I personally am glad that no British man has to go down a mine ..
not for any other reason than it was a terrible way of trying to earn a living ..just about every miner you can speak to will tell you THEY never wanted their sons to go down a mine ..
as stated up there ^^ by someone ..secretly they are pleased their descendants are out of it ....
but would never openly shout it out for "fear of letting their mates down"...

A lot of us can remember when the miners brought the darkness and lack of heat to this country in long stretches every SINGLE day during a part of the 1970's , just to bring Ted Heath's Govt to its knees because he was a Tory ....
Sod everyone else ...we are the miners and we are the Power ...
Maggie decided to end all that ..
--------
When Unions were set up to better the Hours , conditions and pay of workers they were BRILLIANT ...when they went political with a political agenda and the militants took over ..they lost the plot ...
The main thing that broke the Unions , and their greatest power "The Strike "....was the introduction of a postal or secret Ballot on strikes ..
when people didn't have to put their hand up in front of the aggressive militants -- but could vote the way they felt without the Bully Boys watching and fully intimidating them !!....

The treatment of people returning to work and breaking to the strike was terrible. The actions of Scargill equally so. The destruction of communities by the Prime minister and Police at the time was hardly on the moral high ground. A shameful period of the countries history all round. The reports of near civil war although mainly for headlines where not overly exaggerated. A time the country had probably not recovered from yet.

...................
Smashed the left into the long grass from which they have never, and can never, return. Hence Nu-Labour--- poor man's Tories.

But in doing so she did so much damage to British industry, that it has never, and can never recover. Hence the state the country has been in since.

too simplistic hoss.
We were on our way out of manufacturing . We had 100 years leading the way in the field but we were never going to be able to compete with the Asian countries as their costs are subsidised and their direct costs (labour) are a fraction of ours. And they don't have layers of EU bureaucracy to make them uncompetitive . It's happening to them now as a fair bit of metal bashing is being transferred to Brazil, where it is even cheaper than Korea to manufacture cars .

Yes there were external factors involved but other European countries' industries managed to survive, and with far stronger unions than we ever had.

Maggie's blind hatred of unions was a definite factor in the demise of big industry in this country.

We had to fight the enemy without in the Falklands. We always have to be aware of the enemy within, which is much more difficult to fight and more dangerous to liberty

Margaret Thatcher on the miners' strike

To describe thousand's of decent hard working people as the enemy within turns my stomach. The evil old bag spent much more money on closing the mines than it would have cost to keep them open. Not all striking miners were militants, just good people fighting for their jobs and communities, and yet people on here support the full weight of the state and it agencies being used to crush and then rub the faces in the dirt of many thousands of good people as payback for the victories of the miners over previous Tory governments. How ironic that the supporters of Thatcher who no doubt moan about immigration and foreigners coming over here pinching our jobs seem happy about selling out the miners for cheap foreign coal.

Blackburn I knew I wouldn't have to wait long, you sad tossbag, for the name calling to start. Why, you silly arsewipe, do you find it so impossible to post without insulting? It seriously makes your (to be fair, usually completely uninformed and ridiculous waste of typing) point even less valid. Having said that the points (?) made by you are barely worth responding to.

Apart from the few non-stop right wingers you grovel and creep to, you just irritate people into response. Me included.

You said something ridiculous earlier in this thread, which lots of people picked up on, and as always you cannot concede the fact, but resort, like the twunt you are, to calling me names or generally insulting.

Don't let any of this bother you though - not that you will, you're too stupid to take notice.

How nostalgic we can be for the days when unions were fighting for the workers.............like dropping breeze blocks on cars on the M4 killing taxi drivers ?????? That's why maggie was valued so highly, she took all that on and beat thugs and bullies.

Thatcher was the most UNpopular PM in modern history - in Scotland. For more reasons than just the Poll Tax. She and her right wing ilk contributed to the greatest redistribution of wealth in history from the poorest to the richest. And you muppets praise her?
