Kq remember that one vividly.
I used to watch every fight ever televised from the age of about 6(?). You could always follow through with who was next in line and all the up to date news. It was terrible for many when it all, (mainly), went to PPV. The ITV 'Fight Night' that used to be on and the Beeb programmes were unmissable. Especially in the 70s. |
|
By:
Yeah mate, I remember all that too.
I know ppv is expensive but if you love the game it's money well spent. |

Joe Frazier admitted years later his one eye was closed'and had a cattaract in the other! Pure courage is an understatement!

Sabre and others
The Ali Frazier era was the golden age of heavyweight boxing imo. I'd rather watch videos and footage of those years, and know the result beforehand, than the krap that are champions today fight for a title I don't know the result of. |

I know Kq and now Sky seem to have most things, (I'm presently narked about not having been able to have seen the one day tournaments), it looks like I'm going to be forced into getting it.
It infuriates me though, that so many kids are being denied the chance to follow sports they might love and even participate in just because their parents can't afford it, or aren't bothered about sport themseves. |

By:
Tommy they will never teach boxing in schools, in case the left wing pinkos kids get a black eye.
It should be compulsory. It teaches respect to a certain degree, and discipline. If they want to fight, they should put on gloves and go one on one, not go marauding the streets with a bunch of football yobs. |

Couldn't agree more Campo and if some little nit-wit, (see insuance/carpet), doesn't drop it, I won't be using any gloves in a minute !

Just had a reply to my email requesting a boxing forum.
No dice. :-( |
|
By:
Typical.
Ask for a forum that's only for banned forumites, see how that goes ? |
|
By:
Kq.
Sorry to hear about your response. Can you please do another forumite a favour and restore 'posting no. 76' (?) for him. - Harry Cripps. Thanking you in advance. |

Has anyone got any knowledge on Jack Johnson fights ?
Other than reading a little about him and watching his life story as made for film, I've only ever been fortunate to see some grainy old clips of them. Now he really was an awesome individual. |

adebola, a few mentions of the said fight.
When i was at my first ever fight (Benn vs McClellan), a chap in front of me who was clearly a bit of a devotee of the sport turned around and said that it was the best fight he'd been too since Kaylor vs Christie, and the atmosphere that night was like the best ever football match i'd been too *10. Speaks volumes for that British middleweight eliminator. |
|
By:
I'm a friend of the man who was Benn's manager at the time and he was in the corner for that fight with McLellan. He says Nigel couldn't move for a week after the fight, it took so much out of him.

Kq, A thought has just passed my mind.
How about e-mailing Betfair to see if they will set up a forum, entitled; 'For all who want to talk about one event that's been happening today.' And 'For all opinions on pop/music/fashion/ in the news today, what you think about them, (especially if they're a 'minger' or not, etc.' As they seem to take up almost every spot available, sometimes, on chit chat. It doesn't take more than one ha'peth worth of sense, to realise you can speak to various people about one particular thought about a thing and include a diversity of views and opinions about the same, without everything else 'dropping off'. You don't need to create numerous posts about the same topic. If people just want to speak to certain others, can't they simply put out, 'Calling...' Like some others do? Would others like it if we put up ; 'What's the best super flyweight fight etc', going through every division, one by one, all in the same afternoon ? Somehow, I think not. People really ought to spare a thought for others coming in at different parts of the day to themselves, who may be looking for something in particular, whether it be important to them or not. It would also save others from having to do rescue, or resurrection missions ! |

There.
Got that off me chest !! Feel better now. |

I think you're right Tommy.
I'm all for a bit of silliness, but sometimes i'm missing out, or telling others about threads who are also missing out. That isn't to say this is a serious forum. Quite often the same subject eg Olympics, Live8 is on 50 or more threads when a post or two to just a few threads would do. Anyway, as you say, Mum's the word. |
|
By:
Study, glad to hear that.
Take no notice of me, I'm as**ers as a barrel of frogs ! |
|
By:
That isn't an expression I'm used to!!!!
Never mind mate, quiz starts soon. |

By:
Study, only just got back.
It's not one I'm used to either. I just made it up on the spot. I really am beginning to fear for my sanity ! |
|
By:
Tommy i thought i'd save this thread seeing as you work and don't want it falling off the bottom. Can't think of any fights, but i read somewhere that a boxer called Tony Aiola was so feared in the 80's that Hagler avoided him!Went to prison on rape charges and never came back.Tommy,Campo,do you recall this fighter?

Sabre.
Thanks very much, my friend. I don't go out to work, but usually like to work at studying form for the races etc and betting on them, in the day. I only usually pop in briefly once or twice in the day, then come back quite late at night. I was going a bit barmy yesterday as we had an 'attack' from the poker forum on Tuesday, when I along with Campo and a few others had to waste an hour sending things to the top, until they gave up.This had followed last weeks argy-bargy with codgerand the Live 8 multiple threads, all talking about the same thing. I'd last looked in at 1pm on Saturday and everything seemed okay. When I came back at about 10:30 ish that night, the only things that were left were what a few had been able to save. This had gone. Luckily I ended up speaking to Kq as his 'allergy' thread had turned into a boxing one. He managed to get this and another one, but when I asked him on behalf of someone else, to retrieve another, he couldn't. I guessed that the 'blanket coverage' might happen again when we won the Olympic bid, so I had to spend a lot of time yesterday trying to save things. Not just for me, but for others I guessed might not be about. As I said earlier and on other threads, it doesn't take a lot of nous, to 'think on' about other people. Hope today everything's back to normal, as I don't have the time today for vigilante missions ! Now, to get back to boxing, I think I do recall something about Tony Aoile, but my memory is hazy about him. Hope someone else can fill us in with the details. See you later Sabre. |

Back to fav fights...
Barrera - Morales (First fight) Easily one of the greatest of all time, if not THE greatest. Two genuine legends battling toe-to-toe for 12 rounds, round 5 possibly the best of them all. The only thing wrong? The awful decision made by the judges, giving Morales a splt decision. Barrera clearly won, but it took nothing away from a truly great fight. Barrera's had his revenge since, anyway. |
|
By:
Thanks very much Sabre.
I've been here all day again - see 'at least 20 dead' thread. Just seen this when it came in view. Will have a look at both later. |
|

Sabre, have read the web site now.
Sounds like another tragic tale for everyone, once again, in the annals of boxing. Absolutely outstanding article by, Greg Smith. The great thing is though, that the boxing prog. started after I'd read the article. That showed how sometimes boxing is so inspirational. The fighter who was the challenger for the belt, showed tremendous spirit when taking what was clearly a wrong, losing decision, so graciously. The 'classics' fight also showed the true nature of 'real men', when the loser of a very close contest clapped the victor whole-heartedly, when the verdict was given. |
|

Have no idea how that could be asterisked ! ?
Should read *v. ictor* |

I remember Tommy Ayala well. Banged up for rape when an undefeated pro. Did about 15 years.
Would have been one of the very, very best. |
|

Hello Kq.
Looks as though we have missed seeing someone very special. |
|
By:
He would have become a legend Tommy.

Evening Tommy and KQ,i hope you and kin are O.K. Every man i've ever met who knows boxing, raves about Ayala but i've never seen 1 bit of footage! I will pay money to see footage, where is it?

Can't sleep again Kq ?
Don't know if you read my posts on 'insomnia' or not this morning, but I can definitely vouch for Ian CP. Very intelligent and articulate. Very humorous too. Have spoken to him and others over there, once or twice. Regarding Tony Ayala; It certainly looks like it. If he was that good at 14. |
