Interested to know why the Darlan incident should stop a novice entering the CH, according to regular fries. Darlan wasnt a novice at the time. To me it tells you to strike while the iron is hot, because you never know what will happen with horses.Alderluck.

Agree re the Darlan incident. His pulling shows his inexperience though and for that reason he may be better running against novices, rather than battle hardened horses at this stage of his career.

No point running in CH if it is to help his development for next year.

Or let him run in a field of 10 or so with plenty of room or a field of 24 novices scrimaging and fighting to get round.....sensible

the way he pulls 20 of the 24 will be behind him anyway after 2 furlongs

The Betfair showed he can cope with a big field and helped him get more settled behind horses. He was relatively near the front end and his pace will help get out of a pocket

His jumping is not good enough yet to run in a champion hurdle it's very awkward at times if you watch all of his hurdle starts you'll see this, on his first run against Taquin he demolishes one without even realising it. At the business end Hurricane fly and co are going to be winging hurdles, I'd be worried in the champion hurdle at that stage.

Yes, that's the flipside of the argument.

It is important to do the right thing for the horse (ie. a novice should be kept to novice company).
If the unthinkable should happen in his novice campaign at least you console yourself that you did the right thing.

Attempting to "strike while the iron is hot" is to the detriment of the horses long term well-being. MTOY needs to improve his jumping before he takes his chance at the top level and he will get the required experience this season before being targeted at races like the Champion Hurdle.

If he's good enough then run him, the supreme will have similar exertions put upon him, after the two races have been run there will be a split screen put up by RUK no doubt pointing out how at some points of the two races the supreme field were going quicker!!, the battle hardened thing!!, if he's simply better than the rest, that might not even matter....people talk about the prospect of him running in the CH as if it's consigning him to his doom, it's a competitive horse race much like the other one where for certain he will be a better horse than certainly most of the field.

Another thing to consider is the trainers championship, we've had much talk of nicholl's trying to feather his own bed on this issue, well, if grandouet doesn't look like he'll be able to provide a strong challenge, then MTOY'S it may be decided could provide Hendo with a viable alternative.

Hendo pretty much said he runs in the Supreme if he can be believed on ruk

duffy I can accept that the supreme will place similar exertions on him and from an objective perprective don't have an issue as such with the horse running.

But for you information races tend to be won at the end of the race and that's where the experience of 'battle hardened' horses will count, especially if a rival has been too keen during the race. Against other novices with similar experience this may have less effect.

Don't get wrong if he's a confirmed runner I'd be playing him at 13 on here, that's a fantastic price. That's why with that price still being 5 points bigger than the nearest book I don't think the price relates to being any decision being reached - more likely those with a price taking a quick profit or having a cover position

I wouldn't expect him to say any different tbh, perhaps jp hasn't gotten enough on jezki yetGrin hoping that MTOY's runs in the champion, those comments would be par for the course and the market is over-reacting.

Presumably everyone who likes to take Henderson at face value are rushing out to back Binocular?

Nicky Henderson all but ruled out supplementing exciting Betfair Hurdle winner My Tent Or Yours for the Champion Hurdle on Friday.

The six-year-old turned the Newbury race into a procession on Saturday and is as short as 7-2 with Coral to win the Champion Hurdle.

The Seven Barrows handler had a long telephone discussion yesterday with owner JP McManus, who is in America, and Henderson highlighted that time is on the horse’s side.

“I would have thought the obvious route was the Supreme,” Henderson told Racing UK. “Novices have won the Champion Hurdle before. I think we will take the recognised path and I would have thought that if he was that good he can win the Champion Hurdle some other day.”

My Tent Or Yours is a best-priced 2-1 for the Supreme.

McManus and Henderson lost Darlan in action at Doncaster last week, but the Irish owner also has Binocular, the 2010 Champion hurdler, entered in the feature race on the opening day of the Festival next month.

“Sadly you have to look at it in the context that we haven’t got Darlan but remember we have Binocular,” Henderson added. “He will work tomorrow, and I changed my mind nearly three times about going to Wincanton.

“I’d rather he enjoyed everything. He jumped four hurdles this morning and was electric. He gets forgotten about sometimes.”

He also said that they must keep an open mind about it though.

You could argue as to why don't they categorically rule out the champion hurdle then, what's stopping them from definitely committing him to the supreme now?
By:
Graeme83
When: 15 Feb 13 16:55
What is ruling them out is Grandouet. He is the big chance in the Champion Hurdle, tent or no tent.
By:

When: 15 Feb 13 17:18
I agree graham, so my real point is that the inexperience and the too soon tag isn't the issue at all about having a horse in there with a chance.
By:

Inexperience comes into  play, as done ethics given what happened to Darlan. The Supreme is an easier race. A horse that lacks experience is more likely to make an error against horses who are pinging them at speed. Take a look at Hurricane fly last time. By the way, i think MTOY isn't a stick on for the novices race anyway. He might not get that sort of ground, and i very much doubt he will egt that sort of pace.

If Binocular shows them he's as good as he was in last years champion Mtoy will go for the supreme. If Bino is not enjoying himself and shows them nothing... wait for the Bino out for season, tent supplemented.

The reason they don't rule anything out is that it would be crazy to do so! Why put yourself into a corner before you have to?

Imagine if Hurricane Fly gets injured in the next few days. That's a reason to keep the Champion as a possibility. It might even be a reason to supplement him (how much is it?) knowing full well that he goes for the Supreme unless something silly happens in the build-up to the Champion.
