Shenanigans - typical liberal gobsh1te.

Too thick to realise that some people (a depressing number in this country) cant be saved, or reformed. Give them 20 years of suffering in a solitary cell, then turn the lights out. Revenge? Yeh, sure. But a better solution than putting this pond** back out on the streets in 10 years time.

call me odd but i dont really give a flying fook about rehabilitation. i read somewhere a policer officer said one guy was responsible for 90% of the burglaries in the area. ok he was probably exagerating but the point is the same people keep doing the same things, they get let out and do it again. i think the 3 strikes and youre out method would be good. convicted of 3 crimes and you never get released no matter how petty they are would be my idea of a way to tackle crime. prisons are full? build more of em. its ok whinging about how much it costs to keep people locked up but how much do they cost already with the endless amounts of arrests/court appearances that some people seem to go through.

Shenanigans you just sound like a typical do-gooder who has a as long as it doesnt affect me attitude then you dont want to know. I honestly believe in the future we'l have no choice but to bring back the death penalty as crime has already got out of hand and is getting worse, people like that dont reform!

if we had a referendum and were told that the money saved on long term imprisonment could be directed to kids/hospitals/tax cuts- just watch the landslide 'yes' vote

and the streets and homes would be safer

Just utter nonsense. Your own desire for revenge is the only valid argument, and if you want that, plenty of countries you can go to where they practice it.

Without taking sides it would be interesting to know just where Shenanigans lives and how often his life has been personally affected by the feral class.
On the one hand you can have sympathy and compassion for so many youngsters from broken homes, with no role models and no respect.
But that compassion would be tested to the limit if it was your loved one who had been kicked to death.

judges are given sentencing guidelines by the SGC - said 'guidelines' are supposed to be adjusted up and down based on the culpability and harm factors specific to that crime (ie the aggravating factors) - these include things such as whether the crime was planned, whether it was carried out as part of a gang, whether more harm was inflicted then 'necessary' to commit the actual crime (ie a robbery where someone gets battered when the criminal could have taken the money without violence), whether they were armed etc etc. in addition a number of potentially mitigating factors will be considered (ie mental illness) and finally any 'discount' for a guilty plea will be consider - 1/3 off for admitting it on first interview by police, 1/4 off once trial date set, 1/10 off if plead guilty at doors of the court or once trial begun.

It doesn't matter whether they are your loved ones or not, life without parole is the best alternative to the death penalty.

Hopefully they'll kill a few more scroats inside and save us some money.

The Liberal Experiment is over.
Well meaning Liberals have had the upper hand in influencing policy for the last 40+ years. They are all over the television and radio.
It needs to change. In this particular case I would say 30 years with no parole and make it hard for them.
In future similar cases?
I would allow a film to be made about it from capture, through the trial and for the first two years in jail.
I would make it compulsory for all schoolchildren to watch the film at age 12 as part of the national curriculum.
It would frighten the life out of 95% of them and we would be less likely to have them ending up as bad 'uns 10 years later.
Only a small step I know,but it's a start.

I had a moment yesterday during which I was genuinely scared for my life, you could all have been writing about me. But it just goes to show how little respect these disgusting little chavs have for other people.

I clipped the wing mirror of a car whilst driving thru one of W.Yorks. less salubrious areas. Being a decent citizen/idiot, I stopped and went back intending to survey the damage and apologise to the owner, who I assumed was in the shop that it was parked outside of. A fat, Jeremy Kyle reject of a girl, aged about 19 jumped out of the car and was spitting vitriol in my face before I could even open my mouth. I patiently explained that I didn't have to come back, most wouldn't, and that I had done so to apologise. That clearly didn't impress her and she told me that she was going into the shop to get her man, who would 'have' me.

I felt sure that he couldn't possibly be as unreasonable and so stood my ground. It was only when I heard the roar from inside the shop, "WHICH F***ER HAS DONE WHAT?", that I started to panic. All those stories of people getting kicked to death or stabbed over trivial matters ran thru my head. Which is ridiculous really, why should I have to contend with this fear for clipping a wing mirror?

Fortunately, what came out of the door was about 2" shorter, 3 stones lighter than me and despite being clearly addled with smack he was able to make the correct assessment of his chances. Nonetheless, had I been a frail pensioner or young kid, I'd've no doubt been on the wrong end of a good kicking, maybe worse.

My question is, why do these things happen. The answer is, that I fear that there is no effective deterrent.

There needs to be a coming together between the limp wristed luvvies and the Dirty Harry fraternity and this is how you do it:

For the Dirty Harry's there is no such thing as deterrence in the vast majority of cases because most of these scroats are so far beyond rational analysis of such a kind. To the extent that they do think it is to assume that they won't get caught. It is very hard to deter such an individual with indeterminate penalties at an indeterminate time in the future. So forget about deterrence in that sense. Of course as the previous poster illustrated they are cunning enough to make quick decisions on the spur of the moment about their own physical well being.

Equally for the luvvies you need to wise up to the fact that most are beyond rehabilitation and will just twist you round their little finger promising that yes of course they will take that job at Asda which you have kindly set up for them and never return to robbing old grannies. Of course they se the error of their ways because it gets them what they want namely back on the streets and then, "feck you dicckkhead".

No deterrence and no rehab means one thing. Convict them and lock the **ers up and keep them there until they are no longer a threat to society. Nobody robbed an old granny from behind bars but plenty have on community service or tagged or any of the other wheezes which the luvvies keep coming up with not to send the feckers down.

Hardly. But I do think there is something between hanging them up and taking them stock car racing.

I think Dobbo has it right when he talks about taking less lenient action early in the criminal careers of these lowlife. Effective drug and alcohol rehabilitation programmes would help - I have seen plenty of people turn their lives around after successful treatment. Better detection rates would also help - as someone has already alluded to, I am sure that the primary concern at the point of committing a crime is not whether you get 3 years, 5 or even 10, but how likely it is that you will be caught.

My argument is not that the current system works, nor that we live in a world in which by being nice to people they are nice in return. I just think it's very easy to say 'string 'em up' without actually considering whether that is the best method of tackling the problem.

And for the person who asked where I live, it's true that I now live in the sticks and am largely unbothered by "feral" youths, though I have lived in Stoke Newington (before Church St became little Islington), Stratford (not the one upon Avon!) and other less salubrious parts of the country in my time.

the worst thing about these kind of attacks is that theyr 'e apparently happeing on a more regular basis, there are far too many violent, chav type renogades than we know what to do with.
Parents are partly to blame and the only way forward is some kind of forced parental education.

Althoughg usually leaning toward the liberal i think at this moment the only answer is wholesale locking them up just to get them off the streets. There is no time for discussing/introducing rehabiliatation or for tinkering with family life. Build more prisons and impose custodial sentences when they start attacking and harrassing not after five court appearances. Disrupt the cycle first and worry about mending "the family" later.

I think the points Shenanigans raise are pertinent. When you see attitudes like some on display here, the genuine baying for blood, an actual URGE to see these people killed, you become uncomfortably close to those you chastise. The revenge isn't yours to seek, yet you want bloodshed. What would that satisfy in you? Where would you stop? One would surely not be enough. You have to see the kind of path that leads down.

However. At the same time, I am not the biggest believer in rehabilitation for certain individuals - I think some traits are genetic, and cannot be simply 'trained' out. Paedophilia, rape, any crime that is performed on another person for no motive other than the act itself - these all indicate psychosis, a fundamental lack in human compassion that most others possess. For these people, I do not believe they should interact with normal society.

So what to do. Well, for all the abuse it gets, I believe the Judicial system has an INCREDIBLY hard job, one that many of the biggest mouths on here would fail at miserably. Build more prisons? Wait for the 'waste of taxpayers money' stories to come out. Longer sentences? 'Taxpayers money grumble grumble'. Certain people will find opposition to either way, so you have to plot a course somewhere in the middle, and it's a fine line. Death penalty? Well, I still have the compassion that I suggest others lack, so I would not agree with killing people for what is essentially mental illness.

While the OP of this thread doesn't suggest so, it is incredible difficult to get these things right. I would suggest more time should be spent on the families of victims involved, rather than satisfying our own personal crusades.

Some sensible points but I have never heard a single person complain about the cost of prisons per se. They might complain about the cost of keeping prisoners in comfort.

As I see it if we can export call centres to India then we can explore the possibility of contracting out prison services to somewhere like Africa where those sentenced to over a set period can be held for a fraction of the current cost.

Luvverly jubbly.

its not difficult, its just the long standing easy cop-out saying it is.

more prisons need not be that expensive, alot of the expense comes from all the staffing and pointless schemes. one big prison for all the worst worthless** types, never let em out of their cells so hardly need any staff. no tv, no library, no gym no nothing. feed em 5p netto beans in a dog bowl an let em spend all day farting an**ing. how expensive can that be?

Although it is obviously not the answer for many reasons the death penalty for any crime would instantly remove the criminals from the streets and make other potential felons think very hard before committing any crime.
It also would remove the need for prisons.
