i have seen the stones,deep purple,ac/dc.dylan.def leppard.iron maiden.quo.stiff little fingers.generation x(worst concert ever).rory gallaher(possibly best)dr feelgood.eagles.thin lizzy.dylan.the skids.big country.olivia newton john,the undertones,sex pistols.iron maiden.eurythmics.steve forbett.blues traveller.sham 69.proclaimers.uriah heep.toto.boston.u2.simpleminds.tom petty.horslips and a lot more i cant think of any band i would go and see live now.

I'm 51 years old and been listening to music since the early 70's. Obviously i'm aware of music earlier than that too.
I have to say that the best of today's music is certainly comparable with the better earlier stuff. The trouble is all the people i pay to see and listen to the music of these days are NEVER on TV or radio! |

The biggest downside of music today is that appearance is far, far more important now, in terms of getting a recording contract, which is a bit ridiculous for an aural art form.
More positively, such a contract is no longer necessary for someone to get their music heard by lots of people. Publishing, and recording being so much cheaper means there are vastly more artists out there. Take any chart from the 60s and as well as one or two immortal classics (which of cours are the ones we remember), there is also a tremendous amount of cheesey nonsense and novelty records. |

But there were some marvellous novelty records.
Charlie Drake, Benny Hill, Peter Sellers to name but a few. And there couldn't have been any as cheesey as Leona Lewis, innit! |

My wife and I used to spend Sunday evenings listening to Mike Sweeney on Capital Gold Radio. 2 hours of 60s music followed by 2 hours of 50s. Superb. |

60s music like that of the 50s 70s 80s 90s was progressive, but todays music seems to be stuck in a rut. But that’s just the opinion of 47 year old what would I know about the youth of today.

90% of the music I own or play is from the 60s and early 70s.
I also have a fair bit of classical stuff which is better than any hip hop rubbish etc. |

the boring answer is there is good and bad in every era .
i listen to a lot of 60s and listen to a fair bit from this last decade and would prefer 60s music if pushed into a corner , it's interesting that most of the bands i see live who do covers tend to raid the 60s and 70s cookies jar as well as a lot of stuff from recently . most 60s i see played tends to be from the Stones and the Who |

60s music was on a different level to anything before or since.
I'd rate them 60s, then 70s, then 80s, then 50s, but 90s, noughties, and 10 are hard to split - they all sound equally sh1te. Overproduced, bland, corporate sh1te. We live in the era of the cover version and sample/mix/mashup - that says it all. |

I'd go 60s, 70s, 50s, 80s.
90s was ok in parts, Nirvana especially good. A good few cover versions in the 60s, some of which I'm still learning about. The Bachelors were rogues at it. |

80s for me was total dross with the 90s and 00s not much better.
10s okayish with the 70s good but the 60s by a country mile the best decade. Obviously some exceptions to the rule. |

There is simply no match -- not before nor since -- for the music of the 60's, but there were some crappy songs as well it wasn't all brilliant. I think that era - late 50's and the 60's defined rock music. But still some very good music today, although 60's for me.
