This may surprised you Jez but I actually supported sending the troops into Afghanistan, we couldn't just sit back and do nothing after 9/11 BUT there had to be a better plan and an end game, we can't just stay there forever - that time has come The Greens are a pretty sensible bunch overall and we'll get better policy as a result of them being there. I am in favour of all those things you mentioned Jez - Euthanasia, Same sex marriage and a carbon tax - times are good  |

(ABC News: Tim Leslie) Greens Leader Bob Brown has confirmed Sarah Hanson-Young unsuccessfully challenged fellow Senator Christine Milne for the deputy-leadership of the party. Rumours emerged today that there had been a challenge for the position by Senator Hanson-Young when the Greens met in August after the election. Confirming the speculation today Senator Brown would not say what the vote count was, but said Senator Milne won by a "clear majority". "Christine Milne's doing a great job there," he said. And he said he was not challenged for the leadership but encourages anyone to challenge for "every party position". "I continue to do that," he said. "No position is safe". Senator Brown was pressed by reporters over why the challenge was not revealed earlier but said he would have told anyone who asked him. He dismissed any comparison of recent events within the party to the decline of the Democrats as "nonsensical". In a statement released later today Senator Hanson-Young says Senator Brown and Senator Milne have her full support. "We are a small party room and we discuss these issues in a mature fashion," she said. Senator Milne, 57, from Tasmania, has been in federal Parliament since 2004 and was elected to the position of deputy in 2008. Senator Hanson Young, 28, is from South Australia and was elected to the Senate in 2007. |

I would like to see the debate for those 3 big-ticket items pursued Wombleoz - it will leave the government in a terminal position.
Your opinion along with the extreme left's Wombleoz, and I know this will come as a shock - does NOT dominate popular opinion its not what the majority want. Was fantastic to watch one of Australia's greatest Prime Ministers on Q&A last night. Of course past actions and policies of governments will cause divides in our community. But we are lucky enough to be in the financial position as a country due to the conservative fiscal planning carried out by the Liberal government while they were in power. And David Hicks, you're a traitor. Got off lightly if you ask me. |

as to the first post, every party has leadership challenges, as you well know and as to debating the 3 issues discussed you might be surprised - polls usually show a solid majority in favour of euthanasia and gay marriage, carbon tax will take a bit more selling |

John Howard's claim that he would have resigned in 2007 if only Costello hadn't annoyed him so much is clearly a lie.
Under the Westminster system of government when a prime minister loses the confidence of his own colleagues he is expected to voluntarily hand over the baton and if he does not do so, it is the responsibility of his colleagues to force him to do so. The weakness of the Liberal Party was obvious when they failed to do so, confirming Howard in the view he clearly held: that his position as prime minister was analogous to that of a monarch. Only a constitutional monarch may continue as head of state,nothwithstanding extreme unpopularity, until death or abdication. Howard was not a monarch, as the electorate of Bennelong proved in bringing about his political death. The fact that time has apparently not resulted in any form of responsible reflection on the part of Howard speak volumes for the man's personality and the wisdom of his former electorate. |

I believe the Coalition is strong Judgey - and full of a wide range of people from all walks of life - and under solid, genuine and real leadership from Tony Abbott.
Australia needs strong, fiscally & socially conservative and responsible government with real leadership. The last 3 years shows us what Labor have learnt from 11 and half years in Opposition.  Shambolic, chaotic and scandal-ridden government with waste, debt and spin the greatest of priorities. [>o][:o] Now we have the looney Greens with some power (and the posturing within that party has begun) within the Parliament and driving government direction - the public won't have a bar of it (the extreme left lurch) and before long and this will end in tears for all concerned. Be assured though, the Coalition stand ready to govern.........  |

Though I will say, the Libs must be careful when considering preferencing the Greens.
Whilst I consider Labor as the major opponent. The Greens are an utter and complete enemy. They are extreme. Case in point - Lee Rhiannon. Read some of the material this piece of work has distributed/promoted as a NSW MP. ..... As John Howard mentioned earlier in the week and I agree with him, whilst I always support the election of Liberal Governments, I'd much prefer a Labor Government (with majority) than the current situation (as much as it pains me to say). |
