I'm guessing these IS, ISIS, ISIL scumbags must have tens of millions in their ranks for the response they are generating around their barbaric ideas and behaviours?

Or is the west just talking up the problem, once again, to scare the wider population and justify yet another war??

In a pure co-incidence the soon to depart head of ASIO is talking about lifting the terror threat, Obama is about to announce all sorts of action with a new "coalition of the killing" oops willing and the Queensland Police and AFP arrest a couple of suspects in Brisbane.

The plan, soon to be announced, appears to be to provide training and weapons to all the different groups in Iraq and the "freedom fighters" in Syria - all of which I'd suggest will end, based on previous experience, very well CrazyCrazyCrazy

Overall, yes these guys are nutters and we should do something to protect the people they are killing BUT stepping up the action as discussed will only achieve 2 things

1 - make us a bigger target for extremists

2 - come back and bite us on the butt next time the situation over there changes

Massive mistakes are about to be made and all to crack a peanut with a sledgehammer

Thoughts?

war is hell ... every story from historical times to now paints the same picture

in WW2 Chamberlain in the UK wanted to avoid direct conflict and thought he might appease a threat by allowing it to make a small incursion ... and ceded Czechoslovakia to the nazis

didn't work .. and when poland followed and was invaded ... WWII began in earnest

so for Oz ... we are linked militarily with the USA ... who seem ready to extend ... and therefore sadly we are in it

no-one really 'wins' with wars ... and civilians always lose ... Sad

The Americans funded and armed the rebels that have now become ISIS and they now provide a convenient
excuse to further the geopolitical ambitions of neoconservatives with  eyes on establishing a " new world order"
in the middle east. This would involve taking over and controlling the  rogue states of Iran , Syria and Lebanon as well the grand prize of Russia. To answer your question Wombleoz ,the biggest winners from a war to achieve the above will be
those that control the  economies of the Western world and the miltary industrial complex , war is great for business.

spot on hi jinkser. The dopey psycho's all over the world, whatever religion, don't realise they are just an ongoing market for the arms industry and dealers. You want an ak47 baby, how about our latest rocket launcher, we've got some excellent new mortars that you just have to have , blah blah balh..... I can't find the speech i need to paste here, american president deciding to arm the US for WW11, said this is a "no turning back" situation for a future where war is now going to be an "industry" that the western world will never be able to make redundant. One of the greatest speeches you will ever hear... aaaandd i cant' fkn remember where it is........... damn it, i've been involved with a wildcat all morning..... my brain is totally mash atm.. will FIND it later.

Lost my father to the Vietnam War so I don't take the decision to go to war lightly, but of all the past wars the pending one against the scum of the Earth that calls themselves IS I give 100% support. Happy for all my tax dollars to support it. These no morals bottom feeders must be stopped

War... Huh... Yeah!
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Uhuh... uhuh...!

War... Huh... Yeah!
What it is good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Say it again y'all
War... Huh... Look out!
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Listen to me - AAH!
War I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears in thousands of mothers' eyes
When their sons go out to fight and lose their lives

I said:
War... Huh... Good God y'all!
What it is good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Say it again
(War... Huh!) Lord, Lord, Lord...
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Listen to me:

(War) It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
(War) Friend only to the undertaker
War is the enemy of all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest within the younger generations
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die?

AAH! War... Huh... Good God y'all!
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Say it, say it, say it!
War... Huh...! (Uhuh... Yeah... Huh!)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Listen to me:

(War) It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
(War) Got one friend, thats the undertaker
War has shattered many young men's dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is but too surely precious, to spend fighting wars each day
War can't give life, it can only take it away!

AAH! War... Huh... Good God y'all!
What it is a good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Say it again
War... Huh... Lord, Lord, Lord...
What it is a good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Listen to me:

(War) It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
(War) Friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding tell me,
is there a place for these today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom,
but Lord knows there's got to be a better way

War... Huh... Good God y'all!
What is it good for?
You tell me!
Say it, say it, say it, say it!
War... Good God now... Huh!
What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it! (Nothing!)

God save us from religious fanatics of all persuasion, they're responsible for more death, destruction and misery than any other single cause or those who use religion as means to achieve their ends but who are in reality only interested in power remember the ultra expensive watch the so called ultra religious ISIS leader was caught out wearing, it's about power and they use religious fervour to enlist the ignorant and feeble minded.

it's hard to say what the answer is but I'd lean towards letting the locals, those in the region, work it out

everyone that has posted about the industry of war are spot on - war, what is it good for? profits for some of the biggest companies in the world Sad

wait and see how it all unfolds and hope not too many innocent people get killed

The coalition of the willing is whatever it was called have a responsibility that after invading and deposing the leadership of a sovereign nation that the nation in question isn't instantly taken over by crazy people. It may take a little more than cutting finances, and if it does, the Iraqis can't be abandoned. Abu Ghraib was a massive win for Al Qaeda as a propaganda tool, what will having ISIL is charge of Iraq do fo them?

I don't know what the answer is, haven't a clue. but Iraq can't be abandoned by the West now.

On another topic, sort of ... I noticed the Russians tested a nuclear bomb the other day. I wonder why they did that. I wonder if they've got a nasty surprise for someone. Maybe some annoying inconsequential little country downunder with a War Pig Prime Minister who's been itching for a blue for some time now.

So, a Russian War Pig and an Australia War Pig walked into a gay bar ...

By:

When: 12 Sep 14 01:17
yes Russia did Phil ... something globally will 'blow' you'd reckon within the next 20 years

... and change the world (again) forever

http://news.yahoo.com/putin-weapons-counter-threats-russia-132247477.html

Russia will counter military moves by the U.S. and NATO with an array of new nuclear and conventional weapons, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday as the military successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine.

---

add to this that russia and china have recently signed a multi-billion dollar deal to run a new gas pipeline between the countries

https://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/russia-breaks-ground-gas-pipeline-075311200.html

and that the USA/Japan and China are at loggerheads over the South & (now) east China seas claims

---

plus the BRICS economic alliance where the B stands for Brazil (who have sh!tloads of COAL to exchange for other China/Russia goodies) ... and pretty much we see a huge split between the "EU/UK and USA" dominated economic markets

it's on imo ... just a matter of time

we sit with yanks and have done since Vietnam

and the NATO (yes North fkn Atlantic) alliance was recently strengthened

NATO summit: Australia strengthens ties with Atlantic alliance, but strains of global policing starting to show

Yes, we should kill anybody with different ideals than us, because it is wrong of them to kill others with different ideals than them, and of course we are right and they are wrong so it is all justified.

we're in this sh!tfight because of NATO (yep North Atlantic treaty)

so ... NATO

---

Australians have also served on NATO-led missions in Bosnia, and with NATO's counter-piracy task force patrolling off the coast of Somalia.

Today NATO has 28 member nations and Australia is one of the organisation's 41 "partner" countries.

It's a long way from the shores of Canberra's Lake Burley Griffin to the North Atlantic, but there has been strong support from both sides of Australian politics to strengthen diplomatic and military ties with the alliance.

Labor prime ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard both attended NATO summits.   In 2012 former Coalition defence minister Brendan Nelson was appointed by Labor to be Australia's first ambassador to NATO.
