Yep, but winning the Champion Hurdle is worth 10x the JLT - absolute no comparison in my book - thus just a matter of time. If Altior tags along he'll be 11/10 but he is not (have to take the word of the connections).

With Min out they should go for the Arkle with him imo.

That would then leave the way clear for Bellshill to run in the JLT for Mullins/Wylie.

^Not that I'd fancy Bellshill myself in any race at Cheltenham.

Bellshill needs further than the JLT distance to show his best; Yorkhill is no penalty kick in the JLT; Top Notch has the class and form to win the JLT with/out Yorkhill; Coney Island is also a formidable opponent in the JLT. As such, I believe the best option for Yorkhill post Faugheen's scratching is the Champion Hurdle unless Altior turns up - Altior is the king (post Faugheen) over 2m.

Some interesting debates on here.  Yorkhill will surely switch as owner and trainer know Nicholls Canyon is not good enough and even if Wylie knows he is not the primary owner at Mullins, why would you not go for the Champion Hurdle over the JLT?  You have been Yanworth at the festival before and the trainer has a handle on the other horses from last years Supreme through Min and the last 2 CH horses through Faugheen and Annie.

Talking of last years Supreme, Altior is the fly in the ointment but why would Nicky "push" for a CH bid when the Arkle is a gimme and he also already has Buveur and Brain for the champion so no sense for him to push that switch through.

Maybe Douvan could be supplemented and win both the CH and QM in the space of 24 hours.Laugh

What would Ruby want to ride in the Champion Hurdle? Of course, Yorkhill.

Suspect Reaseheath has hit nail on the head regarding the key indicator being Yorkhill entry in the Flogas Novices Chase at Leopardstown on Sunday and whether he runs or not. Not long to wait.

Read an article this evening saying Yorkhill isn't running on Sunday - Bellshill is - and that Willie says "at the moment" Yorkhill is going straight to Cheltenham over fences.

All this apparent formality of yorkhill being rerouted to the champion hurdle is a little premature in my opinion. I still can't get graham wylie's interview out of my head at the start of the year where he said when asked about the arkle "I think he needs further his most disappointing runs have been over the minimum"
Just because he beat yanworth over 2.5 miles I really don't get this assumption he will obviously beat him over 2 miles!!
Whether it was just one run too many or not at punchestown last year no one can argue it was his worst run and even though he won over 2 miles at sandown it was an absolute bog and he beat as proven now stayers so probably not the speed test the champ hurdle will be.
I am probably being naive but I think mr wylie thinks yorkhill could be a gold cup horse and irrespective of ruby and mullins wishes I think he will insist he carries on down the novice chasing route and more so as he has got a champion hurdle candidate (probably not good enough) in his colours ready to run for him!

Haha yes foyles that was one of my first thoughts!!!! Thought I was clever backing her for the JLT and then the RSA only for her to be entered in the arkle so luckily covered that when min was still in the race.

Having looked at it again, that does make sense Roger - Yorkhill only ran just over a fortnight ago whereas Bellshill's last run was over Christmas.

Yorkhill's last run did n't impress me particularly and the opposition in the JLT is shaping up to be quite decent so he looks short enough for that race to me.

Don't really have an opinion as to whether they'll switch him or not 'cos I'd just be guessing.

yeh I think so too.
Still always nice to have one less to worry about.
Actually for the festival I think it would be better if he went CH,more the merrier for a top championship race I reckon.

Paddys bet Yorkhill destination, JLT 5/6, Champion 6/4, 9/2 Arkle.

They bet 9/2 he goes off Champion Jolly.

same here barnesey, done me dough on the jlt and rsa only had around a tenner on each but at big odds ,had to have a go when she was declared for the arkle ,wether she runs is debatable but with min out lot more chance they may have a try .

Mullins will tell Wylie that Yorkhill's jumping this year hasn't been quite good enough, so rather than continue it would be better to revert back to hurdles for now and start again next year with a bit more intensity in a bid to work towards the GC.

In reply to this Wylie will promptly roll over and let Mullins tickle his tummy.
By:

When: 07 Feb 17 17:45
It's harsh to criticise Wylie imo. Most owners in the WPM yard will do what he tells them, and rightly so.

If WPM told you your horse could win a Champion Hurdle instead of a JLT, wouldn't you be tempted?
By:
duffy
When: 07 Feb 17 17:57
Yes definitely, but I'd have had him in the race all along. It's just that this way just displays once again that mullins is using Wylie for his own ends and although Wylie may profit, it doesn't really alter the point.

It would be kind of nice if Wylie said , No, I don't want the horse messed about with, stick to the chasing plan.

Mullins quote a week or so ago claiming that Yorkhill could be a CH horse in time was laughable, it was if novice hurdling then aborted novice chasing back to hurdling is some sort of natural progression. The Faugheen situation was obviously going bad and he was scrambling to lay the foundations for Yorkhill's switch.
By:
Can't Catch Me
When: 07 Feb 17 18:52
I disagree Duffy. At the start of the season, when they sat down and made plans, WPM must have felt Yorkhill would have little chance of beating Faugheen and Annie Power. And they surely wouldn't make plans for Yorkhill based on the fact both those two wouldn't make Cheltenham.

And also, it does appear Yorkhill wants more than 2m. They will only be tempted, and this is only being debated, because it is an unusually weak CH.

I think people are getting carried away by the WPM comments about Yorkhill. Correct me if I'm wrong but as I understand it some journalist/presenter asked him the question along the lines of "how good is Yorkhill?" to which he answered something like " I always felt he was good enough for a Champion Hurdle etc etc" or words to that effect.I wouldn't read into that as an intention to switch codes.

I am very surprised by the quote of 9-2 for him to start favourite in the Champion.

Surely he would be favourite if they go for it?

Walsh said today that Annie was switched because she was "bombing" on the gallops, and that Yorkhill would have to be going "very, very. very, very" well to be switched. So, if his name appears in the supplementaries we can be sure that it is because that powerhouse operation fancy him. His form is very good, and there will be a lot of punters backing Mullins and Walsh blind anyway.

I don't know if he'd win it, but surely he'd be favourite? So, isn't that 9-2 worth taking?

By:

When: 08 Feb 17 07:49
Bellshill running Sunday, they would not have both running as is the norm.

If Yorkhill did end up as fav, I doubt if their have been many favs that have only one won hurdles race over 2m, and that was a heavy ground slog beating 00 Seven as a novice.
By:

When: 08 Feb 17 13:08
^ That may be so but it's probably moot.

You could have made a case for Annie Power being a ridiculous favourite (she was 0-2 at Cheltenham, warmed up for it by winning a three-runner Mares race at 1-20, and hadn't run over 2m for over two years). But she went off favourite and sluiced up.

I'm surprised Yorkhill is not amongst the probable runners in the Flogas on sunday as he badly needs the experience if he is still JLT bound - it's 3 weeks since his last facile win/run - despite his owner has Bellshill as well. I do not know if he's been/would be entered in the Red Mills Trial Hurdle on 18th Feb, but I hope he runs there.

With Closutton stable it is not what they say, it is what they do not say or categorically do not rule out that is telling (from experience).

Well moot or not Tom, just saying as it is.
Not sure many would have said AP was a ridiculous fav.She had all sorts of top form over a few years and a fair old weight allowance.
Anyway, I did not say Yorkhill should not be fav, just stating facts about his 2m form.given the likely opposition and more to the point his connections, he probably will be.
By:
buddeliea

That is of course if he actually runs in the race.
