The obvious answer is that Leon Brittan was not named in the dossier and was not mixed up in it. The problem we now have is that the pendulum has swung from believing none of the gossip to believing all of it.

Admittedly, that does sound strange, until we learn that said recipient didn't even bother reading it. Indeed, he doesn't "recollect" the episode.

"Don't recollect" being an age-old legal device that allows for subsequent recollection, in the face of compelling evidence, without exposing oneself to a charge of lying.

David Mellor was all over the media a few weeks ago sticking the knife into Max Clifford after his conviction. It will be interesting to see his reaction if and when any of his friends and former colleagues are charged and convicted.
