Definitely won to follow, travelled so well and powered up the hill in the Coral Cup.

That mistaken addition will be a G2. This is a G1 horse.

Was not aware of that. What's the point of adding a new race if it's not even a G1 ?!
Anyway, he's not short of speed and you need a bit of extra stamina for the Arkle. |

Carried 6lbs more than GMOOH in the Schweppes and was travelling supremely well before blundering in the straight. His subsequent race suggested he certainly wouldnt have been stopping at Newbury. 33/1 for the Arkle was too big to ignore (this after me posting I wouldnt touch the race this year
 ) - but I will also take the best price I can get for the longer race. Mark Howard on RUK is also a big fan judging by his "10 to Follow" feature yesterday. |

Trouble is there is a fair bit of stamina in his pedigree. I doubt he will but it's not inconceivable he could end up in the RSA.

does form from this race generally turn out well as in do winners go on to become grade 1 horses?

Collier Bay was beaten in this race but came back to win the Champion Hurdle the following year - so it can be done

Both. He was fully expected (by me at least!)to complete the Imperial/Coral Cup double but failed to stay the extra half mile. Put away after that his next season as a 5/6 year old included a win in the AIG Irish Champion before winning a respectable if non-vintage Champion by beating the previous years winner, Alderbrook.

Rather than the Coral Cup if you were to concentrate on horses which have run well in the Schweppes (which I am 99% sure he should have done but for his mistake) you would find any number of "handicappers" who went on to prove themselves at a higher level.

I have no insight at all to the Nick Williams stable, however off 144 he still looks very well treated to me so I would be surprised if they didnt try and take advantage of that mark in something pretty decent. The prize money available for the Haydock fixed brush race might be tempting as even though the extra half mile is an unknown factor if he fails to stay it will hardly screw up his mark for another shot at a big purse. A very nice horse.

According to Nicky Henderson, Spirit River ran over fences in France so his novice status is no longer intact.
There is nothing in his form to confirm this though? |

Entered at Newbury in a novice chase over 2m4f. Henderson got two other Buckley horses entered in the race too.

Runs tomorrow vs Celestial Halo and On Borrowed Wings, big test on debut.
Buckley described him as more of a 'staying type' on RUK today, so not sure about the Arkle. |

Really fancy him tomorrow but not much margin for error when you're backing horses first time over fences particularly against top class horses from the Nicholls' stable. Prefer to take 25-1 for the Arkle.

they will surely be stepping this horse up in trip as the season progresses,id rather back him for rsa not the arkle....what price buckley winning the arkle with fr,new 2.4m with surfing and sr in the rsa?

celestial halo isnt top class anymore .he would be outpaced coming down the hill at chelt,as he always is

Spirit River doesn't lack pace (won over 2 miles at cheltenham and was going well 3 out when kicking a hurdle out in the Tote Gold Trophy) and was rated 10lbs higher than Finian's Rainbow over hurdles. It generally takes a horse rated over 142 over hurdles to win an Arkle. The RSA Chase is surely a race for sloggers and I'd think the stable would swerve the race with it's better horses after last year's race.

A bit premature to write of Celestial Halo, bar a fall he may had one the aintre hurdle.
Shame the owner has so many good horses as Spirit River is more of a 2miler than a 3 miler anyday of the week, i hope they dont end up ruining him. Maybe they should had spent another year hurdling....... |

I agree about Celestial Halo and he should probably be more suited to a longer trip given his flat form and that Triumph Hurdle winners have more often proved to be stayers. Just not sure about his attitude a couple of times last year and not sure he's progressive.

The way the owner is talking SR will not be campaigned over 2m.

Spirit River entered in 2m and a half race,which,in the past trainer has ran the likes of Punchestowns and Bacchanal,both of which were best at 3m.Plus the owner is saying he is a stayer.Plus he won the Coral Cup over 2m 5.All points to a staying campaign,and imo be very careful if thinking about punting for the Arkle.
