I went to the doctor, he said ' Have you had your eyes checked?'

I said 'No, they've alway been brown.'

The symptoms of swine flu are broadly the same as those of ordinary flu, but may be more severe and cause more serious complications.

The typical symptoms are:

* sudden fever, and
* sudden cough.

Other symptoms may include:

* headache,
* tiredness,
* chills,
* aching muscles,
* limb or joint pain,
* diarrhoea or stomach upset,
* sore throat,
* runny nose,
* sneezing, and
* loss of appetite.

Most people who have contracted swine flu recover within a week and do not suffer complications, even without being given antiviral medication.

However, experts point out that as this is a new virus, its behaviour cannot be predicted with certainty.

Swine flu is different from seasonal flu in that most serious illnesses have been in younger age groups, as happened in all three 20th-century influenza pandemics.

A doctor faced with a symptomatic patient cannot yet predict with certainty the course of their illness and whether or not they will be in the small proportion who may become more seriously ill.

This is why antiviral medication is still being given to all those with swine flu in the UK, subject to their doctors discretion.
High-risk groups

Some groups of people are more at risk of serious illness if they catch swine flu, and will need to start taking antiviral medication as soon as they are confirmed with the illness.

Scientists are still learning more about the risk profile of the virus, but it is already known that the following people are particularly susceptible:

* people with:
- chronic lung disease,
- chronic heart disease,
- chronic kidney disease,
- chronic liver disease,
- chronic neurological disease (such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease),
- immunosuppression (whether caused by
disease or treatment) and
- diabetes mellitus,
* patients who have had drug treatment for
asthma within the past three years,
* pregnant women,
* people aged 65 years and older, and
* young children under five years old.

It is vital that people in these higher-risk groups who catch swine flu get antivirals and start taking them as soon as possible.

There is a lot of symptom crossover so covering with antibiotcs is often a very reasonable thing to do.

Antibiotics are useless against a virus, and used unnecessarily only enhance the possibility of bacterial resistance.

THE AT RISK GROUPS
People with lung disease
People with heart disease
People with kidney disease
People with diabetes
Those with immunosuppression problems either because of treatment or disease
Patients who have had drug treatment for asthma
Pregnant women
Children under five

As much as we try to combat it, Darwinism triumphs in the end

This new strain appeared to be closely related to the strain involved in the 1918 flu pandemic. Moreover, the ensuing increased surveillance uncovered another strain in circulation in the U.S.: A/Victoria/75 (H3N2) spread simultaneously, also caused illness, and persisted until March.[29] Alarmed public-health officials decided action must be taken to head off another major pandemic, and urged President Gerald Ford that every person in the U.S. be vaccinated for the disease.[30

I watched a programme recently where they dug up bodies of some person/people who died in thw 1918 Pandemic :(

You don't think this could be related in anyway do you? could the diesease have been hibernating all thes years in human hair or something similar?

So we are now being told that if you develop symptons whilst on holiday abroad you are to stay there and not travel home before you are cleared.

Well it's a little bit late for all that now imo, I said at the start travel especially in and out of Mexico should of been stopped.

But oh no it takes a pandemic to get them to sit up and take action, absolute balls up.

erm... is the death rate any higher than normal flu yet?

What is your specialist training by the way, Cath?

sibaroni dear dear dear, long time no see.

Well my little Italian sounding sausage friend, not yet BUT it's the potential mutaution risk that is growing by the day that is the worry.

I.E Thats why they wanbt to stop people travelling to and from abroad if they are unwell, you be carrying a form of bird flu join that with swine-flu.

but surely there have been predicted pandemics before (Avian Flu and SARS, off the top of my head)

I'm not an expert in this field, I doubt anyone on this forum is

But neither of these two, or any others, have resulted in a pandemic before.

Closing off an entire country, especially one with such large land borders (where there already is a large amount of illegal migration) would be a huge job, not least in financial terms.

And as has just been pointed out, is there any proof that death rates are higher than 'normal' flu?

I see, potential to mutate. And pray, why should swine flu mutation be any more likley than any other flu?

As a matter of interest, where is that advice?

sibaroni this has been covered previously in here, you cannot class this swine-flu as normal flu, sorry you just can't.

It's not often you have a death from a healthy person thats had normal seasonal flu, usually it's the sick and elderly.

Swine-Flu seems to be attack the chest walls and lungs alot more aggressively than normal season flu would.

Of the highest dangers look to be pregnant women, and now even The National Childbirth Trust advise to delay any plans to have babies if at all possible.

So Gents, I'd advics your lady friend to be on the pill and also for safety measure you could dunky yourself up also.

This has been covered

Er, no it hasn't. You keep saying, "but it might". And we all say "yes, like any flu". And then you say, "but this one is different", and we say "what makes it more likley to mutate". And round and round it goes, until sparks or somebody asks for a source to back up your assertions, and then you get very stroppy and stamp your feet.

When you have some evidence come back to us. But until then dear heart...
