akabula you demonstrated what you know about music previously.
You said you never heard of Damien Dempsey, but you were a huge fan of The Dubliners.....
Damien Dempsey had been playing with them for years sunshine.
Go have a read of Damien's Wikipaedia page, you might learn something about his talents.
You were saying before you didn't rate Damien's work either....
Another great piece of judgement from you...go read about all the singer/songwriters that rave about Damien's work.
It's also laughable that you don't rate Morrissey as a songwriter which is the title of this thread. The bloke is widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of our generation.
And that average Irish singer you talked about, shows how much you pay attention...he is a singer/songwriter, writes all his own songs.
David Keenan his name is and he's just turned 22. He will be embarking on a tour in November with Damien Dempsey...and he has yet to release his debut album. But I have seen him live many times, and I can tell you he is one of Ireland's greatest singer/songwriters of all-time.
His song "The Friary" is a classic by the way, as is "Matchbox", "Ramblin" and "El Paso"...
And when I talk about music you should do yourself a favour and listen...

Yes I did say I was a big fan of the Dubs but only up and until Ronnie bowed out.
neither Paddy nor Patsy could fill his shoes and they were never the same.
The last time I viewed them, and it was online, Patsy a d Gerry O'Connor were in the line up and they were accompanying Imelda May.
As regards DD he may have joined them onstage but he was ever a member.
BTW I never attacked his writing skills merely his singing style which I don't like.
As regards DK I find him totally boring.
As regards your last remark well that's just laughable. If you like it then so should everybody is what I took out of that.

That's just the well know one, Modern Life Is Rubbish from 1993 is a masterpiece and still going strong, great Blur album this year and Gorillaz early next year which he makes...two multi millon selling bands on the go.

Complete waste of time these threads as everyone posts their fav artists. I'm going to do the exact same and mention Freddie for Bohemian Rapsody.
Most posters on here didn't rate it so it falls on deaf ears.Still a masterpiece though.

Everyone thus far to post hates Noel Gallagher but the sales of albums, singles and concert tickets will paint a completely different picture. Everyone can have their opinion but surely even if you hate him and his music, people must realise that he just isn't for them but the mass do think he is a good songwriter.

On a personal level I think Morrissey was absolutely Pony. I think Albarn is a very clever guy and he has created many well written songs, on several different levels. I never give it a great deal of time and thought for who writes the songs just what I enjoy tapping my foot to

And who's Gallagher's hero??? F*cking Morrissey.......in awe of being allowed into his circle for a pint he was.....

Sales of albums & singles mean jacks*it to the music boffins....you'll be telling us Ed Sheeran has sold a lot of singles next.......

As the man below said these are pointless threads because everyone has their favourites, but one thing that will help you appreciate singer/songwriting a bit more is to have wriiten your own songs for many years from scratch on a guitar, piano whatever.....and compare them to other songs....a good exercise would be to write down the lyrics of other songs and analyse them.....

And Noel Gallagher would laugh if somebody told him he was a better singer/songwriter than Morrissey..

so are you saying ed sheeran is a poor songwriter because you don't like his songs? because again the people of today buy his signles, concert tickets like they are going out of fashion and that is simply because the love the music he writes (whether I agree or disagree is irrelevant)

and again... Morrisseys Lyrics are bang average IMO.... its a game of opinions

This is balls.

Noel Gallagher has done a (IMO superior than the original) cover of 'There Is A  Light.....' but Lennon and McCartney and Paul Weller are greater influences and 'heroes', acknowledged sundry times by the man himself

Its not a question of opinions. A  work of art is great and is independent of taste and an individuals ability to recognize that greatness. If someone doesn't recognize that The Smiths and Morrissey produced great music then the fault is with them and not the music...
the lines "two lovers entwined pass me by, and heaven knows I`m miserable now" are enough if you understand.

Noel Gallagher on Morrissey "The most literate man to ever write music".....it's all there on Youtube under "Noel Gallagher on The Smiths" for the butlers of the world....

Have you seen these Ed Sheeran fans? Kiddies with their f******* parents......and which artist said in an interview "kids don't know s**t from clay"....yes....NOEL GALLAGHER...Laugh

I enjoyed the banter lads but I must get back to work so I'll leave you with a verse from one of the greats:

"Well I'm leaving, I must be going. I'm flying, I'm flowing to a land beyond these laws.
Make my way up a slip road, the trees lose their leaves, they are weeping for my cause.
Yes, from town to town, my feet will scrape the ground, I'm gonna sample all your wares.
Coast to coast, as the cities boast, I'll trade my stories with your stares."
