That's the water pump back on. Also put on the alternator and belt. Note the engine bay is now nice and black instead of horrendous old flaking faded yellow.

That's the RHS of the bay. New paint including brake booster. I've removed the brake master cylinder it was leaking so I'll give to Cathouse to recondition. Note exhaust manifolds painted in high temp paint.

That's LHS of the bay. Water rail and exhaust heat shield back on. Cam cover has been removed.

Cam covers are in a sorry state. You can hardly see them once the injector manifolds are back on.

I think I spend about 80% of my time with this car looking for stuff. Two hours,on and off, looking for two bolts that hold the exhaust heat shield on. Finally remembered where I put them but in the meantime I left the washers out and with all the rain we've been having they've gone a bit rusty. Putting this engine bay back together is going to be a whole lot harder than pulling it apart and that wasn't easy. I need to get different engine enamel. Been using Rustoleum gloss black on the cam cover. It looks more like patchy dull grey.
Progress has slowed to a crawl. Decided to give myself some motivation. Sat in the drivers seat and had a beer while I admired the beautiful interior and imagined how good the car will be when it's finished. Then leather balmed the seat. It's done the trick. Can't wait to get cracking!! |

Water rails and cam covers have held me up for a couple of months. Removing and painting the cam covers I thought would be easy but I couldn't have been more wrong. I don't know why but getting a nice paint job on the aluminium covers has been a nightmare.
I was going to go with the original steel water rails I removed the rust and repainted them and then thought, you know what? Get the stainless steel pipes on now while it's all disassembled. What's a few more dollars? I've already forgotten about it. On advice from a Jag website I've replaced the cam cover bolts. The young bloke at Lee Bros Engineering suggested I go with brass washers that go nicely with the stainless steel bolts and black cam covers. Not sure if you can see that on the photos. Also had to get new bolts for the water rails because I have removed the skyhooks for lifting the engine. I will keep that stuff for the next owner. ![]() |

I was going to get rid of the air conditioning but I've had a change of heart. I want the car to be right and if that means a working air con then it's just got to be done. I'm wondering if the reason the AC belt was off was not because of a problem with the air con compressor but a problem with the air pump. Air pump is a 1970s emission control bullsh1t.

It's awkward to handle. Weighs over 10kg and has hoses going everywhere.

I hope you do a better job on this Jag than you done on that cupboard door.

I don't fix cupboard doors. That thing is antique probably worth more than the rathole you live in. Cricket bat is in case of home invasion. Not that there's any home invasions in my 'burb. Rather have a 410 Mossberg shotgun but leftie loonies like Bigted don't like anyone to own guns. They'd rather good people get murdered and raped and then let the PERPS off scot free.

I've decided to put the air con back on. Might as well do the job properly. There was no aircon belt on the car so I assumed the aircon wasn't working. That may not be the case. The aircon belt also goes around the air pump. The air pump is something that bolts onto the side of the motor and is part of the 1970s emission control. Apparently when the car is cold it pumps exhaust back into the engine rather than the atmosphere or something like that and is just a load of bollocks basically. It's unlikely any Jag in the world has one of these things still operating. Anyway I thought I might put the air pump back on just to use as an idler pulley for the aircon belt. Then I noticed that it is in fact totally seized up! Maybe that is why there is no aircon belt. The aircon might be fine. You cannot un-seize this pump so I have to wait to get an idler pulley. More down time.
Btw here is a tip for anyone buying a second hand car. I often see in adverts 'Air conditioning not working just needs re-gassing'. My response is bullsh1t. If it just needed re-gassing then the seller would get it re-gassed.Aircon repair can be expensive. If you want aircon then do some google research to find out how much to fix it and factor that in to the price for the car. |
