I was on a job there some years ago. It was inbetween the Bass factory and the Marmite factory, the smell was awful.

|
By:
yes even Jermey Clarkson once commented on the smell, he went to school at Repton |
|

Coach, I was sent to Harlow for a two week residential management course. If it wasn't for the dog track there I would have truly lost the plot!
|
|
By:
Didn't know there was a track there Slippy - i always get lost driving round that place
![]() did ye know that Harlow has a listed tower block ? ![]() |

Colchester is a nice-ish town though - could do with a chav clearance though esp around the high street ,still a lot nicer than Ipswich tbf
|
|
By:
Colchester is not the worst, Chelmsford is horrible though. Friday and Saturday night all the troglodytes just want to beat each other up. I ended up at Ipswich train station at 5.30 on a Saturday after going sailing at Walderingfield. I had no idea Ipswich were at home to Norwich that afternoon, it was like Beiruit on a bad day. There were literally hundreds of riot cops all over the place. I was there in my shorts and flip flops trying to get a train back home

By:
Norwich and Ipswich is a lightweight affair in the big scheme of derbies.
With those flip flops and shorts on display around the station area with all those druggies and misfits loitering ,i'm more surprised the natives didn't pelt you with special brew cans and syringes ![]() yeah, Chelmsford has it's moments - haven't been out at night there for ages |

I work in Essex, and I second Jed's point of view.
Someone mentioned Stevenage. Really? The few times I've been it looks pretty grim. I did a bit of work in Ware, and that looks a pretty little town. I'd also agree with Stamford, and would add Ely and Cambridge, especially in the summer. |
|
By:
Damascus......its a lively place at night.
|
|
By:
Stevenage is a rotten gaff, the Roaring Meg complex near the train station is full of ne'er do wells and in general the place is basically unpleasant. I lived about 15 miles from there for over a decade in a lovely little village but never went to Stevenage for anything.

I live in Chelmsford and I think it's an ok place...not bad at all really!!

I went to Uni in Chelmsford 20 yrs ago, its alright, obviously it doesn't merit a place on the positive side of this thread but there are far worse places

Braintree / Finchingfield / Halstead seem pretty pleasant in Essex?
|
|
By:
Finchingfield is a nice little place to be fair. Halstead and Braintree on the other hand are absolute khazis.
There are some lovely little villages in Essex as it happens. Tillingham for instance is probably the nicest place in the world on a sunny day. |
|

I used to take the missus to Bakewell quite often,
Tart! |

There's no doubt good and bad parts everywhere, but I'm struggling in Essex
![]() There's probably nice little villages, but towns like Harlow, Chelmsford and Braintree are not places I'd want to be spending a weekend. Saying that, I think Saffron Walden is in Essex and looks quite pretty when I've been through it. Not sure what there is to do there, but I think Jamie Oliver's parents run a pub/restaurant there. |

surely there are some nice coastal towns in Essex?

Essex has some very nice parts in fairness, the county though tends to be judged on the merit of it's larger towns and resorts rather than the countryside and backwaters on the coastline which is where i'd love to live .
Clacton - Basildon- Harlow - Canvey -Walton naze -Jaywick- Shoeburyness -Thurrock -Wickford - Billericay - Rayleigh -Pitsea - Epping Finchingfield - Thaxted - Saffron - Tillingham - Brightlingsea - Colchester - Dedham - Manningtree -Gt Bentley - even Southend isn't too bad at all away from the druggy streets |

By:
TRFC ,Saffron has probably closer ties with Cambridge than anywhere in Essex tbf
