mads! Way we've been playing I might even get a game even though I've turned 60!
Saturday: Almost finished digging while listening to Layla And Other Assorted Lovesongs. One more session on Monday morning I reckon. Watched Littlewoods Cup Final 1988 on the LTFC website in the afternoon. Luton 3 Arsenal 2...the greatest football match I have ever been to; even better than being at 1983's Man City 0 Luton 1 (although the latter was of more long term importance in that we stayed in the top division a further nine years on the back of winning at Maine Road).
Watching Rocket Man this evening.
Nearly finished reading 'Rogues' a 2014 collection of 21 short stories. Very good ones by Joe Abercrombie and Matt Hughes. Have yet to read the Neil Gaiman and G R R Martin ones. Very disappointed with the Scott Lynch one, considering he has written my all time favourite novel 'The Lies Of Locke Lamora'. Think either the Springsteen or Elton John autobiography is next up.

Glorious day out the Arsenal game Group of us with huge England flag to the left of one of the goals Never seen it since - must try harder Had Ex tape it then she stuck Eastenders over it a few weeks later Made up for the 'easy' cup final few weeks before- Simod Took her to it Outplayed, outfanned Don't think we ever won a game when she came

Yeah...Simod was awful. Hot favs and lost 4-1 to Reading. Gilkes scored a hat-trick? FA Cup Semi at White Hart Lane same season was even worse though. Favs to beat Wimbledon and totally outplayed. The 1985 semi at Villa Park broke my heart...we were underdogs to Everton but outplayed them for 90 mins yet lost 2-1 in extra time. 1994 semi v Chelsea at Wembley (on the day Minniehoma won the National) was another disappointment, losing 2-0 to Chelsea (although they were so much better than us that 5-0 would have been a fairer score). Sunday: Still ended up digging but this time in the garden for she who must be obeyed. Had a Dandy Warhols morning and listened to Dandys Rule OK, Thirteen Tales... and Odditorium... Questionmaster for a family quiz again in the afternoon. Watching Countryfile, Antiques Roadshow and Killing Eve this evening. Recording Van Der Valk. Stay safe.

Everton was another great day out - apart from result Atmosphere electric, crowd rocking. Should have been ours Funny memory of the day still sticks with me All the fans buying flags on the way to ground Only for the police to confiscate them on trying to get into ground Don't get me started on the old first division pasting teams 6's & 7's every week Still hanging onto programmes of that era for some reason Nostalgia ain't what it used to be

I have a loft full of programmes going back to the 1967-68 Division 4 winners season when you had the actual Luton leaflet inside a magazine called the Football League Review I think? Haven't bothered with buying programmes for many years now but have never felt able to throw all my old ones away (I also have about 30 years worth of Chelt, Aintree and R Ascot S Lifes & R Posts if anyone wants them!). Went 67'68 to 73/74. Then missed a couple of seasons when my grandad/dad stopped going and I wasn't old enough to drive. Then went to virtually every home game from 76/77 to 91/92 and also visited 30 odd grounds following them around the country. Marriage and kids then much reduced my visits for a few years until my son was old enough to become keen to go. Have attended regularly since 2002 although usually only half a dozen games per season. Having said that, I became a season ticket holder again two years ago, as is my son (we're behind the goal in the Kenny End).
Anyway - Monday: Finished digging last little bit of allotment but then spent several hours digging back garden. Listened to The Free Story (twice). Then went for a Dinosaur Jr session and played Farm, I Bet On Sky, Get A Glimpse Of What Yer Not and Hand It Over (Where You Been is still their best one though). Toss-up between Godzilla or Men In Black 4 at 21:00 tonight.

i played on the plastic twice, and the one at Vauxhall Motors in a County Cup game. My girlfriend came with me to a few games for the first few seasons after we dated and before we married. She went once this season when my boy couldnt make it. She was at JPTF, 88 and 89 LCF, York and Wimbledon National League playoff finals. Like you, I must confess to going to watch someone else for a couple of seasons when my lad was too young....watched Rushden and Diamonds quite a bit the season they won the Conference and the one before that. Diamonds was only 10 miles from me, Luton is 30.

In the early 1980s, when Liverpool FC were trying to commercialise their success, they planned to release (amongst many other things) a branded aftershave. Their marketing agency contacted one of the hottest celebs of the time, Yul Brynner, to be the face of their advertising campaign. However, the whole deal ultimately fell through because Yul never wore cologne

Tuesday: Rain stopped play. Caught up with latest two episodes of Better Call Saul. No more til next year. Watch series 1 of After Life...very good.
Wednesday: Still raining on and off. Cut some asparagus. Took delivery of eight very good quality clematis from Taylors of Sutton. Watched/watching Oh Brother! Where Art Thou? and The Untouchables, neither of which I'd seen for a long time. Will probably watch Brightburn at 21:00.
Jesus man....I need some horseracing!!!!!

Saturday: Walked dog. Played Born To Run twice. Made a load of 4ft long, 8in diameter support tubes using 5ft plastic coated metal canes, green PVC coated 2ft x 4in x 2in wire and small cable ties for my tomatoes. Wed: Sh!te night. Dog wanted to go out at 3.00am. Wouldnt come back in....spent 10 mins at 2degC in boxers, t-shirt and slippers coaxing it back in. Then took best part of 90mins for me to ge back to sleep. Got up aout 10.30 as a consequence - at least 3 hours later than normal. No music. Watched Return To Oz on the Disney channel - nowhere near as good as my kids and myself used to think it was! Then just sat around eating bacon sarnies and drawing planting schemes of my garden/allotments. Social beers across the fence again at 16.30.....it's good when your mates are under contract to the house next door! Bottles of Landlord, Champion, Envy, Doom Bar and Bombadier happily consumed while putting the world to rights. Need to leave the village tomorrow for first time for at least 2 months! ....have to find some compost and gravel/grit somewhere to enable me to carry on with planting.

sixtwosix...I saw you on the Disney Channel yesterday!
Yeah, we signed the Futchers from Chester I think. Sold them to Man City. Paul was much better than Ron.
Best central defender we've ever had in my years of watching was Mal Donaghy. £20K from Larne. 10 years service at the top end (and well over 50 caps for N Ireland) without any injuries as I remember it. Then sold him to Man Utd for £750K. Honourable mentions to Eliott, Foster, Curtis and Steve Davies, Heikennen, Boyce. We had Upson as well but dont think he ever played a league game for us before we sold him to Arsenal.

Not sure about Pembridge or Preece at CM (Preece used to hang out in my bookies in Round Green - sad case) Antic for sentiment, Grealish and Bible boy West Findlay / Chamberlain GK Aizlewwod LB for his screamers Paul Price RB But i am biased timewise
Upson played 2 mins as sub and sold for 2 mill to Arsenal - great business

Ron was our top scorer in 85/6 , the first year of the play offs. We finished third but lost to Leeds who finished fourth on away goals ........doesn't happen now. We took a 2-1 aggregate lead in the 89th minute .....they equalised 15 seconds. Leeds lost in a third game to Charlton who were the team from botton of first division in play offs......doesn't happen now either.
If my memory is not fading Ron was sent off twice in a week which meant he could not take part in the play offs .....we loaded the skyscraper Ian Ormandroyd who played in his place.

Thurs: Went to a local Farm Shop....bloody great queue so thought sod that. Looked in another one - £6.00 for 70 litres of some brand I'd never heard of so left it. Took dog for a walk. Looked on line for compost...thieving bastards everywhere! 100 litres for £33.33 on ebay. Went to Wellingboro to vets to get some tablets for the dog (she's old - nearly 14 - and a bit arthritic). Thought about calling at B & Q but long queue and 'no compost' sign. Tried B & M Wellingboro: no queue and plenty of Westland compost at just £8.95 for 120 litres! Bought 8 bags. No gravel though. Back to planting up tomatoes tomorrow.

LTFC 1989/90 survival season currently on the official club website. 88 mins long. Chamberlain, Breacker, Dreyer, Beaumint, Black, Preece, Wegerle, Spring....Also Linekers first game for Spurs I think was opening game of season? Paul Stewart. Gascoigne, Whelan, Rush, Grobb, great to see some old names running around on your screen.
Famous for Harford deliberately scoring a great headed own goal for Luton [as a Derby player] in last game of season to keep Luton up...I was lucky enough to be there. He has always infered it was intended....but never officially admitted it a such....legend!!!
Watch it and judge....a classic header from a great header of the ball....enough said!
Lots of tomato-ing. Lots and lots of socially distanced drinking.
Have a good and seriously reflective VE Day.

Loved M & W fishing series (tv). Superb banter about some serious life reflections. And I'm a fisherman myself so doubly interesting. I'm a southerner but I agree with you 626 that it's breakfast, dinner, tea, supper. 'What about brunch' my kids say. 'IT'S BRINNER' I tell them"!!!.
Never seen The Americans but will have a look seeing as you quite rightly call Better Call Saul as top notch. I assume you enjoyed Breaking Bad/El Camino also? Chernobyl is the only one that beats them all for me. For their time Homicide: Life On The Streets was brilliant and I still love watching Frasier every day on CH4 (even though I own the box set!).
Friday: Made some more tomato supports. Potted on some more tommy plants. Socially distanced but extended drinking for VE Day. Too many different brews to bother to list. Dog didn't get a walk...

11.4 miles cycling. Finished the fishing book. Sat in the garden all afternoon . Watching the tadpoles and frogs in my wildlife pond. Radio Manchester had a program on our title winning Second division game in 1991 that took us to the old division 1. Going into the game West Ham had to beat Notts County at home for the title .....they lost 2-1 to County who got the fourth promotion spot in the playoffs. 20,000 packed into Boundary Park , Sheff Wed take the lead and all their fans in the home end celebrated ,were ejected delaying our game. Sheff Wed go 2 up after 50 minutes . We scored on 60 and 80 to make it 2-2 , needing the win. 93 minutes we get a penalty and go up as champions.
Watching Vietnam War , 18 hour documentary ......18 hours not enough it is so good.

They intervened because of the concept of the 'Domino Effect' , country after country falling to communism in Asia. It was a spellbinding quality documentary. I too drank Boddies , they took over OB (Oldham Brewery).

Not much to report...dog, garden, allotment - normal everyday tasks. Watched Luton 2 Man Utd 1 from 1985 on the official website. Very windy here Sunday/Monday. Watched Argo...OK.
Listened to my Spotify Tom Waits Ballards playlist twice - 128 songs and a bit over 8 hours play time - the man is a genius. Wonderful songs such as Jersey Girl, Wherever I Lay My Head, The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me), Downtown Train, Hold On, Innocent When You Dream, Cold Water, Come On Up To The House, The House Where Nobody Lives, You Can Never Hold Back Spring, Bottom Of The World and the absolute classic that is I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You. Brilliant!!!
Still no closed track, socially distanced racing! But hey! We can all cram onto the tubes and trains and travel to enclosed spaces to spread the virus far and wide so long as we are going to work, which is of course so much more important than anyone's life.
At least I'm allowed to go fishing from tomorrow

Dennis Irwin was something special , how he was release by Leeds I will never know. He played for us for 4 years and the only time I ever recall a winger giving him a bad time was Chris Waddle for Spurs in a cup tie......and there is no shame on that .
In terms of how good he was , lots of United fans still don't realise he was a right back, he never played left back for us. He played left back because their other full back could not . He spent a decade on the wrong side ........name me many other full backs who could do that.

I remember that he was rightfooted. A truly great player that was very underestimated imo.
It was for only one season but James Justin is a right back who had to play left back for Luton in 2018/19 promotion season before we sold him to Leicester last summer for £8m. Couldn't get a game at RB in front of Jack Stacey (who we also sold, to Bournemouth for £4m at the same time. In fact, he only got called into the first team when regular LB Dan Potts got injured.
How I wish we still had them both.
Gonna cut my privet hedge today then have a socially distanced drink over the garden fence with neighbour this afternoon again.
Still playing Tom Waits ballads over and over. Time I moved onto some Lynyrd Skynyrd I think, whom I was lucky enough to see in London in Jan '77 (Odeon or Rainbow? - programme's up in the loft) before before they crashed and burned in the October. I remember they were supported by a band called Clover who went on the become Huey Lewis And The News!
Watched The Head Hunter last night....OK but very predictable from about halfway through. Also watched Treasure Planet - yes, the Disney film! - one of my favourite animated films.
I remember that he was rightfooted. A truly great player that was very underestimated imo.It was for only one season but James Justin is a right back who had to play left back for Luton in 2018/19 promotion season before we sold him to Leicester last
When The Old Grey Whistle Test finished , viewers were asked which song to finish the final episode .....they choose Freebird.
Finished watching Brassic , enjoyed it very much.
My potato plants looks miserable after 3 nights of frosts.
Been listening to Tromple Le Monde by Pixies(my fav ever band) , Closer (Joy Division) and Carpenters Greatest Hits ......I live punk , indie , metal .....and the voice of Ms Karen Carpenter.

Goodbye To Love contains my fav ever guitar solo...so melancholy, poignant and so beautifully fits the song.
Liked Joy Division a lot and Closer is a great film. Age Of Consent and Ceremony by New Order even better songs I reckon (Galaxie 500 do a fine version of the latter).
Pixies Here Comes Your Man is on one of my Spotify favs playlists. Should've (but haven't) listened to them more closely...Cannonball by The Breeders is an excellent song that I have on the same playist.
Female vocalists: Joan Armatrading has always been my fav, also love Annie Lennox, Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Chrissie Hynde, Martha Davis (The Motels). Best ever female singing performance (lyrics) - Brandi Carlile: The Story, then Yvonne Fair: It Should've Been Me. Best ever female vocal performance - Claire Torry: The Great Gig In The Sky on DSOTM - spine tinglingly good!
My potatoes in 10 litre pots in garden (set early January in greenhouse but put outside a couple of weeks ago) have been ok during the last few days but my allotment ones, which are only 1/2 mile away, have been totally fried!!! Normally they will come back (hopefully!) but they will be later and lower yields.

Now about to watch the LTFC 1990/91 review on the club website, where we escaped relegation on the last game of the season for the third year in a row I think...and also the final time.

Yes...and we lost at Notts County the final game of the next season when a lat game victory would have kept us up again for the fourth season in a row. Supporting LTFC is never boring. And so....just like Liverpool, we have never won the Premier League. Although we do have the excuse of never having played in it! Night all.

Cycling up some steep hills this morning , in the wrong gear to make it even harder ......made me feel good knowing I could still do it... being very old but with the thighs of an Olympic sprinter. Tennis with my 21 year old son tomorrow , can't wait..... he does live in my house , completed his 4 years Physics degree yesterday ......what does the world hold for people like him now ?
Watching Dortmund go 2-0 up playing in either a bathroom or swimming pool.
Had 70 pears from my tree last year , but not many fruits on it this year. Lots of fruit bushes that look covered in buds .....never labelled them , so no idea what they will produce.
Started watching Black Book last night , never saw it when it was on , very Father Ted / IT Crowd not surprisingly with the same writer. I have worked in IT for 37 years and love the IT Crowd.

I have Black Books boxset! I feel the need to rewatch my Eary Doors boxset...loved it. I believe the original idea was to move The Royale Family to a pub setting for a series but they eventually decided to run with a new set of characters

Just watched the first 4 episodes of the BBC adaption of 'The Name Of The Rose'. Very good. Saw the Connery/Perlman/Slater film of the same a few years ago which was also very good.

Went walking with the missus today. Her asthma played up yesterday , cycling in the cold weather.
Went to a garden centre
The roads were busier than a week day.
Rewatching Underbelly , never come across an Aussie drama anywhere close as good to it.
Name Of The Rose ,the film is good ....recall the tv series , but don't recall what I thought of it.

The Closer album can still hold it`s own, like Movement & Power,Corruption & Lies too.
New Order`s peak lasted 7 years, longer than The Beatles

From a personal point of view , not being able to see my son graduate fills me with such sadness and misery.
Irrelevant as it may be to people losing their lives and livelihood , this is the worst impact on myself at this time .

I can also understand your disappointment 626, watching them graduate is a very proud day and I'm lucky enough that all my three did .
Planted out all my runners, climbing french, dwarf french, courgettes and sweetcorn today. Onions looking good. Picked a second meal of broad beans and a a umpteenth crop of asparagus. Carrots look really poor germination rate - think I need to re-sow most varieties.
Desperate for some racing....can't bring myself to study the french stuff. Haven't had a bet since 24th March!!!

Got up pretty early - dog wanted to go out - watched Disney's Black Cauldron - awful! - then ended up watching Escape From Sobibor (2018, not the older R Hauer version) which was quite good. Went to a garden centre!!! Bereft of any annuals but got the bark and pea gravel that I went for. Bought a nice dwarf conifer for my front garden and wife bought a nice heuchera for the back. Resisted buying any more clematis. Made some more obelisks for my clematis. Didn't play any music at all. Watched The A Word.

Going to rewatch the oddity that was The Leftovers again .....got some great music in it.
Peas are doing very nicely , spuds look a little better. Yams gone outside now.
Will be cycling up steep hills in hot weather today .

The roads are absolutely rammed , this is the most bizarre version of supposed lockdown.
It looks like people 'furloughed' and a lot of people who are supposedly working from home are actually out driving to goodness knows where all day.

Went cycling , roads busier than ever.... nobody is staying home.
Been told I am working from home for the rest of the year. I am 56 and had already decided I am working from home till retirement ......just haven't told them yet . I work in IT writing code and have since the Jurassic era ......still hard to believe people pay me to do this , I love writing programs (apps to the youngsters).
Watching Harry's football program. Reading Dennis Lillee's autobiog .....I love old sport .

Good stuff mad . I have recently cashed in my 30 year deferred pension .....I also got VR seven years ago. All put aside whilst I still choose to work , if things don't improve I will at least be able to give my son a helping hand.
When I first started in IT , it was in the era of punched cards , paper tape , magnetic tape and exchangeable disk drives. I started work at 18 and within 6 months was in charge of a shift on a mainframe computer . I am often asked why I appear so laid back during any crisis at work ......after that responsibility level at such a young inexperienced age anything since has been a breeze.
Watching Heimat again , it is on sky Arts .

They are NZ Yams , also called oka. They grow underground like small potatoes. Can be cooked , but I like them raw. Go outside after frosts and you leave them till the frost totally kills the foliage. They only produce tubers when the nights draw in , pick them earlier and nowt in the ground.

I did manage to get a biochemistry degree but took me until I was 24 as I left school after A levels and went day release to polytechnic instead of Uni to do HNC then BSc. I wanted to be paid to do my further education and, coming from a family of market gardeners I didn't feel it was the thing to do to go to Uni and leave my dad and granddad running the farm on their own. Going to local poly meant I was always still around in evenings and at weekends to help, so I went and worked for the local R&D department of a large multinational who paid me to continue my education and further my career. Never left them; worked my whole life for the same company (42 years service) doing interesting and very varied background research work. Being in local employment also meant I was still around at weekends to help on farm and go see LTFC. Plus I married a girl from the next village and that became really handy for free baby sitting eventually, living just a few miles away from both sets of parents.
Resowed all my carrots and put some swede seed down yesterday plus weeded my onion sets. Today I'm planting out some of the dozen or so clematis/honeysuckles/jasmine that I ordered this spring.
Still listening to Tom Waits' ballads all the time...must get onto Skynyrd. Watched one of my fav lighthearted films this morning....'That Thing You Do'

Finally dragged my self away from Tom Waits' songs to listen to Skynyrd. Ironic that the best song I felt they ever recorded was the cover of J J Cale's 'Call Me The Breeze', one of the few that weren't penned by the band themselves. First album (Pronounced...) still the best (although Simple Man is a duffer). Second album (Second Helping) also a classic |(except for I Need You) Third one (Nuthin Fancy) was pretty good but fourth (Gimme Back My Bullets) much less so. Street Survivors, the fifth and final one (I regard the band as finished after the plane crash) was back up there, almost as good as the first one (but with a much different, more honky-tonk sound). Top ten tracks for me: CMTB, Sweet Home Alabama, I Aint The One, Freebird, Tuesday's Gone, That Smell, The Ballad Of Curtis Loew, Working For MCA, Dont Ask Me No Questions, On The Hunt.
Watched Allied last night - quite good - and the whole of the second series of BBC Motherland, which was every bit as brilliant as the first series. Also recently finished watching the BBC serialised verson of The Name Of The Rose. Enjoyed it but still think I preferred the film version.
RACING BACK ON MONDAY so that's the end of this thread for me lads.
Nice to 'chat' with you 626, Mads and Shane. Best of luck with your horses - as long as they're not running against one of mine!!

Yes ,looking forward to UK and Irish racing returning.
Listening to LCD , Electric Lady Sessions .....not really heard them before , a bit like the Human League I think.
Watching the Lance Armstrong documentary , read so many books on this era ......I watched it all and never believed what I was seeing.
Twelve mile bike ride today .
