yeah I did know it's them, had to deal with those mugs by email when I was put on the naughty step for 30 days during the US Open last year.

Brits are priced out, but not only that, when me and friend from school used to share costs to spend an hour on a tennis court, we were frowned upon by the adults who didn't want us there. That's why it's still seen as middle class sport, run by snobs, taken part by snobs.

Judy Murray said with the money they spent on the white elephant Tennis centre at Roehampton which cost 40 mil, they should have spent 1 mil each on tennis centres all around the country instead, which was a much better, more common sense idea.

In Rugby, there is the same problem, the former England coach Eddie Jones, who was an Aussie, tried calling out the same thing, citing too many private school kids in the game etc, he lost his job not long after.

Spot on mes. Tennis really isn't welcome and encouraged for those below middle class. Why the UK struggles so much. Look at football, open to the lower classes and UK does very well with bringing in great talent.

Probably Caramba, I don't really know. I just think the UK could be bringing up some great talent if tennis was more accessible to all. Better systems in place in the US for sure, though they've relatively failed given their previous generations.

Places like Czech Republic and France that have always had an endless conveyor belt of talent coming through, have generally cheap access to courts, the French Tennis Federation subsidises their courts, so I heard them say one year in ITV at the French open.

Like "Come and meet Andy Murray day" or Emma Raducanu when she was fresh off her win. On this day let every kid that comes have a hit with a racket, with other kids/teachers. Then if teachers spot a diamond in the rough, talk to the parents, invite them to some free training sessions and see if there's any potential. Won't reach every kid that way, but probably more than they do now.

could do this with Jack or Emma now, they don't play much tennis so will have plenty of time on their hands :)

To be honest, going back though the years, you only have to listen to how the majority of Brit players speak, they are very plummy voiced / well spoken = middle class background. Some good exceptions like the Murray brothers and Dan Evans though. But on the whole they mostly sound like Heather Watson.

This years ago, initially gave me the impression that those from middle class, affluent backgrounds, didn't have the stomach for the fight, so you needed more working class kids who grew up in tougher backgrounds.

However, you then look at Nadal, who's uncle played for Barcelona, and who had a very comfortable upbringing, yet you could not find a bigger fighter than what he was, same with Federer, comfortable upbringing, always went to the well.

So I can only assume it's a British thing.

hmmm mes... nadal a fighter, certainly. can never remember seeing him give up. fed on the other hand, no. gave up plenty of times in his career

I remember playing on horror tennis courts at school. Some ridiculously good players who had never played before and never did again as facilities and engagement just aren't there. Must be 10s of thousands of very talented players slipping through the system, and with hunger too.

the most egregious example being against millman at the us open. even said so himself, couldnt wait to get off the court because it was too humid.

I wont defend fed as I wasn't his biggest fan, but I look at it on the whole not individual matches where he was genuinely sweating buckets, and he never sweated. Gave us some epics against the two biggest fighters of all time. You can't win 20 slams and come through all sorts of players and playing styles over the best part of 15+ years unless you have fight in you.

Was sweating in that match against Milkman at the US Open :(

Fed was a freak. Murray is the blueprint for UK. Exceptional player, but must be quite a few with his heart and fight and close to raw talent as a youth which simply are not discovered because of the way things are in the UK.

My favourite Federer moment was when he was trying to explain basic physics to Lahyani on the blue clay of Madrid when the ball bounced twice, and he didn't quite understand.

The only reason why Murray ended toup being the player he was, was because he didn't come though the abject LTA system, he and Judy recognised the best way forward was to move to an academy overseas, so he had to go to the Sanchez Casal academy in Barcelona to get proper training from the age of 15, helped him with the clay as well, not many clay courts in Britain at all, and he made it all the way to the French open final taking the first set, as well as winning Rome and Madrid.

federer had 60+ slams to go at. he didnt need fight to win the percentage of those that he did. some of his losses were dreadful, raonic at wimbledon ten years ago another good example of what i mean.
By:

federer mainly won on talent, not fight. imo

forgot about anderson at wimbledon as well. dont tell me he was fighting in that match. when it started to get away from him he did nothing to turn it around

There are only 4 players in history who on 10 or more occasions, have come back from 2-0 down to win 2-3, and one of those is Federer. Murray the most with 11, Becker on 10, and another player I doubt anyone knows. But that is fight.

is that really to their credit though. some of those matches were against players they were supposed to beat comfortably but they mugged for a couple of sets first. again is it fight that turned those matches around or did they just start playing properly having failed to take their low ranked opponents seriously
By:
tobiasr
When: 28 May 26 21:49
also youd expect the best players to be able to turn matches around on ability alone. doesnt have to be a blanket explanation of fight

a slight tangent, but you think of football in India and China.

Not a single person can name a Chinese or Indian footballer, yet the population combined is 1/3 of the worlds population.

Can you imagine the sheer amount of untapped talent there, yet because football is not culture there, it will remain untapped, 3 billion people and nobody knows a single footballer from those 2 countries.

It's like any country, in the UK with Tennis, there's lots of untapped talent, but most of the talent is never harnessed because just like with Basketball, once they leave school, they've nowhere to go with it in this country. Whereas scouting in football in the UK is literally everywhere.

true mes. india could be and its the same as china, on the basis of population if nothing else, one of the best football nations in the world. but its not a sport they embrace

Sinner today should have been the biggest gubbing of all time given the score, but I suppose Sinner's recent struggles in the heat and the fact there were lots of other matches going on at the same time prevented that from being the case.
