was not coming out on police advice.

About 40 protesters gathered outside the office, shouting that the Ukip leader was not welcome in the town.

Mr Farage accused trade unions of funding "undemocratic and anti-British" protests "to stop UKIP speaking".

Ahead of his visit to Rotherham, Mr Farage said "something had gone badly wrong" in the town, saying the scandal had its roots in a policy of multiculturalism that had "divided not united" the country.
'Badly wrong'

The UKIP leader was holed up in Jane Collins' office at the party's Rotherham HQ for some time giving interviews before leaving the building under a police escort.

A specialist child abuse lawyer has said two victims of the Rotherham scandal had complained to him about a police officer who has since been killed in a car crash.

David Greenwood, of Switalskis Solicitors, said the two clients asked him to make representations to South Yorkshire police about PC Hassan Ali.

The 44-year-old police officer died in hospital after a collision with a car in Sheffield while he was off duty.

Greenwood, who leads a team which represents more than a dozen abuse victims, told the BBC the complaints were about Ali’s alleged unwillingness to pursue claims of exploitation.

An article in the Times said Ali was once in regular contact with a violent offender suspected of abusing underage girls in the town.

Greenwood said complaints about the officer’s conduct must still be investigated, regardless of his death.

He told the BBC: “The story of PC Ali is only one part of the whole story of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham.

“It’s important that this element of the story is investigated properly so we can fit all the pieces together and understand what was happening and what allowed the exploitation to happen over such a long period.”

David Crompton, chief constable of South Yorkshire police, said: “PC Ali was a well-liked officer whose colleagues are devastated by what has happened.”

Lots of coverage today on Radio 5 about Rotherham. Very few victims have come forward, lacking any trust in the authorities.

Again and again on the BBC the victims were described as young girls/ women. Not once did I hear it mentioned they were w h i t e. Not once did I hear this mentioned as a deciding factor in why this abuse was allowed to carry on for so long.

They did say 'political correctness' was key but this wasn't elaborated upon. ( I haven't listened all day..)

What struck me was this culture of cover up, PC and denial is as much in the BBC ( the reporters) as it was in Rotherham Council.

This very same level of denial by the BBC to call a spade a spade is the exact reason why the abuse became so widespread over so many towns and over so many years.

It's endemic and yet they still don't see it.

you could not make it up

Birmingham City Council has made the astonishing decision to recruit the former director of safeguarding children and families from scandal hit Rotherham council, where he was linked to the closure of a group rescuing sexually exploited young girls.

Howard Woolfenden works for the authority as an £85,000 a year assistant director and leads the council’s work to protect young people from grooming gangs, the Birmingham Mail exposed.

His job, many times the average salary of Birmingham council tax payers, is despite his inclusion in the Rotherham Council management team which were heavily criticised for failing victims of CSE and for closing down the welfare group Risky Business, described as ‘the only lifeline’ for abused girls in the town.

The outreach group offered help and advice to the victims of the mass grooming and abuse which was going on in Rotherham, mainly by Asian Pakistani men, and collected details of the abusers on a confidential database.

Despite this pioneering work, the council run group was shut down even though, as the Casey Report noted, councillors and staff had been made aware of the ongoing abuse.

Indeed, Mr Woolfenden himself was interviewed by Louise Casey for her investigation, which found that Rotherham Council was ‘not fit for purpose’ and still ‘in denial’ about the 1,400 girls abused, a large number in the care system.

Despite the praise of the group, it was suddenly shut down by Rotherham Council and Mr Woolfenden oversaw the creation of Risky Business’ replacement by an in house council team. He resigned in August 2012 to take up an appointment with Oxfordshire County Council, an appointment which was cancelled before he started, without explanation.

Ms Casey’s report highlighted the work of the group and said staff had been ignored and even harassed for highlighting ‘uncomfortable truths’ about abusers in Rotherham – something even shamed ex MP Dennis MacShane admitted was based on their ethnicity.

“Child abuse and exploitation happens all over the country, but Rotherham is different in that it (the council) was repeatedly told by its own youth service what was happening and it chose, not only to not act, but to close that service down. This is important because it points to how it has dealt with uncomfortable truths put before it,” she said.

The former manager of the outreach group, Jayne Senior, said Mr Woolfenden was “under no illusion about the extent of the CSE problem in Rotherham when he was there.”

“He spent a lot of time going through our database about the girls and the abusers,” she said. “Risky Business was a lifeline to the girls and on some occasions our staffs’ intervention, by going that extra mile, saved lives.

“We removed girls from situations, protected them and would go out late at night to deal with hospital visits when the girls had been hurt.”

Yet in 2011, only a day after Head of Children’s Services Joyce Thacker – Mr Woolfenden’s boss – told the council that funding had been secured for the group for the next two year, they were told it was being closed down.

Controversially, the database with details of the offenders, which showed they were almost all Pakistani men,  was taken into the possession of Council officials. The database has subsequently gone missing from the authority.

UKIP PPC for Rotherham, Jane Collins, condemned the decision by Birmingham to employ Mr Woolfenden and said the councillor needed to look into the Casey report and investigate his actions whilst he worked at the council.

Ms Collins, who is being sued by three Labour MPs for questioning their knowledge of the scandal – something they deny even though one had a daughter on the council who was briefed at the time – said it was an insult to both the abused girls in Rotherham and the children in Birmingham.

Her colleague and fellow MEP who represents the West Midlands, Jill Seymour, told Breitbart London, “Those who held senior positions during the Rotherham scandal should never be allowed to work in child protection services again,” adding, “I call on Birmingham City Council to reconsider this appointment.”

A member of the Rotherham Local Safeguarding Children’s Board recalled meetings where, rather than tackle the huge CSE abuse ongoing in Rotherham, Mr Woolfenden appeared to be more concerned about the ethnicity of the offenders. They told the Mail: “I just couldn’t understand this as we were talking about criminals and terrible crimes that had been committed rather than saving face.”

Mr Woolfenden confirmed that he had played an instrumental role in closing down Risky Business but when asked to comment further, he said “I don’t think it’s quite the right time to talk about this at the moment. I need to speak to my press team.

In response to repeated requests for a paperwork trail on the closure of the group, a spokeswoman for Rotherham Council said that no documentation or recorded evidence on who took the decision to close the group could be found.  The decision should have gone to the council’s Cabinet, been discussed and the outcome minuted, but the authority can find no record of that.

Mr Woolfenden was also linked to the decision to take foster children away from two registered parents because they supported UKIP. As the director with responsibility for the foster care service, he was questioned on whether he had a decision in taking the eastern European children away from the experienced foster parents despite reports they were settling in very well.

A woman answering the door of his house in Earlswood, near Solihull, said Mr Woolfenden had left the council, having handed in his resignation on August 31. When asked whether he made the decision over the foster children, she replied: ‘No comment.’

South Yorkshire Police has covered up abuse on a “massive” scale in the former industrial city turned multicultural melting-pot, a retired veteran police officer has claimed, remarking in an interview the abuse was “bigger than Rotherham”.

The revelation by the former officer, who served for thirty years, could be yet another in a long line of emerging child sex scandals in predominantly northern English cities with sizeable Pakistani populations. It is not the first such revelation for South Yorkshire Police, who also failed to detect and prosecute criminal abuse in the city of Rotherham, where 1,400 known girls were trafficked and raped by a network of criminals using take-away shops and minicab firms to enable their activities.

A Sheffield city council employee tasked with tracking child sex abuse has claimed almost 700 children were referred to the police in just two years, but not a single prosecution was made on the back of the information passed to the police.

Retired constable Tony Brooks has come forward with the allegations, and has said South Yorkshire Police have long known that girls as young as twelve – putting them into the most serious category of sex abuse – were being raped, but chose not to act on the information they had, effectively creating a cover-up. Claiming 200 girls were reported to have been abused in just a three year period in the city, he told the BBC “The size of the exploitation was massive in Sheffield.

“We offered to form a unit to continue the work – we offered to advertise our work so girls would come forward. We were told, ‘it’s not going to happen, return to your districts.”

“He said to me, ‘go and spend an hour or two with each girl and find out what’s happened to them and tell them there’s not enough evidence to go on”. The officer refused to follow the order.

Police analyst Gary Birchall, who also spoke to the BBC, expressed his disbelief after he learnt of the extent of the cover-up. He was asked as part of his work to look into a special operation run by the South Yorkshire Police, and paid for by Sheffield city council which was tasked with looking into child sex abuse. He found that despite it having been specifically requested and funded to the tune of £50,000, the operation had been shelved almost immediately with officers reassigned to other work.

He requested a “full investigation” into the failure, but his call went unheeded. Speaking on the matter, he said: “I got a call telling me the operation’s been shelved. I said it can’t be shelved, there’s evidence here that children are being trafficked, being sexually abused. There isn’t a superlative that describes how I felt then or how I feel now. Utter, utter, disbelief.”
