Quite a few Aussie Gangster series. One featured Chopper in it but he wasn't the main character. Will try and remember the names. It starts out with two stand over guys, then the Lebanese kid who gets stabbed and then the two families at war. Quite engrossing.

"what good is parliament if it does not represent the people". Well done to whoever recommended PETERLOO. Not yet finished but so far so really good. I like the attention to details: trade by barter, the teeth etc. It touches on issues relevant today. The common man today has more 'toys' but I am not sure about our ability to resist tyranny. No spoiler as I have not seen the ending. The forum is a great place when we share: tips, films whatever.

Seen a couple of films in the last couple of days that I really enjoyed both based on real life events, Hotel Mumbai which recounts the 2008 Taj Hotel siege in Mumbai, India was particularly well crafted and compelling. Also, 6 Days which recreates the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege isn't quite as noteworthy but enjoyable all the same.

Not saying it's a film i'd recommend actually as i found it really quite disturbing and difficult to watch, an old B/W film made in 1932 about a group of Circus performers who made a living by using their natural disabilities to entertain people, film was banned here for years and wasn't shown till the 60s, somehow don't think they'll be able to show it again.
Freaks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czH_6eOHtww Have to say i thought the scenes where the man with no arms or legs moving across the floor really upsetting. Actually the film is about love, betrayal and revenge, so the actual story is very good. |

That Tod Browning film is great stewarts, great shout. As you say a little bit disturbing when you first see it, but handled well and you soon get into the story. "Gooble gobble, we accept her, one of us!" - that stuck in the mind!

Seeing "Jeepers Creepers" mentioned at the start of the thread reminded me of another favourite: "The Day of The Locust" (1975, John Schlesinger), a film (based on a book) about the early days of Hollywood. Not a perfect film, but a bit of a cult favourite, and worth sticking around for the
ending. (I think it featured in Alex Cox's Moviedrome series many years ago).Features the great Burgess Meredith, and William Atherton who later went on to become the "a$$hole" reporter in the Die Hard films. Donald Sutherland plays a character who's name was the source for a certain, very famous, cartoon character - 10pts to anyone who can name it! |

That's right Afterthought, Donald Sutherland plays a character called Homer Simpson. But you're right, points aren't worth much these days, I should have offered a free toilet roll!

Need a recommendation for good WW2 films. Recorded a few that were on round VE Day and fancied giving them a whirl.
Put The Eagle Has Landed on before and I thought it was just hackneyed, unbelievable tripe and turned it off again. I seem to remember liking them when I was a kid but worried I'll find the acting and scripts awful now. Can anyone pass on any of those old WW2 films that were genuinely good. Oh, and my recommendation is Chef. Was on a couple of nights ago on Film Four and will probably be round again in about 6 weeks ago. Shamlessly feel good but great cast (Favreau clearly getting some of his Marvel mates interested in a proper film while taking half an hour to get a 3 second clip in front of a green screen for Iron Man 19), clearly made from a genuine love of cooking, great, great music and a tale as old as time of workaholic, absent dad reconnecting with his kid but it's done very well. Just don't watch if you're hungry. |

Best WW2 film of recent years is undoubtedly Hacksaw Ridge
|
|
By:
Agree that Fury and Hacksaw ridge are both brilliant War films, the latter being a true story, both very gory. Dont forget Inglorious B@stards either, surreal but a great film.
|
|
By:
agree about The Eagle has landed ,was looking forward to a good war film but found it a bit far fetched and cliched ,couldnt take it seriously .
|
|
By:
With the exception of Braveheart, Mel Gibson's directorial output has been exceptional - and characterised by an exceptional relish for gore.

|
By:
Oh, and my recommendation is Chef.
I enjoyed it too PP. |

A film that I enjoyed very much is Shadowlands with the superb Anthony Hopkins playing the author of the chronicles of Narnia, C.S.Lewis. Fans of A H will love it.
