Wouldn't touch 2/1 with a bargepole. Don't care how good he is, or could be. He has to win a race at 4/5 to even go off fav for a race he's 2/1. Chu chu.

There is no way they will duck Sunday and there would be no point either especially if they think they can win at Cheltenham. If a front runner can win at the festival he has a better chance of staying in front at Leopardstwn but Leopardstown is a bit deceptive and needs a bit of getting too. If UDS stands up and gets beat on Sunday I would be amazed if he went to Cheltenham and Vautour would go for the Arkle. So they need to find out on Sunday and its unlikely they'd find out at Doncaster unless there is an unknown in the long grass.

Well Ireland Or Doncaster,as long as he turns up at Cheltenham in March,thats all that matters to me. I would be surprised after all they have said, if UDS don't run on Sunday,but this yard never ceases to surprise me!! |

I should have added that he would have an easier race at Docaster which might help later at Cheltenham. But unless they know enough already they must run at Leopardstown.

I think if Vautiur had not have run last weekend the UDS might have been a doubtful runner this week. As he did run then surely UDS does run.

Do people not get tired about writing the same things every year about Mullins?
Denman and Kauto avoided each other away from Cheltenham, Big Bucks stayed over Hurdle because of them too. I really don't understand the same complaining about a stable keeping its best horses apart away from the big 4 races at Cheltenham. It's always been the case and people should take it as a given. |

what where Denman and Kauto supposed to race each other in pre Cheltenham though??
Denman clearly despised Kempton the one time he ran it when they'd no other choice as a prep after his problems and he was hardly going to be thrown into a Betfair Chase given how much he loved Newbury and the Hennessy |

The Arkle is the top novice chase not the JLT. I know you think a Chelt winner in any race is all the same but I feel certain races are far more prestigious. Vautour the supreme winner should be aimed at the Arkle along with his stable companion. If Big Bucks had won the Hennessy then Nicholls would have run him in the Gold Cup. There is no doubt about it. Mullins just wants winners. In any race, he doesn't care. JP has and always will run more than one if he think that is their best opportunity. You know as anyone one does that UDS should have run in the Champion Hurdle last year, and if was in Nicholls' care then he would have done. |

Hard to disagree with any of that to be fair.
All the time Mullins has the best horses we are deprived of them facing each other. Wonder what he would have done had Faugheen been born a few years earlier?? If UDS wins the Arkle and then the Queen Mum,how will he explain the non appearance of UDS in the CHurdle?? |

just because he won supreme doesnt mean arkle is the race to go for. like i said a while back he won it like a stayer. yes you need a stayer to win the arkle but whether he was on or not vautour has shown frailties in the jumping department this season. if he is not on song in the arkle at that pace he could fall or lose all chance. at least in the JLT they won't go like the clappers and he can settle down.
if vautour was mine i'd have big reservations about the arkle based on his chasing career so far. |

He really doesn't have to explain it to anyone except the owner. The owners of UDS and AP could have run their horse in the CH last year if they had so desired.

Brandy - I'm not saying horses should be kept apart, but saying they are always kept apart by the same Stable prior to Cheltenham and all trainers want to keep their best ones apart. Mullins has an embarrasment of riches so it's he is most obvious in this regard recently.
My point is, this happens every year. We should be pragmatic and accept it. It's the way it is and won't change. Should we save keystrokes on it? |

You can live with a trainer keeping horses apart in their prep races as long as they run in their true races at the Festival. This is the difference with the Kauto/Denman analogy and Mulliins. The Festival is about the best horses facing each other. UDS and Hurricane Fly last year and UDS and Vautour this year would have met if the horses were with a different trainer (and arguably Quevega and Big Bucks). This is what is disappointing from the sport's perspective (leaving aside everyone's betting biases).

I disagree Wicketd, but that's just my view on it. For example had he been with Henderson who hadn't had a Gold Cup winner he'd be back over Fences.

He went over hurdles cos he was a Shiite jumper of a fence !

its impossible to say. his chasing career could have been different with henderson or any other trainer. the owner was clearly happy to win the world hurdle every year and always talked down the possibility of going over fences.
maybe they were schooling him over fences at home and he just wasnt jumping well. his hurdling was mustard in his later years. chasing and hurdling are worlds apart |

seems many are prepared to crab UDS because of the opposition he has faced and the races he didn't run in - WPM is clearly a very talented trainer but perhaps this is a case of not realising how good UDS actually is or maybe an owner who is not very assertive about raising his horse in class or another multitude of reasons HOWEVER notwithstanding good to firm going which it won't be on the first day of the festival unless the watering system fails! i believe UDS will win the arkle after romping the irish arkle this weekend

For what it's worth, I've just been looking at Tues results of last year and Timeform have the ground as being Good to Firm. Number of track records broken I think that day as well so Prob stacks up.
If we get similar weather then there's every chance it could be the same this year |

Yep Tory - Vautour broke the track record, then Jezki broke it again. Was seriously quick ground, I'm hoping it comes up soft as always. I'd love to see Fly run a huge race at 11yo.

If Mullins warned he wasn't ready for a Champion Hurdle after only 5 career runs all on soft ground, that we'd go for 50k in France in March instead and and then 65k in April where we'd be sure he'd get his ground. I'd take the 115 thousand pounds. One hundred and fifteeen thousand pounds. Without even a hint of a question. The horse would have a new jockey and super quick ground and the best Champion Hurdle field see in a long long time to face as a 6yo. With the reasoning being, people wanted my horse in there to ensure a strong pace.
Of course trying to win money rather than chucking your horse into a race you and your trainer feel is too much too soon for him is something of a big big sin. Highland Retreat goes to Limerick on 15th March for a €30,000 first prize Grade 2 Mares Chase. She'll get her ground and hopefully a very beatable field. But of course she should run at Cheltenham where we've no chance of prize money in an RSA. Or is Harry wrong not going for prestige?? |

If they thought he was good enough for a Champion Hurdle he'd be going for it this year and not sending both UDS chasing. I think Mullins felt UDS would set up the race for others who could change gears on good ground, where galloping and jumping is far more achievable from the front over fences. I expect they schooled him and saw he was a natural over the fences and so felt he had to go chasing.
For me, nothing can beat a horse making all over 2 miles over fences. People just plain love it. Remember how excited people got for Sanctuaire after he made all in the Celebration Chase. I loved Twist Magic making all to win his 2nd Tingle Creek. |
