To a large extent Saturday revolves around the running of Forpadydeplasterer. He has twice come up against Big Zeb this season first getting beat 2 1/2L getting 8LB and then being beat 6L off levels. If he wins then we all know where we stand regarding the QM. However if he runs his race and he usually does and gets beat 6/8L we all have a conundrum. Al Ferof, Finians Rainbow and Wishful Thinking will then know where to go in March. I suspect Arkle, QM and Ryanair after Saturday.

This year's 2 mile novice chasers look a vintage crop - at least 4 already rated 155 or better and on a progressive curve. I believe AF could go very close on Saturday. My one reservation would be that his best form is going left handed but maybe he just a bit below par last time at Sandown. I'll be a watcher, not a player!

The thing is now with AF, after reading PN's comments on RP site, it sounds like they are actually going to try and win the race proper, which for me is not what you would want for a novice against horse of this calibre.
When PN made the entry I thought they would simply go for a hunt round and hope to finish in the first 3 or 4 and pick up more prize money, plus the experience, than you would get in a novice chase. But now it sounds like they are actually going to go full tilt ? Based on the form line with Ghizao ?? Not being funny like but even Stevie Wonder could see Finians left his guts behind at Cheltenham in the Arkle. He gave everything in that race. |
By:
Conclusion .. PN is talking puff in the Paper and this race IS a prep. Dont be fooled imo.
That's how I am reading it anyway, bluff, double bluff etc. |
By:
I have to say that PFN will be going there to win with Al Ferof. This years novices look as good as last years and as yet we have nothing to compare last years crop with regarding the established stars. It may well be that Al Ferof is simply better!
By:
I think they will be going to win, and even if he has a hard race, he has 8 weeks to be spot on for the Arkle. A tough race will do him the world of good anyway. SS is very unlikely to be battle hardened this March.
I think its a really good decision by PN myself and this represents a really good stepping stone. |
By:
Well if AF has the gun put to his head against these horse, and if in fact he goes on and wins the race, then i'd see that as a negative for his chances in March. Backward thinking I know, but as someone has mentioned previously, AF is running because of the injuries to Tataniano and Master Minded, so if they are trying to win, it means his target has been changed mid-season.
By:
If he wins the VC, must be every possibility he swerves SS in the Arkle.
By:
But everything shouldnt be purely about Cheltenham imo Sint. This is a Grade 1 race in its own right, and far from a vintage renewal. If they can win it tomorrow, then well done all involved imo.
And I happen to think the horse is pretty tough. I dont think a tough race will bother him or his chances in the Arkle. I think that if PN felts it would, he wouldnt be running him |
By:
You dont believe PN and what he says then s&c?
Even if he wins this pretty well, after reading what he said, I'm pretty confident he will go for the Arkle. |
By:
I don't believe anything trainers or jockeys say, CCM

By:
I think its also worth remembering the horse is a 7yo with 11 runs under rules.
SS is a 6yo with only 8 runs under rules. If he is to run in the VC next year, it would probably be as a 7yo with 11 runs under his belt, albeit a litttle more chasing experience. |
By:
Never a bad tactic s&c! And I'd be inclined to agree with you. But I think PN is pretty honest with his more high profile runners.
By:
He'll be pretty mature physically and has already shown he is tough. 8 weeks is plenty enough time to get condition back on him for Cheltenham. He's not in for a school round, that's for sure.
By:
None of us know the exact reasoning behind running in the race, but to say its only cos others are injured is a complete guess.
We are talking about the top chase trainer we have had in recent years,he knows what is good for the horse, and where an Arkle runner needs to be on the day. As an AF backer,i have every faith that connections know what they are doing. Hes ready for a run, and win or not,the race will help him to be spot on in March for the Arkle. QM is only a consideration should one or both the Irish fail to turn up,as he has stated. And Catch me is spot on,hes tough alright. |
By:
S&C,
Why avoid SS whose had 2 chases, and take on the proven best 2 milers of the last 2 or 3 years?? Beating the VC field is nothing compared to beating BZ and SE imo,and Nicholls knows that. |
By:
Beating the VC field is nothing compared to beating BZ and SE imo,and Nicholls knows that.
Thats the key point for me too Budd. Just because there are some experienced Chasers in this race, doesnt mean its comnparable to the QM and the two best 2 milers about. |
By:
You would say that as an Af backer though wouldn't you Budde.
It is not a complete guess in the slightest. It is an educated guess based on mitigating circumstances. Put it this way, do you think Af would be running here if Master Minded and Tataniano were fit ?? I think we know the answer to that one so stop talking through your pocket please. |
By:
MM was always going to be stepped up in trip this season wasnt he Sint? I would be surprised if the VC was ever on his agenda.
I dont believe this race is an after thought myself. |
By:
He won it last season CCM and is/was unbeaten right handed prior to the King George.
By:
I know that mate, but still not sure this race would have been pencilled in for the horse when they mapped out his season. Unless as a back up if they decided he didnt stay in the KG and would be campaigned back at 2m after that.
By:
Alright an educated guess if yer like, but still you dont know.None of us do.
I think its because they were looking for a race for him and this one fits in the training plan, and in there opinion looks ok for him as re opposition.really dont think they would run him cos they aint got anything else to run,but thats just opinion like yours. Not sure what the Pocket talking insult is based on Sint, but i would think i am able to offer an opinion without being accused of that. But thats up to you i guess. |
By:
As regards MM,i am as sure as one can be in this game, that the KG was the target followed by the GC or Ryanair, depending on his staying the KG trip or not.
Whether they would have done the VC,not sure, but maybe they would have preferred the Ascot chase over 2m4?or the Aon at Newbury? Who knows!! |

The stars are thinning out at the top of the tree & he is desperate to retain that trainers championship. That is the reason Al Ferof is running in the race. I'm sure he's talked Mr Hales into thinking it's the best idea for the horse but for me I would much rather my Arkle horse had a nice novice race at a stride or two slower. He's not a horse that needs to be running in a VC while still very much learning his way over the larger obstacles. It wasn't all that long ago the trainer was saying this
"I do think he will need this first experience, not fitness-wise but mentally. He is not a big, scopey horse and although we have done loads of schooling he has been a bit novicey. He did fall in a point-to-point before he won one next time out, so although he has done plenty at home, he is bound to be better for the run." Now he has gone on and for me jumped reallyy well in his two novice races but for a horse who was described as novicey I'm not sure why you want to start taking on Finians Rainbow & Wishful Thinking 2 runs later. No matter how you rate them in the Queen Mother both of them especially the former can go off & jump as fast as anything in training. My main hope is that he gets round & runs a decent enough race. |
By:
hes a horse that likes to come off a fast pace.He wont be taking on the front runners, just cant see that at all,but he may try to pick them off at the end.Really depends on how he jumps,if he jumps like he has been i can see him getting into the race late on ok.Ruby will know what to do,no one better at judging a race imo.
MM, Do trainers take the trainers title as serious as that? i know they want to win it but surely not to that extent?,would have thought the relationship with his big owners would be paramount, and would not do anything with one of their horses to jeopardise that. |
By:
Most trainers I would say no not really but PFN has had the title of Champ trainer since the Pipe days and he had to work pretty hard to get it. I just don't think he will be very willing to give it up too easily & the way he has campaigned the likes of Prospect Wells & Al Ferof for me prove this.
By:
Masterminded you are exactly right, his ambitions to be Champion Trainer is going to be at the expense of some his novices being plunged in at the deep endbefore thy are ready.
By:
Given his fierce, extensive criticism of the way Martin Pipe tried to hang on to the trainers' championship it would be deeply hypocritical of PFN to mis-campaign his horses for the same reason. I just don't believe he'd do that.
By:
Lol the proof is there for everyone to see he is campaigning horses differently this season. Don't think it's a coincidence he's taking on Oscar Whisky on trials day either with Big Buck's. He is after the ££££.
By:
Sounds like a very reasonable theory to me Masterminded, the guys ultra competitive , actions speak louder than words and the race is worth more money than winning a Novice chase.
Last year the Champion Chase was worth £182,000 and the Arkle £74,000 to the winner. Henderson is possibly another trainer who is very championship orientated and his statement re Oscar Whiskey "But it is well worth Oscar Whisky taking on Big Buck's as there is a lot of prize money on offer and second in the World Hurdle would be better than third or fourth in a Champion Hurdle." I thought was quite revealing. |
By:
Believe again, Zarkandar in the high prize money Betfair Hurdle Toat Gold Trophy, Al Ferof in the VChandler.
By:
I suggest you lot read Nicholls' book!
By:

Don't think OW is running trials day - going to Welsh Champion Hurdle isn't he? Why not go to the well again with BB? Whilst I agree that TS Trophy would not be ideal race for 1st run of season, could be potentially thrown in and have a quiet race. Next year will be the season for Zarkander. However completely agree re Al Ferof - not the right race so must be after money |
By:
I've read it Strontium and I don't believe he'd ever put money in front of horse safety. But his actions would
suggest he is going after the money as is Henderson, but i don't think their doing anything wrong in doing it. I remember Make a stand running away with the big newbury hurdle under a big weight and then winning a CH.The race used to be a good trial for the CH. Some of what M pipe did in end of season races in pursuit of the championship I think was wrong . |
By:
I dont believe it either Stront.
The tote gold trophy has been won by a novice recently,it can be done without harming the horse,if you have one tough enough with the right mark,Zarkander seems that type to me. Al Ferof is a tough fairly battle hardened novice who imo will be fine running in the VC. But the biggest argument for me is Nicholls himself.Hes no fool and will not jeopardise his relationship with big owners,he cannot afford that kind of reputation in his game. I aint read his book, whats he say Stront? |
By:
Think i need to explain myself a tad, whilst Zarkander is not technically a novice, hes still young and yet to run out of novice company.
By:
Budd - he was extremely critical of the way Martin Pipe behaved when he was trying to hang on to the trainers championship (and Nicholls was trying to win his first). Entering races mob handed, running the horses several times in a week, runnig horses in unsuitable conditions, generally risking horses' welfare to retain the championship. There's also a fabulous quote from a letter someone wrote to Nicholls about Pipe, but I suspect it would break the forum rules to quote it
![]() It's not a great book, especially the bit about his career as a jockey, but the later stuff (his thoughts on his fanmous horses, how he trains, and on winning his first trainers championship) is well worth a read. |
By:
Assumed OW would not be running in Welsh CH & going for Cleeve apologies. Odd prep for the World Hurdle but a nice race to win for the owner.
By:
Well quite. But then he owns the horse and the track so in that sense it's a match made in heaven.
By:
Cheers Sront.
Really dont think he would write all that in his book and then go and do that with his horses. |
