Gives me something to do at work and might improve my GK along the way.

I agree we all need to put our share in, but i dont understand hows this work ?:|

I mean if we all submit 3 Q`s each from those categories, whats to there will be an even distribution of home subjects. What 10 people in a league want History as a home subject, wouldnt we need alot more History Q`s than one that is not being used?

Great idea
In this years league
"never has so much been owed, by so many, to so few"

Apart from my Home play off Qs of course :)

Good point bjk.

We need everyone to opt in with their home subject first (and a second home subject if that option comes in again half way through the season)... then the allocating of questions can begin.

but, have you thought about becoming a League Referee ?

The idea of this is to make the quiz leagues by everyone, for everyone. The admin team should just be here to administer the leagues, not to have them as second unpaid jobs.

I know from experience that researching and setting 99 generic questions is about 5-6 hours work in total, which isn't too stretching in terms of doing them over more than 2 months. It was a lot harder for us last year to research questions on obscure home subjects, but the more general ones should be much more straightforward.

We actually think this will increase the strength of the leagues as we will be getting questions from a variety of different quizzers.

Furthermore setting questions actually does increase one's knowledge. My league form improved in the second half of the season, probably because of all the questions I was researching.

Another point is there is nothing worse than being criticised for your question setting (especially if youve done 2000+) but this way nobody will have any idea as to who set the questions, so I think this is good as well.

Of course the questions would be asked in a league other than your own.

We will publish three email addresses on here later for Premier, Championship and Cola players to each send their questions to a member of the admin team, which ensures that none of us can get to see questions for our own leagues that we are players in.

Initially the idea is for everyone to set one batch of 3 on each of the 16 main categories listed. One medium difficulty, one multi A-F (which mustnt be a gimme) and one hard question.

As Joe Jordan says, we are also looking for a few extra referees as well so any volunteers should let us know.

Hi guys..
I have decided i am going to withdraw from the league.
Its not so much about the question setting, its more because of the categories.
I have voiced my concerns before about having very general specialist subjects, and if we are having to choose 3, i just feel i would have no "home advantage" whatsoever.
From what i've seen so far, i don't think i have seen an entertainment question about anything during or after the 90's(as i often said during my matches "another old entertainment question"), apart from specialist subjects of course

My knowledge on the other subjects is poor, so I would probably have to choose science(ok) tv(probs be 80's q's and before) and films or sport, again will most probably be old questions.

and with having to set questions now, and then the fact that if i lose in this league i could be out of the leagues, i dont think all that effort just to lose week after week would be worthwhile

Just a thought Andy but it might be better to wait until you see the full picture which will be forthcoming soon when it's all finalised.

At the moment you seem to be basing your resignation on a series of assumptions which are all inaccurate.
By:
Andy Murray
When: 19 Nov 09 07:00
nirv gave the subjects, and said it'll probably be more than 2 we have to choose as our home subjects?
and its not really assumptive(is that a word?) to say that most questions will be old time questions, take a look at the ones asked this season

Andy, there's no chance of you finishing bottom of the League. That spot has been reserved for me.

Anyway, we'll keep the door open for you until the complete format is announced and you can make an informed decision then. We'd hate to lose you.

FWIW I think everyone providing 99 questions each is a great idea. From experience, however, the only thing I'd add would be that the 'brief' is watertight, with examples of what type the questions should be, how hard they should be & precisely how they should be set out. Cheers :)

I will put up guidelines for Qs at lunchtime.

For now, players should concentrate on the first batch of Qs, those for each of the 16 categories. We will give more information about what is needed for the second batch after the first batch is completed.

I have to say its a grey area what is a hard question, if you know it its easy but if you do not its difficult, you cannot have people compiling questions & trying to work out is it difficult enough.

Ovalman ...Quiz books seem to have the same questions going the rounds ...
What we would like are Questions that have not been seen if possible , but "should" be "answerable " by a person with a reasonable level of the subject or general knowledge .

Alex, I have done loads of quizzes over the years & I have always tried to make the questions a tad obscure without them being impossible, I have looked in on some matches last year & seen both ends of the scale to very easy to basically impossible, but like I say whats a difficult question to one person is somewhat a lot easier to others.

Pumpy - I agree with what you're saying re: past Qs but take a question on Mars for e.g.

For me, Q1 = easy, Q2 = hard, Q3 = gamestopper (as they say in quiz machine land)

1) Name one of Mars' two moons (A = Deimos, Phobos)
2) What percentage of Earths mass is Mars? (A = 11 per cent)
3) What is Mars axial tilt? (A = 25.19°)

[b]In other words, 1) = something most quizzers would/should know, 2) = tough, but guessable as most people would know Mars is smaller than Earth, 3) = impossible to guess, unless you were a total
