"Once or IF this turns to a Pandemic it will still take around 6 MONTHS for medicine to be produced that will fight swine-flu"

What medicine is this please?

It will be a vaccine BUT the virus could change this is the battle they face.

The two Scots who have confirmed cases, 7 of there friends also now have symptons and now another two of the family/friends also have symptons so thats 9 of the couples friends so far that have symptons. Test results won't be known till tomorrow at the earliest.

there is no vaccine against this.

Not yet but they are working to provide one but that won't be available for 6 months atleast. But in this time the strain could change.

we don't need a vaccine. this is a slightly more virulent version of flu. It is obviouly highly contageous but not particularly virulent. To become a pandemic the virus will have to mutate in to something more virulent and the signs are that it is becoming lesvirulent as few people are dying that was initially the case ( as a %)

how can they be so exact to say 6 months. they don't even know if it can be inoculated.

* fewer people are dying than was initially the case.

Rustyboy, this is just a new type of flu. The technology exists. What they have to do is develop a way to present the flu to the body in a weakened form. It isn't that difficult according to my girlfriend (an immunologist).

Do you understand that in the time this story has been about many times the death toll have died from other flu's across the world?
By:

When: 28 Apr 09 14:24
Not in Mexico City. they're not. Seems to be a different, more lethal strain, there.

Anyone find a link to see exactly where all the deaths in Mexico have been? I'm assumming most have been in the capital.
By:

When: 28 Apr 09 14:24
It could be also that in the areas where the Mexicans have died maybe the healthcare there is not as good, Mexico has some lovely parts to it but also some very grubby parts too. Hygiene not always at it's highest either.

Would you say there has been a plethora of cases in Mexico?
By:
evski
When: 28 Apr 09 14:28
it is exactly the same strian, wur. It is just that the mexicans have a vastly inferior medical system. Unless this strain evolves in to something nastier the worst we can expect is a few old people dying and plenty of young healthy people having a few days off work. Tamiflu will be sufficient to treat this, and once one has had it, one can't contract it again.
By:

When: 28 Apr 09 14:40
according to that map 33 people have died from the flu, not 150+

More people around the world have died from falling down the stairs in the last 24 hours.

This really is getting silly now.

Anyone seen the front of the Mirror today?

The picture of the laughing pig made me giggle a bit.
Right in your face, they're laughing at the pantwetters that dance on the end of their strings.

vaccine is irrelevant. It won't**anyone who already has the flu. Vaccines are only really useful before an outbreak, although they can be used for stopping it spreading into communities which are still infection-free.

What makes you think antivirals such as Tamiflu won't work, Cath?
By:
Cath22
When: 28 Apr 09 14:58
Well they have said it won't work to kill the flu, I presume they have been testing this at the labs. All that it will do is maybe lessen the strain of it. This is why they are looking into making a vaccine but like I said before the problem they have is the strain can change.

When you get the first part of the flu it may not be the same in a motnhs time, it may get worse it may get better. The only thing we do have on our time is we are entering summertime so the air will be warmer and may kill it off fully or partly.

The swine-flu could be gone in a couple of months or be with us on and off for the next couple of years. We may have less cases in the summer but by winter it could bite back again.

I think you're either misunderstanding what they said or misquoting. You're the one asserting the WHO have said something. I don't believe they said what you're saying. Therefore it's for you to provide evidence to support your statement.

The UK Government already has a stockpile of Tamiflu, ordered as a precaution against a pandemic.

It is unclear how effective currently available flu vaccines would be at offering protection against the new strain, as it is genetically distinct from other flu strains.

US scientists are already developing a bespoke new vaccine, but it may take some time to perfect it, and manufacture enough supplies to meet what could be huge demand.

A vaccine was used to protect humans from a version of swine flu in the US in 1976.

However, it caused serious side effects, including an estimated 500 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome. There were more deaths from the vaccine than the outbreak.

That doesn't mean it would be ineffective, does it?
