They took the screens down in the interest of customer service ,no doubt some fooking rsole in a head office thought it would be
a good idea so as you can communicate with the customers on more friendly terms ,when I worked for ladbrokes it was suggested
staff struck up converstaions with customers regarding sporting events I.e a football match that might be on that night ,you
were then supposed to bring the conversation around to a betting market that might be available on the match I.e correct score market, in the hope the dopey bastard you have just been talking to would place a bet, you really cannot make it up how low some
of these companies can get ,and the shyte is left for the shop staff to deal with ....
I would imagine with the FOBT and cartooon racing every minute things are a lot worse than they were in my day ...

Last time I went into a Ladbrokes shop in east London was about 2001.

It was a big shop with plenty of people in there as it was a Saturday morning. There was a group of 7/8 men playing roulette on an FOBT, and the display said that they had over £800 in there.

I was in there for about 15 minutes talking to a few mates, and at first the group on the FOBT were cheering, I assumed they had winning numbers. But when I left they had £4 left in the machine, and none of them had been to the counter to be paid. After I lweft , an argiemnt broke out . None on the locals knew what it was about as they were all shouting at each other in an eastern european language.

The Ladbrokes shop in Wisbech is going to become a 'one man shop', but in this instance, the manager is a woman, and she has had to call the police on numerous occasions, when drunks go in there for a kip in the afternoon when they have no work from the local employment agencies. She has no safety screens in there, neither did the shop in London.

Nobody cares, until they get robbed.

To make it compulsory for high street bookmakers to have 2 members of staff present during opening hours

Responsible department: Department for Business, Innovation and Skills

To Properly regulate the betting industry in regard to staff, to acknowledge that staff have a right not to work in fear , alone , at any time of the day.
"Single manning" should be outlawed as a work practice, that a shop should be closed if 2 members of staff are not available.
There should be no "opt in" to any single manning policy so bookmakers have no way of bullying staff into "opt in" schemes , making them over time, compulsory practice.

I used to work for Hills 20+ years ago and was robbed once at gunpoint and twice outside the shop at knifepoint all in the space of around 12 months, (once going to the bank and once it appeared I was going to the bank but I wasn't) so this has bought back memories.  I guess I was unlucky, but it was a shop perfect for robbing as you had a quick getaway onto the North Circular and there was a particularly long walk, secluded in parts, to the bank.  I actually went on a lads holiday with a Ladbrokes manager who used to work in South East London and whom I haven't seen for about 10 years.  I recall his 30th birthday party and reconciled that made him 54 not 55.

I know betting companies generally treat their shop staff not well at all, but I don't have a problem with single manning at quiet times in quiet shops.  I'd be more concerned by the lack of bandit screens as I was threatened twice in my youth, and the screens at least gave me piece of mind.  The shop itself should close for good.  It's not fair for anyone to work with that atmosphere hanging over their head.

Clydebank, a WH manager and cashier who were attacked (and manager stabbed with scissors) in the Dalkeith branch last year were assaulted AFTER the culprit trashed the FOBT which had took his money, and who then smashed his way into the office with a stool from the shop floor. Sometimes bandit screens are useless.

My understanding is he was having a cigarette outside the shop and was attacked by a psycho with a hammer walking past.  He wasn't found until one and half hours later when the cashier reported for work.

Police arrest man over Andrew Iacovou murder

By GRAHAM GREEN  4:23PM 30 MAY 2013
racingpost.com

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of Ladrokes betting shop manager Andrew Iacovou arrested a 21-year-old man in east London on Thursday morning.

He was taken to a south London police station, where he will remain in custody while inquiries continue.

Father-of-three Iacovou, 55, who had worked for Ladbrokes for more than 20 years, was bludgeoned to death at around 8.30am last Saturday when alone at his shop in Aberconway Road, Morden, in what is believed to have been a botched robbery attempt.

A Justgiving page set up for the benefit of his wife and children has already raised more than £16,000. To donate to the fund visit justgiving.com/AndrewIacovou.

The shop, which stands next door to Morden neighbourhood police office that was unmanned at the time of the murder, remains closed. Ladbrokes spokesman Ciaran O'Brien said there were no immediate plans to re-open the shop.
