Tightfisted takes what few "honours" were going today with his third winner in a row, the 3/1 Gatewood at Ascot. But, with three non-runners among them, it was all quiet at the top apart from dukeofpuke landing a 9/4 nap: not quite the champagne winner its name suggests, but enough to place him tantalisingly close to the promo zone. Pretty quiet down the bottom too - c'mon Trusty & Co, where's those 20/1 blockbusters I asked for? Sad

Good luck tomorrow folks. Excited

Sir Reginald - 4.25 Asc

Thanks Reged; it's a long way from the bottom to the top so here's hoping we can get there in one go!

Hate all those stupid instructions. Think the organisers should consider only a very simple instruction FRF or LRF and that's it. All these tipsters instructions are a lot to manage imo. Very honest of lag to come forward and disqualify his own selection. 6 meetings 40 odd tipsters. AGG AGG AGG and I am not settling. Mischief

I had no idea how complicated it could get when I started this Trusty. I've actually done a decision flowchart mapping out all the questions that have to be answered before the final pick can be entered - looks like a map of a circuit board! I've managed to automate a fair bit of it but, obviously, there's still a way to go! Sad

Reggy/all - For what it`s worth i feel instructions should be simplified ie first or last race fav or even last race fav only. Doesn`t affect me too much in the premier though a few problems have arisen. Seems more work in Div 3 for different reasons.

If someone has Newsboy`s nap you have to check it every day no matter what against the time of the selection and if they post their time etc. Even first race fav can cause trouble.

Well as I say shane, it can be automated - I just haven't finished doing the necessary. But I actually agree that I don't really like instructions per se. Hardly makes it a test of personal napping ability does it?

Maybe bluenose, but NR's aint so bad because at least you don't lose a point. It's when there's no selection for one reason or another, that's the prob area.

. . . I don't really like instructions per se. Hardly makes it a test of personal napping ability does it?

No it doesn't. You're absolutely right. But how do you ever know on what basis anyone makes a selection? Can you ever be sure that a selection was personally chosen by any player?
You can't. So the first question is whether or not instructions should be allowed at all.

There are any number of reasons why a player may not be able to post a selection, and I think most of us would agree that instructions should be allowed, and that the number allowed per month should be restricted, which it is.
I think we've all at some time thought "You lucky bugger" when a 9/2 LRF goes in and the player shoots up 10 places as a result. There's an element of feeling hard done by. But there really shouldn't be.
The essence of any instruction is that it must be a selection which the player could have made himself had he been able to do so. But the fact that it was randomly selected makes us view it differently. It's illogical, but human nature.

So, the only real question is what Instructions should be allowed.

I had intended to draw up some guidelines this month and circulate them to the other settlers for discussion, but I haven't even had time to make a start on it yet.
But I have given it some thought and it seems to me that the decsion about what instructions to accept or decline should probably be left up to the settler of each division. After all, he's the one giving up his time, and instructions can be unneccessarily time-consuming sometimes. It doesn't take very long to to update the spreadsheet every day, but instructions can double that time if there's a lot of them to check. It may even be a barrier to new settlers coming forward if they think it's overly complicated.

The default instruction of Last Race Favourite is the easiest one to deal with of course, and as a random way of chosing a selection it's as good as any other and better than nothing.
So to what extent and on what basis should other instructions be considered?
And do the wishes of the players themselves matter?
Or is the settler's time and convenience the only thing which should be considered?

Personally I have no problem accepting pretty much any instruction in Div2 and I've always done my best to accomodate everyone. But I've been lucky in that the majority of players with instructions always post their selection well before the 1hr Rule comes into play, or they don't post at all if they've missed the deadline. I rarely have to do any checking.
But other settlers may not be quite so fortunate; hence my suggestion that perhaps it should be left to the discretion of each individual settler in each divison.
