The whole Xmas Number 1 thing was ruined a long time ago imo
Used to be genuinely intersting; a number of decent singles (usually not released with being Number 1 at Christmas in mind) and the public would fairly determine the winner . Having songs recorded and/or released for the sole purpose of being Xmas No.1 (which would simply not be in the charts otherwise), with a monumental campaign of media control to ensure this outcome , makes it all contrived and boring. X Fctor Singles were not the beginning of this process, and the huge operation on behalf of Rage Against The Machine is a continuation of it , rather than a break. |

joe will go the same way as michelle MCMAA ANUS KFC? |
By:
so....by way of most peoples thinking on this thread...baa baa black sheep could have been released to prevent JM being no1.....says a lot about them than xfactor.

Why do people think RATM are some unknown yankee band?
Just cause they aren't mainstream doesn't mean they can't be big. They've sold millions and when the reformed tickets for their gigs were like gold dust. The free gig they promised will be massive. One of the last chances to see a seminal band. |
By:
ba ba black sheep would have been banned...
oh and reported |
By:
Leaze67 it certainly shows that music was always going to be the real loser, whoever won this nonsense.
By:
agree with most of that tobes except you couldn't say rage were responsible in any way for it's being used to get get the uk xmas no1 spot.
By:
A triumph over mediocrity, well done RATM :)
By:
so take out the top two and you think lady gaga being no1 would've been good journey? the charts have been sh1t for years and everybody knows it. cowell's arrogance in expecting a no1 is a great rerason why ratm being no1 should be celebrated.
By:
It is irrelevant what song they used, after so many years of a three month programme culminating in a xmas no 1, someone decided to try to put an end to it, to the suprise of most it has succeeded.
My guess is X factor will start a little bit earlier in 2010. |

Exactly- two students messing around on facebook have turned out to be more powerful than some ego driven purveyor of pap with 15 weeks of free primetime advertising at his disposal. Joe will be number 1 next week though.
By:
I always watch XFactor as it's a good bit of entertainment on a Saturday night but I wish they wouldn't release any records at the end of it so I'm glad Joe didn't get the Christmas no.1. The RATM record is not to my taste but at least they wrote it and played the instruments.
I hope the same thing happens next year but they choose a decent English group. |
By:
Exactly, Rage were a HUGE group for many years. The free gig will be a major event.
Now to do it again next year with 'Bullet in your head' would be really funny. |
By:
I wonder if someone will perform 'Killing in the Name of' at the auditions next year :^0

Have to disagree with Tobermory
Rolf Harris, Benny Hill, Little Jimmy Osmond in 3/4 years at the beginning of the 70s St.Winifred's School Choir, Renee & Renato, Flying Pickets at the beginning of the 80s Mr Blobby beginning of 90s Bob The Builder beginning of 2000s Musical tastes at Christmas have always been a little way off |
By:
Yes lady gaga being number 1 would have been better Easter.
I'm not saying I'm a fan of fan of lady gaga but it's the only tune in the top 3 there on merit. people have bought it because they like it, so fair play. Nobody would buy the RATM single in these numbers on merit ever. Nobody would buy the Joe single on merit if it wasn't stuck on the back of an Orwellian level brainwashing TV campaign. |
By:
makes me laugh how they choose some rubbish random song, that got as high as 25 on its last release..
yet people saying on here its a great song :^0 |
By:
it's a great song now :)
By:
It's at number 1 now, something you'll never manage Andy Murray :^0
By:
and how good was the one tyhat joe sang? apparently it';s a cover of a song i've never heard which attained the dizzying heights of no11. what about last year - nobody could deny hallelujah is a great song - how well did that do previously?
By:
Never heard it but my betfair balance tells me it's a great song.
By:
The biggest winner is Cowell.
RATM will surely understand that too but they're hardly going to complain at the mug money coming their way. |
By:
as you know liam, your b/f balance never lies!
By:
Money from sales goes to Shelter apparently.
By:
yeah some poor songs there Poppy , but at least prior to the 1990s (when some sort of TV tie in became significant) i do think there was an absence of Spin .
Often the Xmas Number 1 was rubbish , but there were equally awful songs Number 1 at other times of the year (usually horrendous sentimental stuff that gets the lowest common denominator vote) . What you didn't get though in the 70s /80s was the sense of it all being pre-ordained |
By:
Journeyman 20 Dec 19:13 The biggest winner is Cowell. Is it boll0cks! :^0 |
By:
Cowells ego more deflated than a shot down Zeppelin, how is Cowell a winner ffs !
By:
I have chosen next year's Christmas no.1. Everything Counts by Depeche Mode. They deserve a no.1 single after 30 years of selling out arenas all across the world and the lyrics are quite pertinent to Simon Cowell.
By:
You will see a similar hype every year from now on. Cowell will see to it.
the fact taht people seem to believe something of value has been achieved here utterly staggers me. |
By:
a plleasing thread,
Cowell apologists, irony pedallers - besides themselves shaking and in tears (FACT) |
By:
we'll see journey. if x-factor wants to release a single just in time for xmas again i'm sure there will be a similar campaign.
By:
Yeah, Cowell will be desperately keen to miss out on Xmas number 1 again. :^0
By:
kareoke cover vs Political song from authentic rock band (whether you like their music or not - I did at the time as it happens ) ...
yep no victory for music here |
By:
Andy Murray 20 Dec 19:10 makes me laugh how they choose some rubbish random song, that got as high as 25 on its last release.. yet people saying on here its a great song :^0 What a mug! :^0 |
