Well I was 2 minutes away from a really good profit when Leyton Orient scored in the 88th minute! Bang went the Double and the correct score. Still I managed to bag a profit of +£72.50 for the AJAX 1-0 result (£5@15.5), so all was not lost.

My other disappointments last week included FULHAM v CHELSEA, WALKON - unplaced, MEGASTAR - unplaced, and a couple of losing 50/50 bets, so my priority this week is to recover the net £73.69 I lost due to those results.

As I mentioned yesterday, correct score Football bets are a great way to get some leveraged returns and I'll be making these a regular feature of my campaign. One of my favourite bets is to find three teams for reasonable Home win prospects and then back them all to win 1-0, 2-0, 2-1. If you then write "Perm 27 x £1 Trebles for a correct score winning treble = £27" you have a bet with the potential to provide a profit of well over £400 for a £27 stake!

Tonight I have backed WEST HAM to win the match against BURNLEY, plus four correct score results of 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 & 3-1. I got odds of 8/1, 9/1, 8/1 and 16/1 respectively so hopefully one of them will come in.

Only one winner out of my three 50/50 bets as I call them with RIVERSIDE THEATRE providing the win. I also had a win on the Football but made a small net loss on the day. However, this week has been a week of 'small losses' and of course they all add up so I have applied some leverage to my bets today in the hope of finishing the week on a high.

I have backed MAN CITY to win their match against Notts County 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 and also ARSENAL to win their match 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 and in Holland AJAX to win their match 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, plus a double on ARSENAL and AJAX to win. I staked £5 on each of the correct score bets and £25 on the Double.

If I get a couple of those correct score bets coming in it will make a big difference to my results for the week as the lowest is at 5/1 and the best at 10/1. Otherwise I will have taken a step back, which is bound to happen sometimes, but I am hoping my 'leverage' strategy pays off today.

Some excellent horse racing in prospect this afternoon but I am going to 'hedge my bets' and back two horses in each of the races I am interested in today for a greater probability of success and an overall profit.

Ascot 1.20 I have backed TORNADO BOB and PROBLEMA TIC at 2.78 & 3.6 respectively. Ascot 3.00 I have backed RIVERSIDE THEATRE and PRIDEOFDULCOTE at 2.78 & 3.6 respectively. And Haydock 2.45 I have backed BENSALEM and ANYGIVENDAY at 2.92 & 3.2 respectively.

All of racing is about 'opinions' and Murphy's law states that if I were to pick just one horse in each of those races it would be the wrong one! So I am going with the market and backing the two most financially supported horses in each of them in the hope that other people know far more than I do and that they'll be right!

My maximum risk on each of these races is 2% and my stake is 1% on each horse and I'll be hoping that the second favourites win for the bigger profits.

Oscar Wilde said that and some days it is very, very hard to resist temptation. Unfortunately my little horse racing system has thrown up a rare 'blank' day today, although I see there are several excellent opportunities for the little strategy I told you about with Laying and then Backing the Draw in the Football matches this evening.

By the way - how about that Arsenal result yesterday! Well done to Arsenal and no harm done to the bank due to my 'saver' on them which I mentioned yesterday.

Well HOME ran no sort of race yesterday. Having previously won five out of six races at Southwell. In the RacingPost Results page it says "ran as though something was amiss this time". Small consolation for the seven punters who lumped on £600 each!

Well done to Tottenham last night winning 1-0 away from Home. A C Milan were warm favourites to win that match and it is a typical example of a 'shock' result.

A good strategy to avoid such 'shock' losses is to back both teams to win when the odds allow it. For example in the match ARSENAL v BARCELONA tonight I have staked 2% (£24 relative to my bank) on BARCELONA to win at 1.93 and then covered that stake with a stake of £7.50 on ARSENAL to win at 4.2 . So if BARCA win my net gain is +£14.82, if the 'shock' result happens and ARSENAL win I get the losing stake on BARCA back and the only way I can lose is if the match ends in a Draw, which could happen of course, but then my total exposure is only c.2.5% But at least I have covered two of the three possible outcomes and a 'shock' result won't hurt me!

FULHAM 0 CHELSEA 0 - Who'd a thunk it? Statistically only 5% of premier league games end in 'Bore Draws' and that was one of them. For Layers and Backers of Draws these are our worst case scenario and - as the title of my subject says 'Knowing when to quit' is vital to limit or reduce your liability in these matches. My strategy is to close my liability down at 76th minute if no goals have been scored by the end of the 75th. This means you take a 'hit' but it's much better than suffering the full original liablilty. For example, yesterday my full liability was 5% but by closing the bet down by backing the draw to cover that I only ended up losing 3%, not so bad.

Today my little horseracing system says HOME in the 4.50 at SOUTHWELL has a good probability of success and I have staked 2% to Win. Plus I am currently checking out an interesting Football strategy which could pay off 'Big Time'- I'll keep you posted on that.

If you have consistent growth then your original sum of money can become anything you desire it to be and the amount it eventually becomes only depends upon the rate of growth over time. The trick of course is achieving that 'consistent growth' which is something which many find difficult to achieve.

Just worked out that I am currently averaging 3.20% per week, which is OK but you need to average 5% per week to turn £1,000 into £1Million in three years, so I need to 'up the Ante' a bit. Although I did say in my first Blog entry that my aim is to achieve it in four years, I am going to give it my best shot to do it in three and if I do only turn £1000 into a £Million in four years I won't beat myself up about it!

My average 3.2% growth has been achieved using a very cautious 1% base stake, so if I had been staking at 2% I would have achieved 6.4% average and been nicely on track. So from today I have increased my base stake to 2%. My 5% compounding target for this week is £60. The club bank should be at £1,392 on Monday 7th March in three weeks time if I am on track, so we'll see what happens.

Today my little horseracing system tells me not to get involved, although I am sorely tempted, but it's best to stick to the rules. I have had a 2% (£24 relative to the bank) Win bet on FENERBAHCE to win their match at Home this evening against Kayserispor in the Turkish Super League, kick-off at 6pm. Odds were 1.51. And in the match FULHAM v CHELSEA I don't think it will be a 'Bore Draw' so I'll be laying The Draw and then backing the Draw when a goal is scored.

My maximum risk for lay bets is 5% so my Lay stake needs to be no more than £20 at 3.9.

an excellent result with LITTLE HERCULES and SWEET IRONY providing the profits yesterday. Although you can see why Stop At A Winner bets can be a bit of a sweat when you have to wait for the last race in the sequence for your win!

I have invested 7% on horseracing today with six 1% Win Singles and a 1% Place bet. All very cautious stuff but the objective, as ever, is to make an overall profit on the day.

One of my favourite bets is where you back two horses in one race. I call this bet a 50/50 as you can split your normal stake or put a point on each. You need a favourite at odds of evens or better and the Second Favourite at 2/1 or better with a nice big gap in the betting to the rest of the field. When you have this scenario you can back both of them. If the favourite wins you just get your money back but if the second favourite wins you make a good profit. We've all seen second favourites turn over the favourite countless times haven't we - LITTLE HERCULES my winner yesterday is a prime example.

Anyway, there are a couple of good prospects for success with this today in the 1.20 at NEWBURY and the 2.25 at NEWBURY I have backed KID CASSIDY, AL FEROF, RIVERSIDE THEATRE and WHAT A FRIEND.

Yesterday I gave SILVER DOLLARS as a Place bet for my club and the horse ran no sort of race. Ironically my little system had picked out five other horses which I didn't give out and they all won! And my Betfair account will show that I had wins with GOLDEN SWORD at Meydan, CORK ALL STAR at Huntingdon and STANLEY RIGBY at Southwell.

Today I noticed that Brian Hughes has some excellent rides at MUSSELBURGH and in the first four races on the card he is on three favourites and one second favourite. I have backed these in a Stop At A Winner format in the ratio 0.5%, 1%, 1.11%, & 2.23%. Total outlay 4.84%. The horse are KINGDOM OF MUNSTER, SITTING TENANT, STORMY WEATHER and LITTLE HERCULES. I only need one of them to win to make my profit and if it goes down then the most I will lose is 4.84%.

Stop At A Winner bets are an excellent way to make a profit when you have several selections and you don't expect them all to win, as you only need one of them to win to make a profit. I once had 100 consecutive winning bets with this method. The only thing is that the cost escalates with the number of selections, so it can be an expensive 'Hit' if you don't win, which is why nowadays when I do them I keep the choice to three or four max.

I have also backed Alan Kings SWEET IRONY for a 2% Place bet in the 2.35 at KEMPTON today and have had five footie bets for tommorrow with MAN UTD, ARSENAL, LIVERPOOL, RANGERS, and AC MILAN all to win their matches.

Hi, what happened to BOTTMAN? Prominent for a long way and then faded right out of it, unbelievable. Also the RacingUk icard Predictor I told you about the other day predicted the winner RISAALA when it was 6/1, (SP 7/2), and annoyingly I didn't back the right horse!   

Still, won one, lost one so no harm done.

I have risked a total of 5% today on three 1% Win bets and a 2% Place bet and this time I have checked each one against the Predictor as a final check so let's hope its right again. My selections for today are HIGH RANSOM in the 1.35 at CARLISLE, KELLS BELLE in the 1.45 at LUDLOW, MONGOOSE ALERT in the 3.00 at LINGFIELD and DREAMOFFORTUNE on the 1.55 at LINGFIELD for the PLACE.

Haven't had time to check out the football yet but there's bound to be some good Lay & Back the Draw prospects.
