Sabre,
I said 'hello' on the quiz, but after you had gone.
Thought this was worth putting to the top again, for all fellow pugilist fans.

How you doing Tommy.Got the builders round and i'm helping with the labouring, had a break so i tried {and failed the quiz] Hope all is well. This might not be a popular choice-Barrera v Khan. I always thought the Yemenite was overrated and really enjoyed the way Barrera took him apart, made a few quid aswell, which was nice!

Just thought of a fight, after reading a passage by Campo on the '...Docs' thread.
As I say, I have too many to choose one, but quite recenly they showed on the 'Classic Fights' show on TV; Frazier V Bonavena. The commentator said Bonavena in a previous fight, was the first to put Joe on his back in his pro. career. It was a really tough fight, Joe won on points, (I think).

Oscar "Ringo" Bonavena
Bonavena earned the nickname "Ringo" for the Beatles haircut that he sported.
Born: Sep. 25, 1942
Died: May. 22, 1976

World heavyweight boxing's top contender who went 15 rounds with Ali and Frazier.
A vicious puncher ranked at the top of the professional heavyweight boxing division, Bonavena fought 3 famous champions: Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Floyd Patterson. Bonavena knocked down Joe Frazier twice but Frazier won a 10 round decision over Bonavena in New York City on September 1, 1966.
After winning seven consecutive fights Bonavena fought Frazier again, this time for the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship in Philadelphia on December 10, 1968 but Frazier won a 15 round decision. After winning five consecutive fights by knockout, on December 7, 1970 in New York City Bonavena fought 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali. Late in the 15th round Ali knocked down Bonavena 3 times and finally knocked Bonavena out, the only time in 66 fights Bonavena was stopped.
On February 11, 1972 Bonavena fought a brutal war in New York City with former champ Floyd Patterson, Patterson won the ten round decision. Bonavena won his last six bouts, his last victory coming with a ten round decision win over Billy Joiner in Reno Nevada on February 26,1976.
Known as a hard partier and womanizer when he wasn't training, Bonavena was finally stopped for good. Oscar Bonavena was found murdered at the famed brothel "The Mustang Ranch" on May 22, 1976 just outside of Las Vegas. Final professional boxing record:
56 wins... 9 losses... 1 draw... with 42 kayos.
He was 33 years old when slain.

Alan Appleyard v Simon Cornish. Westfields playing fields. Summer 1991. Sadly no result due to an intervention by Mr Hutton the PE teacher.

Rematch on the green ended with Alan's schoolbag being thrown in the pond. :)

You are brilliant mate. Thanks for that, on Pumpy's behalf.
Also, great piece on Bonavena.
They showed the Ali one too, a few weeks ago. Bonavena was a really hard fighter.
They said he'd been shot when just 33.

The Bonavena fight, once again, illustrates the power that Alis punches had when landed perfectly.

A lot of people said he couldn't punch and relied on speed, but they wouldn't want to get hit by one, even with a safety helmet on.

There is also a slight error in the way the fight is reported.

To be pedantic, under New York Commission rules, Bonavena was technically knocked out immediately after the third knockdown in the 15th.

He wouldn't have taken any more punches after that as the referee would have stopped it.

Froch v Barney about to start on ITV 2

Matthew Barney yesterday had his last sparring session after five weeks of hard training and BritishBoxing.net were invited along to witness it. Put through his paces by trainer George Wadman, a fit looking Barney went six rounds, three against middleweight prospect Anthony Small and three against former WBU middleweight champion Ruben Groenewald.
Barney who has been heavily criticised for his style over the years told me that he is 100% ready for the fight a sentiment shared by his trainer. Everyone who has seen him sparring say that he is in the best shape of his life for his upcoming British and Commonwealth title challenge which takes place next weekend in Nottingham.

Barney of course is a former British title holder, beating Dean Francis over twelve to take the title in March 2003, and is keen to get the belt back off of the unbeaten Carl Froch.

I have won five national titles and this will be the eighth unbeaten boxer I have been in with, because I do not have a promoter to back me, I always fight away' from home. Some of the people who criticise my style should come to watch me rather than just base their opinions on what they read said the confident Barney

Barney is quoted as a 6/1 outsider by the bookmakers a fact that is not missed on Barney, when asked what he thought of the odds Matthew replied I'm going to get rich, my dad offered Mick Hennessy a sidebet but he never came back to us.

Barney is confident he can reclaim the British title and also add the Commonwealth title to his collection, not known for his punching power Barney predicts he will knock out Froch, when asked why he was so confident of this Barney answered.

I don't like him, he has been mouthing off for ages about this fight. I am pleased to be fighting him. He says he has brought me a ticket for row Z, as that is going to be where I end up when he knocks me out, the only way I'll end up there is if he sneezes

Thanks Kq.
At least I had a link.
Tried to lay Froch earlier @1.14
When that went to 1.20, I decided not to do anything.
As I said, I hate betting blind. I'd rather not win, than lose on something I can't make my own judgement on.

Betfair don't think anyone is interested in boxing enough, to have a forum for it.

Bit of sad news here:

Sanchez dies after fighting in bout in Nevada (JULY 7)

On Saturday, Martin The Firefighter Sanchez, 26, from Mexico City, died at Valley Hospital Medical Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada, just hours after being knocked out by Russian boxer, Rustam Nugaev. Sanchez fought on Friday night, and all seemed well until he was walking strangely according to news sources. He was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency brain surgery.
