Good stuff mad .
I have recently cashed in my 30 year deferred pension .....I also got VR seven years ago. All put aside whilst I still choose to work , if things don't improve I will at least be able to give my son a helping hand. When I first started in IT , it was in the era of punched cards , paper tape , magnetic tape and exchangeable disk drives. I started work at 18 and within 6 months was in charge of a shift on a mainframe computer . I am often asked why I appear so laid back during any crisis at work ......after that responsibility level at such a young inexperienced age anything since has been a breeze. ![]() Watching Heimat again , it is on sky Arts . |

Never heard of yams grown here
They are NZ Yams , also called oka. They grow underground like small potatoes. Can be cooked , but I like them raw. Go outside after frosts and you leave them till the frost totally kills the foliage. They only produce tubers when the nights draw in , pick them earlier and nowt in the ground. |

I did manage to get a biochemistry degree but took me until I was 24 as I left school after A levels and went day release to polytechnic instead of Uni to do HNC then BSc.
I wanted to be paid to do my further education and, coming from a family of market gardeners I didn't feel it was the thing to do to go to Uni and leave my dad and granddad running the farm on their own. Going to local poly meant I was always still around in evenings and at weekends to help, so I went and worked for the local R&D department of a large multinational who paid me to continue my education and further my career. Never left them; worked my whole life for the same company (42 years service) doing interesting and very varied background research work. Being in local employment also meant I was still around at weekends to help on farm and go see LTFC. Plus I married a girl from the next village and that became really handy for free baby sitting eventually, living just a few miles away from both sets of parents. ![]() Resowed all my carrots and put some swede seed down yesterday plus weeded my onion sets. Today I'm planting out some of the dozen or so clematis/honeysuckles/jasmine that I ordered this spring. Still listening to Tom Waits' ballads all the time...must get onto Skynyrd. Watched one of my fav lighthearted films this morning....'That Thing You Do' |

Finally dragged my self away from Tom Waits' songs to listen to Skynyrd.
Ironic that the best song I felt they ever recorded was the cover of J J Cale's 'Call Me The Breeze', one of the few that weren't penned by the band themselves. First album (Pronounced...) still the best (although Simple Man is a duffer). Second album (Second Helping) also a classic |(except for I Need You) Third one (Nuthin Fancy) was pretty good but fourth (Gimme Back My Bullets) much less so. Street Survivors, the fifth and final one (I regard the band as finished after the plane crash) was back up there, almost as good as the first one (but with a much different, more honky-tonk sound). Top ten tracks for me: CMTB, Sweet Home Alabama, I Aint The One, Freebird, Tuesday's Gone, That Smell, The Ballad Of Curtis Loew, Working For MCA, Dont Ask Me No Questions, On The Hunt. Watched Allied last night - quite good - and the whole of the second series of BBC Motherland, which was every bit as brilliant as the first series. Also recently finished watching the BBC serialised verson of The Name Of The Rose. Enjoyed it but still think I preferred the film version. RACING BACK ON MONDAY ![]() ![]() so that's the end of this thread for me lads.Nice to 'chat' with you 626, Mads and Shane. Best of luck with your horses - as long as they're not running against one of mine!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |
