He has written some classics but will they stand the test of time? how long is the test of time ? anyway for what its worth here are my top 3 writers Bernie Taupin Lennon McCartney (counting this as one) Elvis Costello Not sure how long the test of time is , but Stone Roses songs still sound up to date and ahead of the p1sh today lol Noels Oasis songs will last but his NGHFB will be forgotten bar a few Oasis actually have a lot betetr songs than the ones they actually released on singles b sides and unreleased are class , if interested ill show ya links |

I made a quick but big list THEN went through and crossed out all those that had been mentioned - Crossing out Tom Waits and Richard Thompson was particularly hard
. Here is who was left...Chuck Berry Smokey Robinson Robert Johnson Woodie Guthrie Willie Dixon Buddy Holly Jim Webb Nick Drake and finally and by no means least, the best imo that most people have never heard of - Ellie Greenwich (and Jeff Barry) |

Your view may be a product of your relative youth. Time is a great determinant of greatness |

How can anyone not admire this:
===================================== I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour But heaven knows I'm miserable now I was looking for a job, and then I found a job And heaven knows I'm miserable now In my life Why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die? Two lovers entwined pass me by And heaven knows I'm miserable now I was looking for a job, and then I found a job And heaven knows I'm miserable now In my life Oh, why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die? What she asked of me at the end of the day Caligula would have blushed "Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said And I naturally fled In my life Why do I smile At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye? I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour But heaven knows I'm miserable now "Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said And I naturally fled In my life Oh, why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die? Songwriters MORRISSEY, STEVEN PATRICK/MARR, JOHNNY |

Is the answer 'Someone who doesn't like a load of wimpy, half-ar$ed, whiny, navel-gazing, 'ah! poor sensitive me' load of fking boring old w@nk'? |

Great song writer although without jonny marr with those great melodies and riffs wouldn't have existed the siongs were unique but the sound was new and fresh provided by marr at the time...

30 Oct 15 17:35 Roger it's all tongue in cheek comedy.... Which is why it's w@nk It’s a problem the English have. The English are terrified of naked emotion. “They find naked emotion embarrassing so they like their art covered with knowingness, irony, camp humour - anything but doing it like you actually mean it....until it hurts, like it takes to make art that's in any way compelling. But no, just smother it in sequins and introversion and watch the fey, angsty posers come running. |

How dare you describe me roger. Consider yourself BUTLERED!!!
but.... Pavarotti and Nessan Dorma is the tear jerker for me. Some of his old recordings - he holds the notes so well. Some don't get opera then one day - bang it hits you. You have to have a heart of stone not to be affected by La Boheme - try the O soave fanciulla duet!!! Some pop, rock (deep purple) etc etc is rather good, but they are up against soloists, a chorus and orchestra in a performance. But then so have deep purple done this!! and a few others.(with orchestra) Queen another good outfit. and of course mcartney/lennon Geshwyn natuarally Gorecki a more modern 'song writer' brilliant. Derek Doyle (derek who!!??) more a composer than a song writer as such. Check out what he is behind musically I have drifted and realise this is more about modern pop/ rock etc than other genres although it shouldn't be. |

So you never went desperately looking for work Roger, and after you got the job were depressed?
It's something everybody has felt before but nobody has ever said quite as well as the man. |
|
By:
Doesn't sound like tongue in cheek comedy much.
Sounds like a boring self-obsessed little twerp that needs some fresh air, Vitamin C and press ups! |

Well done to roger for over analyzing things and coming up with a load of bollox

So you never went desperately looking for work Roger, and after you got the job were depressed? It's something everybody has felt before but nobody has ever said quite as well as the man. Easily pleased sprigs to mind. and weren't you promoting some average irish singer recently? |
|
By:
aka, that's the great thing about music, if we all liked the same stuff writers would probably be redundant???.
|
|
By:
I was just replying in kind to RdeBris earlier catty comment.
Doesn't help that I don't like Morrissey. Always found him too full of himself. I prefer a grittier type singer like yer man Finbar. Different genre but still different class. |
