C the collapsing economy means few employers are taking on new staff. People entering the market for the first time are bound to be hit worst.

what is the uk rate of overall unemployment? is it 8% ish?

c) I'm at uni and couldn't be fecked, I have enough savings and get grants/bursaries that cover uni fees so have no urgent need.
By:
a pls with younger people is that you can pay them less money though as the min wage lower if you under 21.
By:
benefits, despite stuff to the contrary, are not too high!
Wages are too low. There is no real incentive to work and it seems there are other ways to survive. Also if 20% are out of work, does that mean that 80% are in work (a huge majority)? |
By:
Yep, and a lot of them have been duped into buying worthless degrees too. Unemployed and £000s in debt, what a start to your working life
By:
uni students arent classed as unemployed are they?
By:
I guess not, still though the can't be fecked applies to a lot I'm sure.
By:
And over 500,000 students started universities last September.... Most will leave university with rubbish degrees, big debts and end up on the dole or in a call centre on £5.45 a hour.

ive worked out after travel costs of 40p a mile im worse off working my 13 hours a week this week than i would be on the dole excluding travel to interview costs if i did sod all instead, im looking for a morning cleaning job to go with my other jobs but no luck yet.

By:

By:
Am no chav btw

By:
have you seen them out there? on the street corners? would you employ them? and to do what? last time i looked trying to frighten people as they go in the local spar wasnt classed as a job.
By:
More or less what I was going to say. The reason they're unemployed is because they're unemployable.
By:
took me a ridiculous number of applications just to get interviewed
not even considered for some pretty bad paid stuff too just got lucky to finally get an interview and taken on and for one of the best paid ones i applied for too |
By:
so many people going for so few jobs

When I started in banking back in the day, I found it was a viscious circle as I didn't have enough work experience during/before university. Seeing as I was against some guy for whom daddy had got him a summer placement I was stuffed irrespective of academic acheivements and didn't even get an interview. I eventually got in, but I remember it being a struggle at the start. That said, if we are talking about the chavs hanging around in the street, they are unemployable, and I imagine they don't even bother making any applications. They can't even string a lucid sentence together so how are they supposed to impress during an interview, irrespective of role? My general tip for a greater success would be to stop trying to pretend you have a black accent when you are white.

By:
Don't use that stupid terminology 'Chav' it exudes a sort of trendy cool-ness about what is in reality a GOOD-FOR-NOTHING B U M
By:
CHAV = A S S W I P E
By:
Chav was a word used by 'pikeys' to describe their kids.
It had fack all to do with todays youth. |
By:
From some of the 16-24 year olds I've encountered I'm amazed that only 20% are unemployed. They might have 57 A levels and a degree in applied media studies but they still can't read or write or add 3 numbers without a calculator.
By:
not all jobs require that tbf
By:
c) what few jobs there is you need experience and/or qualifications. large portion of 16-24 yrs olds have neither.
By:
Over18s females with big baps and a nice smile can be cashiers in bookies.
Or 'Customer Service Assistants' as they are known as these days. No brains required. |
By:
In my day, albeit quite a few years ago, when you left school the grammar school kids and the smarter kids from the secondary modern schools got the office jobs while the rest (what were known as factory fodder ) went as you can imagine into a factory.
Unfortunately although the schools still turn out plenty of factory fodder those jobs are no longer available. The authorities can pretend they are turning out academics with their phony qualifications but the employers aren't fooled. |
