And over 500,000 students started universities last September.... Most will leave university with rubbish degrees, big debts and end up on the dole or in a call centre on £5.45 a hour.

Nail on head, perhaps the greatest New Labour con of them all. Just not enough jobs in the economy that are suited to what's concentrated on in the new degrees. And millions of 21-25 year olds in £20k of debt at the start of their working lives.

Just remember a lot of these people will be aware of there situation before applying. I know a fair few who are willing to be in debt to go to uni as they would rather have a good few years before jumping straight into an office job or something like that. Personally I think that's fair enough.

I'm studying Accounting at Uni. Most people probably think it's dull, I think it's pretty decent plus it's a degree that I can then get a job with. I'm not naive, it's still going to be very very difficult to get a job, but I'm not studying some useless degree(I hope :^0), firms have openings for graduates so all being well I'll jump ahead in the ladder once I've started.

IF YOU WORK HARD AND REALLY WANT TO BE A SUCCESS YOU CAN EARN 50K A YEAR EASILY IF YOU NO GCSE'S.

THIS IS FACT.

Finished uni, went travelling and hadn't worked for a long time before then. I then got a job after a month or so of applying, was the 2nd interview I'd gone for. Maybe I got lucky? Not all doom and gloom from my perspective, but do agree it is tough without any previous experience on your cv.

Anybody currently in uni I would highly advise to try and get some relevant voluntary work on their CV. Although if somebody had said to me do some voluntary work alongside my studies I'd have laughed in their face, because the advantages are obviously long term.

benefits, despite stuff to the contrary, are not too high!
Wages are too low.

There is no real incentive to work and it seems there are other ways to survive.
Also if 20% are out of work, does that mean that 80% are in work (a huge majority)?

Gave up reading the thread when this tw*t gave his view. What a total clueless person he is. I assume I have been caught in his net.

I work in administration, you have to have some qualifications for that

LOL..well it made me chuckle anyway

The OP got most of the reasons in fairness,BUT the huge fools paradise that a large % of todays youth live in (ie getting 10A*GCSE/A LEVELS ETC and thinking that they are very intelligent.)Sure some will be but the amount of muck given out as degrees and the bizzare methods the unis do to up the grades really says it all.A very average to poor unmotivated workforce in the 18-24's etc.

The Chav question is also relevant as there's huge swathes of these untermenchen without education or the slightest intention to work.

It's not so much that wages are low at all..history will tell you they're not but benefits are in many cases preposterous and i dont blame the underclass for sitting on their ars@s when they can get an equal lifestyle.
