$1500 for a car that cost $130000 in 1988. You could buy a house in a reasonable suburb for that back then. Obviously it needs a respray. And the interior is a bit tatty. Mechanically excellent. That Merc straight six is bulletproof. Transmission smooth and suspension and brakes fine. I reckon a new valve cover gasket to stop the oil leak and will have no trouble getting a blue slip.

It's a shame about the paint. Would've been a beautiful colour in it's day. The sides have come up nice after a wash.

Thanks for the thread TKDM its really interesting I have been a Jag perv for years , not knowing anything about mechanics never had the guts to dive in and purcahse one with the local workshop charging $110 p.h but I have wanted one since my first ride in one, maybe one day.

Cheers mibalsmis. You can find out how to do virtually anything on the net. There's no way I'm paying a dealership $450 for a service which is basically a long list of things they've checked plus an oil change. Older cars and I don't mean real old ones but say pre 2000 depending on the make you can do nearly all the work yourself. Save a fortune and it's enjoyable. Wouldn't want to do it as a job though!
If you're thinking of an old Jag and you don't want to turn a spanner too often try and get a good one. I've learnt the saying - there's nothing more expensive than a cheap Jaguar. Fortunately very good 70s XJ saloons can be had for less than 10k. Keep it for a year then try something else. |

I had no idea you were in a relationship. You just don't seem relationship material. Hanging around the Forum on a weekend when you should be doing relationship sh1t is not a good idea. Unless you were dating Teen Queen. Or Live in Hope. They wouldn't mind.

Bought a sh1tload from Auto One today for the Mercedes Coupe. I sent them an email with a list and asked what price they could do me. Surprisingly they were better than what I found on ebay except on one item. I said let's do it. A day later and it's all there. I've got to go there anyway to buy fluids so it's too easy. Better than getting six deliveries spread over the next two weeks from various suppliers on ebay.
Oil Filter Air Filter Fuel Filter Trans Filter and gasket Thermostat and gasket Valve Cover gasket Exhaust manifold gaskets. Spark Plugs. So I've got some work ahead of me. Changed the spark plugs this arvo. Very easy access. A delight. Tomorrow I might tackle coolant and oil change and the various problems that poses. I wouldn't mind but I'm renovating the house atm so have very little time to spend on old cars. Anyway I'll report back. |

Sometimes I look on this thread to remind myself what the red/maroon coloured Jaguar that I've owned since November looks like. I'll have to get over there some day. I took the brake master cylinder in to Cathouse Spares to get reconditioned. That was a while ago.

Got a little bit done today. First up I discovered the Merc had a flat battery. Like any authentic Malteser I had another one under the house. No ringing NRMA like a little debutant around here. Anyway I'm onto the cooling system. I drain out the old coolant and can see it's OLD. Remove the thermostat housing because it looks sh1t. Put the hose in and flush out more old coolant. Paint the thermostat housing with some stainless steel paint and clean every single thing I can get access to. Put in the new thermostat and gasket. That's about it. Had to get up to the BOOZATORIUM so I'll do some more tomorrow.

I haven't touched the Jag in months. Bit of leather balm on the seats occasionally.
Today I put the new coolant in the Merc. Then I went to change the oil but hit a snag. The sump plug was rounded off so the spanner wouldn't grab. Had a look for my vise grips but couldn't find them. Doesn't matter. Tomorrow I'll buy a new sump plug and do the oil change then. I soon found something else to do. The air filter cover looks a bit tatty so took that off to give it a paint. With that off I was able to clean the throttle body and degrease and clean everything I could see. I hate oily engine bays. So that's about it for today. |

henry - wind up windows??? This is a 1988 Mercedes Coupe. It doesn't have wind up windows. This cost the equivalent of a quarter of a mill in todays money. If only they had an emoticon for INDIGNANT I would be clicking on it right now!!

Slow progress again on Merc this week. Found the vise grips and proceeded to use on rounded off sump plug. No good. Tried stilsons. Tried hammer and chisel just a little then thought fxck it. This thing needs a nut welded to it. I don't have a welder. So I bought a fluid extraction pump off ebay for $27. I've been meaning to get one anyway. It's a small electric pump runs on 12V. You stick the hose down the dipstick into the sump and the hose at the other end into a container. Switch it on and it drains your sump for you. It's pretty slow but there's things to do while you wait. In my case I had to remove the rocker cover. A straightforward job on the Merc. No annoying fuel injection manifold on top. Just 8 bolts and a breather hose and it's off. I'll clean it up and paint it. Changed the oil filter. Very easy, access from the top.

TOP TIP for all car restorers. If you've got a spray can of engine enamel in one hand and a beer in the other just stop and think before deciding which one to shake!!

Finally changed the oil the other day. I painted the rocker cover which was an absolute nightmare. I'd previously painted the air filter housing. Both jobs really needed to be done. With the valve cover off I took the opportunity to indulge in some more cleaning. While there I noticed the crankcase breather hose was leaking oil so I figured I'd replace the crappy clamp with a proper hose clamp,a jubilee clamp. Anyway this hose is 28 years old and brittle and my attempts to remove the clamp resulted in the end of the hose breaking off. Had to go to the Mercedes dealer to get a new one for $20. Anyway finally got the newly painted rocker cover back on complete with brand new thick rubber gasket. Oil filter screws in from the top. Then the freshly painted air filter housing replete with brand new air filter. Opened the door to the coupe,Tommy laboriously climbed in followed by me. Turned the key and it fired up immediately. Smooth. Went for a a quick back street drive to check for leaks. It's a lovely ride in this old thing. Nothing like a Holden V8 Ute!! Anyway no leaks!! Result.
