Hope you're right sint, as whilst I have backed him to win any race, I've also backed him to win the Arkle.I don't believe WPM will declare his hand until very close to the Festival, principally because he doesn't have to. Ruby made an interesting comment about Champagne Fever's target on the Morning Line yesterday.....basically he will go for whichever of the QMCC and Ryanair looks the easier race. Suspect he will do the same thing with Vautour.
His problem with the novice chasers is Gigginstown, who have a particularly strong hand this year. I think it was CVByrne who said that WPM doesn't choose the races for the Gigginstown horses, they do. Looks very like Vautour will have to beat Valseur Lido in the JLT, which wouldn't have been on the agenda a couple of months ago. VL certainly isn't going to take on Don Poli in the RSA, whose form was franked again yesterday when Wounded Warrior hosed up at Naas and is probably 4 miler bound. |
By:
Yep,probably wont know plans for most of them till close to the festival, and not a given at all re any of them.
Wounded Warrior and Don Poli are interesting now you come to mention it,going on what ive seen this season both could run big races in the RSA or the 4 miler, fascinating to see where they end up,both in same race or more likely split between the 2. Will VL go JLT if Vautour does or would he take on WW or DP in the RSA?? Its a pain for antepost betting, but fascinating also. |
By:
I'd imagine it'll be Arkle - Clarcam, JLT - Valseur Lido, RSA - Don Poli and 4-miler - Wounded Warrior. Reel Steel, Very Wood and Rule The World might run somewhere too but they'll be second strings. It's worked out alright for Gigginstown as they don't seem to have any hard decisions to make as regards novice chase targets and they can have a runner in all the races.
By:
I don't think Gigginstowns plans will affect what happens with Vautour because simply they are owned by different people and everyone wants a runner at the Festival. The issue is that WPM & Ruby want to keep him away from UDS, at this moment in time, but that is not to say they will do at the festival. Last season Ricci stated all season the Arkle was the target for CF and he has stated the same with Vautour so we'll just have to wait and see.

By:
I will be amazed if it's not JLT after that

By:
Think I prefer Valseur Lido out of the two (never thought I'd be saying that)
By:
Why? CF looked a stayer last season they still ran in the Arkle.
By:
CF & Vautour look carbon copies to me.
By:
when did cf look a stayer?
![]() he looked alright, travelled nice and won easily but i certainly cant back him for chelt unless he comes through a better test after what happened lto. he had it all his own way today. dont like it when he gets in tight to fences either |
By:
Nothing to gleam from that at all. Dont know if he will be better over further cos they never went a clip
By:
Judging by Walsh's comments that s the JLT
By:
did ruby just say, 'always ridden him as a stayer but doubt he'd get further'?
![]() |
By:
Ruby used the word "stayer" about 6 times in 20 seconds to Gary O'b - I'd say JLT after that too.
By:
^^^ Both beat me to it
![]() |
By:
then he threw in 'you need a stayer to win an arkle'
By:
wicketd, he said "no doubt he'd get further"
By:
One of the best horses in the yard, 7 weeks out but we dont know where he is going you![]() |
By:
ah thanks!
By:
will be a disgrace if he doesnt run in the arkle.
By:
why?
By:
Sint. Regardless of Real Steel falling, I thought the best he travelled all race was from the last. Head in his chest in the final furlong and looked like the further he went the better. On soft ground. Hope I'm wrong obviously.
By:
because he is the best 2 mile novice hurdler from last season and will only be running in the 2m4f because of others in the stable, not about ability.
By:
Walsh has definitely let us know where he wants these two horses to run....what gives away even more is how here he says...I've always ridden him like a stayer, and then goes on to say that...I suppose you need a stayer to win an arkle ..but crucially he says it with a negative tone not intending to use it as an example as why Vautour should run in it.
Last year when we knew he wanted CF to run in the arkle, he boasted that CF would stay further but said...you need a stayer to win the arkle and said it with a far more positive tone intending it to support his claim to run in the race. |
By:
i dont agree. i said on here a while back he oustayed them in the supreme, but that he's not short of speed. its about what race is best for the horse. i know they say he was never travelling, but that mistake and performance behind clarcam must have them wary of going 2m over fences at the festival.
i think with the way he gets in tight to so many fences, he has to go JLT |
By:
do they have different fences in the 2m4f race than the arkle ?
By:
so the JLT and arkle are run at the same pace?
By:
Different course and different distance
By:
Walsh does whats best for Walsh and fair play to him. He wants both rides so one will go Arkle(Un De Scaux) one will go JLT(Vautour)
By:
i would think you have to jump well in both races to win.
I understand that the faster pace wont allow for mistakes but he would win the arkle in a canter. |
By:
You all know you take what Ruby says as gospel at your peril, never mind trying to read between the lines....
![]() |
By:
Why would he win the Arkle in a canter?? Don't you rate the opposition??
By:
Not really, UDS is a totally unknown and it is just guesswork on how good he is. Vautor has already proved he is miles better than the others over hurdles and has cheltenham winning form on decent ground, i know chasing is different but he could run in a champion hurdle.
I respect Clarcam but the others have a look of handicappers too me. |
By:
I'd want to see vautour in the arkle, fired from the front just like we seen him do in the supreme where he cut the field to ribbons with his jumping, there would be every chance that on better ground going quicker he would jump better....for me this fiddling of some of his fences is brought on because he's just going slower than suits him, which the extra distance and a more restrained ride is causing....not playing to his strengths.
By:
Yeah i agree with sonko. I was just about to say alot depends on next week, plus the owners have a say. PP price still sticking out like a soar toe. Hopefully Ricci calls the shot.
By:
I listened to the interview 3 times and thought he said 'doubt he'd stay further'. What's why I listened to it so many times as was surprised. May well have heard him wrong but that's what I thought he said
By:
Duffy,How on earth will he get to the front early on? or are you suggesting UDS don't run??.
We can all forget UDS not running, thats done and dusted...unless a disaster happens next Sunday. |
By:
He did Tory say doubt hed stay further.
By:
stay further than what?
By:
budd
What I meant was what I thought his best scenario would be in a perfect world. |
By:
Ah sorry, I listened to it twice and thought he said "no doubt he'd stay further".
If he did say "doubt", then that's a very strange quote. |
