How are the mighty fallen! And the last shall be first! (That's enough cliches: ed) That's the story of a gripping finale to this month's terrific competition. There was top2rated, sitting high on the hog as undisputed leader from the second day, after a stonking 28/1 strike. A few more since suggested he would still be there come the day of fools. But then this young upstart from the back of beyond snatched it from him, and from the pretender to the throne, at the last gasp!
Like top2, buffythebookieslayer got a winner on the second day, but it was a mere 5/2. And it looked like being his only winner of the month as sorry loser followed sorry loser. He sank to the foot of the table, drowning in the impenetrable murk of the pit of everlasting nothingness, as the bookies looked on and let out loud belly laughs. But buffy is a fighter who never knows when to give up and on the final day he had the last laugh as Misu Mac crashed the party in the 2.55 at Southwell and won at a truly staggering 66/1! By far and away the best nap of the final day in all divisions. Some curmudgeons may say it was jammy, who knows? I say he went for it, he got it. Exceptionally well done to him!
That's not to say a silent tear might not be shed for both top2 and DFCIRONMAN, for whom second place hardly seems a just reward for such a staggering final run of five winners on the bounce - 6/1 4/1 12/1 7/4 and today's hearty 9/1 on Free Of Charge. It would have been more than enough to push him above the winless t2r at the finish but the crown had already been snatched from his grasp by the slayer! Hard luck DFC after such a humungous effort. Let's not forget that it was kicked off by a fabulous 25/1 winner on the 13th. Don't get to see many performances of such quality.
And real hard luck to topr2rated, who hit a dry spell in the final straight after that initial stunner and another 12/1 four days later, with four smaller winners adding to the tally. It was still a stellar performance.
And a big well done to the three others who rise to the dizzy heights of Div 2: Whippin Piccadilly, with the highest strikle rate at 55%, a shock absentee today after banging in six straight winners, his highlight being the 14/1 he pinned three days ago; undecided, who had two 8/1 wins and a 14/1 and hit second at one point, but missed out a few days and had bad luck at the last; and of course our resident shortie king motseel, who might like his prices small but needed a 16/1 stonker to get him over the line.
Some great performances all round this month. It's been a cracker.
Just a special mention for the day's only other winner, murton99, 5/1 better off on Toto Skyllachy, which put him up eight to mid-table. Hard luck to those who didn't make it and commiserations for the wooden spoonists, but as you all know form changes. They well come good. Thanks guys. Yes i had a small bet on it. The reason why i backed it was when i looked through the card, this was by far the worst with 3 runners who for me had shown nothing at all in the way of speed and Misu Mac who i thought showed a glimmer of ability on it's last run having led early on. Sometimes even bad horses can win races if they find the right conditions which just happened to fall right for Misu Mac on this occasion.
