However, this is a good link for anyone interested: http://www.britishboxing.net/ |

Guys,
I 'saw' Tyson yesterday at Canary Wharf shopping centre during my lunch signing books for Joe Egan?? ex sparring partner. Sad to see how far this man has fallen and sad to see how unhappy and angry he looked yesterday. Still looked exceptionally mean to me though. Apparently he is talking about another comeback. Please Mike, spare us and leave us with the great memories. Best memory of Tyson is the Berbick fight - 91 seconds of animal ferocity and that stumble by Berbick. |
By:
Ken, it's a great shame how Tyson has become the man he is today.
The last news I saw of him on KOTV a few weeks ago, was that he's considering becoming a porn star now. |
By:
TT, it was a shock to see one of my heroes reduced to signing books for a living. Still cannot believe it but do believe that he brought it on himself.
Sad. If only he had some real advisers to help him (Cus etc). |
By:
Yes Ken, I think that's the problem myself.
If Cus hadn't died and he had still kept Teddy Atlas around, we might never have seen the tragedy of the things that have happened since they went. |
By:
TT, how highly do you rate Tyson? I rate him very highly when he was at his peak and put him in the top 5.
By:
Ken, it's so hard to rate fighters from different eras, but when he first came on the scene I watched every single one of his fights that were on terrestrial tv at the time.
I thought him an awesome fighter. He may have proved to be the best ever if Cus and Teddy had been there to steer him. His punching power was undoubtedly magnificent. |
By:
TT, agreed, his uppercuts and head movement were exemplary. Later in his career his head movement was too laboured (due to not training?) and he got hit too easily.
At his peak I think he was a machine and any boxer in history would have had their hands full. Only Marciano, Ali and Foreman from the modern era would have had a chance against a peak Tyson. I purposely miss out Frazier, Holmes, Bowe, Holyfield and Lewis. |
By:
Ken, I agree with you on all points.
He was so explosive when he was at his best, it would have taken someone with supreme tactical skill, like Ali, to have defeated him. |
By:
TT, I agree, Marciano was prob too small and Foreman too wild and not cultured. The greatest of them all would have had his measure IMO.
By:
Jake La motta _ Sugar Ray Robinson , take your pick.
By:
M20, I do not think so. Only one man would have had Tysons measure and he is the greatest man to walk the earth.
By:
Marlboro, brilliant - both of them.
By:
Thanks lads, only know them from Raging Bull :D
By:
I'm with Ken on his thoughts about Ali though.
Jack Johnson was someone that there have only been a few clips shown of on terrestrial tv, but I think in his prime, he might possibly have been the 'greatest'. |
By:
there haven't been any gr8 fights in my lifetime , that i know of.
By:
I must go now lads.
Nice to see you tonight. Goodnight. |
By:
JJ may have been a great fighter but there is only 1 man in the world who would have fought Liston and Foreman at their scary peaks and have had the balls and heart to win. That man is Ali. Every other opponent was beaten before they reached the ring. Ali had balls of steel and a heart and chin of granite.Undisputably Ali is the greatest boxer to walk this earth of any era.

By:
boxing on channel 116 now

KenJ is a shrewd judge.
All fight fans have their favourite fighters. Marlboro, you are probably too young to remember what I term the Golden Era of Ali - Frazier et al You missed some great boxers, some great fighters, and some great fights. It was an era, as a devoted heavyweight fan, I feel fortunate to have lived through. Get to your newsagents and ask for the new Boxing mag and DVD by DeAgostini. Number 3 is out now, and any copy contains a form to send for the back copies. Contains boxers through the ages, fight stats, interviews and of course, fights. |
By:
Number three, AITL?
I'm still awaiting the first! |

I'll post the address later today,Tommy.

Cheers, AITL.
My first copy has already been ordered and paid for. The newsagent said it may be sometime before it was in. I didn't expect to wait this long though! Never mind, Stoke's always a bit behind the rest of the world. |

Boxing on later:
Channel4: 02:50 - KOTV - Boxing Magazine. |
By:
Once again, too late for me Tommy.
By:
I keep saying how ridiculous it is that the programme is on this late, AITL.
Especially now that all the other shows on boxing on 4 and 5 seem to have finished. |
By:
when you consider that george foreman held a world title in recent years, (albeit a mickey mouse one. ) this was 30 years past his peak. how good was george foreman to be beating the worlds top 10 now. i would bet that no fighter of this age could walk in 30 years time, let alone fight. the era of ali, norton, frasier, foreman, will never be repeated.

evening tommy,
By:
'evening**
You're right. The golden era of boxers from the late 60s and all through the 70s were a joy to behold. I'm just glad I got to see the era. |
By:
i dont know why boxing has got so bad re the heavyweight title, but when you consider that tyson even today is probably the only one who can bring anything to the table regards a title fight, why,

Still got these Tommy from just after the Olympics (Khan)
Posted by : The Glimmer Man 29 Aug 19:01 The final score was a one sided 30-22, but after winning the first round 4-3, the kid got too confident, and ended up throwing a lot of leather at fresh air, getting unbalanced, and got well hammered 11-5. If you take away the 2nd round score it shows he well he did in the other 3 rounds, to lose them by only 19-17. Thought he may have switched to southpaw after the second round, but a great effort nonetheless.Frank Warren, keep your hands off him, and let him come back in 2008. Posted by : Sparkling Gold 29 Aug 19:02 do you honestly believe he will be back in 2008, glimmer man. you are clearly a muppet if you do Posted by : Bert 29 Aug 19:05 SG, unless you are Amir Khan, I don`t think you are in a position to say that. You`re not, are you? Posted by : Sparkling Gold 29 Aug 19:07 no bert i am not but you are clearly an extreme form of bacterial fungus. did ye all enjoy paula's national disgrace Posted by : The Glimmer Man 29 Aug 19:10 He''s 17 years old. Why go 'pro' now ? He took 30 good punches, and a lot of half slipped punches, in 4 rounds, but his balance is still not right. The same amount of punches with no helmet on will really hurt him, and may just put him off the game considering his age. Far better he learns a lot more without being fed a bum a month, as even bums can hit hard. I have never been, am not now, and never will be, a muppet. Posted by : DHB 29 Aug 19:11 Khan seemed to imtimate that he's in no hurry to turn professional. Posted by : The Glimmer Man 29 Aug 19:12 Good evening Bert, btw Posted by : Angoose 29 Aug 19:16 it's always mildly amusing (though ultimately sad) to witness a forum newcomer take on a pair of forum heavyweights ah well , I guess lessons are best learned the hard way ..... Posted by : Bert 29 Aug 19:20 Bacterial fungus? No, you`re not exactly hitting them out of the stadium tonight. You are not Amir Khan, yet you know his plans for 2008? Your name should be Petulengro. However, it is more likely that you would be found elsewhere on the fairground, possibly taking pennies on the waltzers? Posted by : Bert 29 Aug 19:21 Evening TGM Posted by : Sparkling Gold 29 Aug 19:21 when is paula coming back to england. she should be booed on her return. a goose ya i agree you are Posted by : Bert 29 Aug 19:24 You could go and meet her if you dad/uncle/brother lets you off the stall for the day. You can even get your tail plaited. Posted by : Loddy 29 Aug 19:29 Amateur boxing in Britain is in a pretty poor state right now. I like the idea of him going to the next Olympics, but just can''t see another four years in the amateur ranks doing him any good as there is probably no one in the UK who could live with him. Many promising UK boxers tend to just bypass the amateur ranks alltogether these days, I know of a local fighter who did just this **Macrinelli), he was always a big puncher and at amateur level there there was just no one out there that was worth him fighting. Personally I would have liked him to be at the Olympics winning gold for us which he might well have done, but can't blame him turning pro either as in the last four years his career has gone in the right direction and he has probably learnt far more as a boxer in the pro ranks than he would have done at amateur level. Posted by : The Glimmer Man 29 Aug 19:47 Loddy, your post makes a lot of sense, but Khan MUST get his balance right first. His idol is my idol, 'The Greatest', and you can see how he has studied footage of him. In his prime 'floating like a butterfly' kept hundreds of punches from hitting him, and his fast hands let him 'sting like a bee' and move away before any counterpunch was thrown. This was obviously against other heavyweights, but lightweights move a lot faster, and Amir is not ready for an 'over the hill' puncher yet. Youth and a fiery temperament do not mix well (there was only one Mike Tyson), he must refrain from a toe to toe slugging match if the fight is not going his way in the final rounds of a 'pro' bout. Perhaps sparring with slightly heavier punchers will teach him, but it's a hard way to learn your trade. I am sure his father and trainer will talk sense to him, and I wish the lad well whatever he decides. |

when i was a kid we had boys clubs, boxing clubs, the kids of today got playstations.
they dont do competetive sport in schools, amir khan, a special kid, he somehow found a way to pusue his sport. slightly off the subject, a friend of mine has a daughter, been doing gymnastics since she was 3, now she is british champ at 17, her parents are just working class, she has to go 60 miles, 3 times a week for training, special diets, contests all over europe, her parents are almost bankrupt chasing her dream. she cannot get funding anywhere. thats why we have no stars, most of them give up. katy says if she wins a medal at the next olmpics and just one paper says, so you won a medal for england katy, how do you feel, she told me she is gonna say, fu,k off. thats why we havent got any stars. we, sorry, our country will not support them. |
