When approaching investors prior to filming, Six did not mention the mouth-to-anus aspect of the plot, fearing it would put off potential backers

- good idea!

A French film called "Martyrs" is probably the most disturbing film I've ever seen.

Honourable mentions to The Shining and Audition

numerone, wasn't that an episode of South Park? I remember one with Steve Jobs that had a very similar idea.

1. Seed.

It's not a particularly well made film but the footage of real animals being tortured is very unpleasant.
There's also a five minute sequence of a woman being hit with a hammer.

The director clearly just wanted to offend as many people as possible and to a certain extent succeeded.
Hopefully he gets hit by a car or something in karmic retribution.

2. Spit on your grave (the remake)

The only remake of one of these kinds of films that went further than the original.
It possibly works because its sleek modern look makes the viewer expect another watered down remake.
Virtually no plot, just an excuse for an extended sequence of some genuinely nightmarish images.

3. Repulsion (polanski)

Unlike Seed and I Spit, this is actually a good film.
The best thing Deneuve ever did and the claustrophobic atmosphere is conveyed superbly.

In fact Polanski's combined Horror portfolio has more going for it than the entire 'torture porn' scene.

I can't think of anything that has horrified me as I've got older.
When I was a kid I was allowed to watch The Thing (Kurt Russell one), around the age of 7/8, although when I saw watch I probably mean hide my face behind the cushions.

BTW Oldboy is a great great film, slightly gruesome but the film is brilliant so the small bit of gruesomeness is just a part of the plot.

It#s being remade by Hollwood next year, they will ruin it.

Johnny Got His Gun (1971)

Watched it as a kid... Disturbed me then.

Synopsis

Joe Bonham (Bottoms), a young American soldier hit by an artillery shell during World War I, lies in a hospital bed. He is a quadruple amputee who has also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to reason, however, rendering him a prisoner in his own body. As he drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend (Kathy Fields). He also forms a bond, of sorts, with a young nurse (Diane Varsi) who senses his plight.

At the end of the film, Joe tries to communicate to his doctors, via Morse code, and wishes for the Army to either put him in a glass coffin in a freak show as a demonstration of the horrors of war, or kill him. In the end, however, he realizes that the Army will grant neither wish, and will leave him in a state of living death.

In the film's climax, his nurse attempts to euthanize him by clamping his breathing tube, but her supervisor stops her before Joe can succumb. This does not occur in the novel. The film ends with Joe weakly chanting "S.O.S. Help me."

May have missed it, but haven't seen the Spanish Telephone Box short film mentioned.
Can't remember it's name?

Had it downloaded on some HDD for a few years but can't bring myself to watch it, after seeing it as a youngster.

I've got a film that knocks the living crap out of all these, mainly because it was made to be shown to kids. Was shown it by a teacher it when I was seven, repressed memory came back about five years ago and thanks to the internet, I was able to check my mind wasn't playing tricks. It really was the most messed up thing imaginable. I'm sure some of you will remember it, even if you don't want to. It's about the dangers of playing around train lines. Now...my village didn't even have a railway. To be in danger I would, ironically, have had to take a six mile bus journey.

I've just found the first five minutes on youtube. As I recall it got a lot worse after this...and wikipedia would back me up on this, but it's still pretty crazy.

I present for you...the Trainline.

Oh, also 'Happiness'. "Hey it's got a soundtrack by REM, this will probably be clever and cool."

Sparkmaster, A lot of  those  Warnings To Kids Films are disturbing . The plot of that one is ludicrous; the school having kids racing across a railway line!

They didn't fk about in the 70s with worries about scaring kids

This is the most infamous one, which you have probably repressed

Le Scaphandre Et Le Papillon may disturb some people. The fictionalised account of Jean Dominique Bauby a french journalist who suffered from Locked-In Syndrome.
In English it is called, incorrectly,The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
It is a magnificent film.

The one where Samantha Morton wears her dead mum's coat and gets slashed on is pretty grim.
As for kids ones, this Mark Twain clip takes some beating...

Un scaphandre is a diving suit, the one that comes with metal helmet, and a great big hosepipe .The giant octupus is an optional extra.
A diving bell is une cloche a plongeur,or just une cloche if it is in context.
Or ,even,a diving bell or pressurized capsule used by astronauts for example but if you watch the film it is clear that it is a diving suit or an isolation suit.
It is not a moment I need it is a winner.Laugh

Laugh Ahh... wrongly called, rather than wrongly translated ?

We had one of those wandering around here recently,  Willard Price's 'Volcano Adventure' kids book had a great chapter about one of those (sealed) going down a volcano.

No it is the wrong translation. It is not uncommon.I watched ,briefly,a film starring Barbara Stanwyck and Ronald Regan. She said to him "You were born ornery."
The subtitle transated it as "You are a born flatterer."Laugh
The film about Bauby is really good if you enjoy a decent film.It is nowhere near as depressing as it sounds.

CHECK THIS OUT!

When I was 12, I went to the cinema to see some ordinary movie, don't remember what, but they showed this short film before. Can't believe they showed this when kids were in the cinema, but that's how they rolled back in the day. Scared

The only other film i saw as a child that freaked me out as much was Don't look now.

Don't read the description or comments, just watch the film. Only just found it reading this thread, because talk of 70s tv shorts reminded me. 33 years later still makes me shiver.

wouldn't say it was disturbing but extremely violent, DRIVE.

it's a well made film and the first half is very good and very stylish,
then it's suddenly like they changed director and  Quentin Tarantino takes over...
and it does get very violent.

I don't like films which show violence just for the sake of violence,
this would  have been a really good film without the sudden intense graphic violence.
