===========================

To any beginners, Spotify is the latest internet music-listening experience.

The main points are:

- It's totally legal, legitimate, safe and free
- There is a staggering choice of music, played at good quality
- You will need to download the Player with an free account (quick, simple and only once)
- It's best described as an internet pub jukebox
- It is very simple to use, yet beautifully designed
- You can create your own Playlists and if you like a song, save it to that Playlist
- It is interactive, so it can be shared around

==========================

It's all free and legal. The record companies have allowed Spotify to play their songs.
The artists get paid, but like a radio, you listen, but you don't pay

The choice of songs is in the millions, from yesteryear to today
All tracks or whole albums - you choose
The only drawback is one or two mega-artists have still to sign up (Beatles, Floyd etc.)
Songs are complete and in good quality

You can download the Player from here:
https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/
create an free (NOT Premium) account first (around half a dozen standard things to fill in)
and then download - Pin Spotify to your Start Menu or Desktop page

Internet pub jukebox - this is where the record companies feel safe.
You choose the song, listen to it and that's it.
You can't download it, burn it, put it on another device or play it elsewhere.
You can however, save the song to your Spotify favourites, where it will remain forever.

Simple to use. One searchbox, one results box and one basic Play area:
http://www.kjell.fi/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/spotify.png
but a nice, sleek design

Create your own Playlists - Click '+ New Playlist' on the left and name it
(as a beginner I created 5 at first '1960s', '1970s', '1980s', 1990's and '2000s'
and saved songs by date at first - once you get familiar you can change and re-arrange)

Interactive - You can copy the URL of one of your playlists and share it by e-mail etc.
The recipient clicks and you can listen immediately to those songs.

My top 3 has been unaltered for the last 10 years until I recently bought the new CD by Jem,her second album and discovered a stunning song which I would recommend to anyone on here. So my revised top 3 is:
1. Endless Dream - Yes (1994)
2. Supper's Ready - Genesis (1972)
3. You Will Make It - Jem (2009)

Poppydog. 06 Apr 20:44
Wow, Dark Destroyer, a fellow Kate & Anna fan - I doubt there's many of us on here
----------------------------------------
Sevenone,
I will add a beginner's guide (believe me it is very simple),
when I put up the main thread. There's enough here to be making a start.
Thanks guys

Dark Destroyer 06 Apr 21:06
It could easily have been an all "Kate & Anna" top 3.
Heart like a Wheel and My Town were right up there as well.

Coachbuster 06 Apr 21:14
Agree with Canary ,it would be impossible to name a top 3 really .
Hard enough picking 3 from a year, genre, even band sometimes .
I did a top 100 one time, but even that changed month to month.

morpteh mackem 06 Apr 21:17
1 wichita lineman
2 streets of your town- go-betweens
3 there is a light - smiths

anubis7 06 Apr 21:23
Coachbuster,I did a top 100 in 1985. I update it every few years to bring in new songs and change the order. It has made selecting songs for your top 3 for each year threads quite easy as I can just take the highest placed songs for each year.

Coachbuster 06 Apr 21:37
Anubis ..... exact same thing here .
At the end of every year until around 2002 ,i used to set myself up with beer ,snacks and a comfy chair and do my top 100 rundown, playing each record in turn down to the #1 chart position.
5- 6 very well spent hours .I stopped short of playing jingles pre recorded from the top 40 though

anubis7 06 Apr 21:42
I did mine 10 songs per night over 10 nights. I like long epics so it would take me a lot more than 6 hours to play mine. My top 3 mentioned above would take 45 minutes to play back to back.

dan hardcore 06 Apr 21:42
1. stevie - royal trux
2. don't stop me now - queen
3. peoria lunch box blues - magnolia electric company

Coachbuster 06 Apr 21:44
Could have been longer than 6 looking back
10 each night is more sensible imo

The Priest 06 Apr 21:48
Go for it Poppy
1) Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing Reprise - Bowie (Diamond Dogs)
2) California Dreaming - Mamas and the Papas
3) Arriving Somewhere But Not Here - Porcupine Tree (Deadwing)

I've only uploaded those that have all 3 tracks available
Will get back to those who have missed

(Legal reasons or much too obscure the main reasons for the other 20%)

Coachbuster 07 Apr 19:00
Just had a browse through the music archives ,and i think there are 50 i would offer top marks for .... still couldnt order them precisely ,Poppy.

man of many moods 07 Apr 19:09
same problem.
how about we just pick 3 songs that we like instead?

Slippy Blue 07 Apr 19:11
It´s No Good - Depeche Mode
Rent - Carter USM
Running To Stand Still - U2

Poppydog. 07 Apr 19:27
I know it's hard (no impossible)
But there's 3 Chit-Chat Mix Playlists
and 3 songs from each Chit-Chatter is creating a decent sized,
but not unmanageable and off-putting selection

Go to spotify.com, download some doodad thingumy then paste that ^ address into a browser, click "play now", it'll ask if it can run a a program on your computer, you say yes, click yes, maybe flick the bean, then enjoy the tunes imo.

Poppydog. 07 Apr 11:54
There's no ingenious crafting to the running order of the Playlists
It's purely down to the random order Chit-Chatters posted on the other thread.
(It's a pity quite a few of their choices aren't available yet)
By:
Poppydog.
When: 08 Apr 09 13:55
Sevenone,
Did you get it working. It may be worth trying again if you've restarted your PC

It seems, after some research, it's not a Spotify problem, but how your PC is set up.
(something to do with your browser or your firewall/anti-virus)

It's a pity Londis isn't around, as he knows Spotify and PCs better than me probably?
