maleuk01., the problem with using the apparently infinitesimally small chance of our own existence to support the alleged existence of something called "God" (ie it was so unlikely it must have been designed/guided, etc) is that if it had happened any other way, and we hadn't been created, then we wouldn't be here to ask the question. But just because we are evidently here doesn't mean we had to exist and were part of some grand plan. Indeed, consider the infinite other possibilities which will not have happened as the "opportunity cost" of the route along which the Universe has evolved. This is a ridiculous argument. I bet the fish I feed think this. I can imagine the theist fish saying who keeps the water at the right temp and keeps putting food at the top and the tank and the atheist fish saying don't ask stupid questions we wouldn't be here to ask the question. I bet the atheist fish thinks nothing exists out side the tank as well because of his paucity of thinking and he hasn't ever experienced anything else. |

what im saying slarty is that mathmatics suggest there is a creator due to the complexites of the universe even down to how complex dna is, and the instructions it carries out. For anyone to say God doesnt exist 100% is nothing more than an idiot Valid. 1 Fact they can't create life in a laboratory, but we are supposed to believe that life just happened by chance and that some how the random elements miraculously came together on their own. 2 Fact. atheists believe that the big bang just happened by chance. That all the order and laws of physics came from a random explosion. that everything came out of nothing on its own. That the universe created itself even when it didn't exist. I'm sorry , but if believe that twaddle you have more faith than me or any christian. |

Further, when we consider the great reformers that have helped to bring about those changes that we take to constitute moral progress, e.g. the abolition of slavery, or granting the working classes and women the right to vote, we generally think these reformers are moral exemplars. According to cultural relativism, though, these great reformers were bad people; they acted in opposition to the values of their particular cultural contexts.
Moral relativism, because of its liberal implications for ethics, is a matter of great importance; what we think about moral relativism matters. This is one of those cases where philosophy has a practical impact on society as a whole. It is important that the theory, and its consequences, become more widely understood. |

I had some Jehovah's Witnesses knock at my door last year, 2 old women. Normally I don't answer the door but on this day I did, by mistake. Problem with me is Im too polite to be honest. However I thought I will give them their chance to say what they want to say, first thing out of their mouths was "Do you believe in God and how do you think the world is going" So politely enough I said "No to be honest" in regards to believing in God, you should have seen their faces, to say they looked shocked would be a understatment. Once they got over the shock of me not believing, they asked why is that to which I replied " Well It's just all the the bad things going on in the world, what type of god would let many starve and get all these disease and let them have their limbs blown of in the thousands in Iraq/ Afghanistan etc ?" Their faces were a picture to behold and they could not answer me, they then said while I was correct, he is looking over me etc etc and tried to spin it onto something else. They gave me some leaflets and said they would knock back and were on their way. A polite/quiet meeting. But I hope I opend THEIR eyes maybe with my views as opposed to them opening MY eyes. Hopefully you will read this thread and have your eyes opened. You think they have never heard any one say they don't believe in God? Pull the other one it's got bells on it. As for the starvation and Iraq and such like. I think you will find it is mans fault not Gods. There is enough food in the world. It's the greedy west that won't share it.Do you know how much we throw away each year? You have this back to front my friend. |

Anybody who can prove god exists or know he exists for a fact is most welcome! Anybody who can do the above and explain why THEIR god exists and no other is even more welcome! I don't know that anyone can prove God. thats not to say there isn't evidence for God. You can't prove God doesn't exist because you can't prove a negative. |

that is why i choose to believe in nothing that is not proved

(1) Personal experince (2) The behavior basis of the early followers choosing to be martyed after claiming to have seen Jesus after his crucifiction Exactly people don't die for a lie. If they didn't see him alive they would have just said no we lied Jesu didn't come back to life don't kill us. We never saw him alive. Also the Church would have never got started in Jerusalem. When they were preaching some one could just go and get Jesus body and say look here he is he's dead your lying. |

I think there is a possibility that some sort of creator set off the start of the universe billions of years ago. Who/how/why that came about, no one has even come close to answering so I certainly wouldn't waste any time worshipping a theoretical creator (I'm sure he'd understand). What I don't believe in is a god that specifically created Man and takes an active interest in our lives, answering our prayers etc. There are plenty of people who would disagree with you.People who have had prayers answered. How do you explain the miracles at Lourdes for instance? Why would he allow so much suffering in the world? Very often this is when people start to have faith. It means he is either unwilling or unable to prevent it, which makes him a pretty lousy god imo. This is a false dichotomy. he does prevent it some times. The bible was written when Science was virtually non-existent, for example they were able to claim the world was only a few thousand years old, the bible never says this. which we now know to be total nonsense (embarrassingly some hardline Christians including Sarah Palin, still believe this to be true!). I'm not going to defend Sarah Palin. Can't be done. Sadly I don't see the situation changing soon and Atheists/Agnostics will continue to be in the world minority as mankind throughout the years has always shown a yearning for some sort of higher meaning, and if we don't know what it is then it seems like we'll just make something Not just a higher meaning, but meaning in general. Atheist/agnostics have no answers . Only a empty irrational belief. |

There are no true atheists on this thread. A true atheist treats the idea that a god exists as likely that cheese spread could power a rocket.
Totally out of the question. Who debates whether cheese spread powers a rocket? You get the metaphor I hope. |
