·26m One of the greatest experiences I have had in my 50+ years in tennis has been helping coach @DonnaVekic since October 2022. Here in LA, it’s been a challenging year, therefore I need to lean even more into my community & my family’s wellbeing. I am stepping down from Team DV. |

No wild card for Lois (despite her generating a load of interest in tennis) No qualifying wild card for Lois.
Five million wildcards for every Brit under the sun including top 10 famous Brit Hevva! I hear they even tried to defrost Alec Bogdanovic to come out of retirement so they can give him a wildcard. Expect mes to be fuming. |

By:
Linda N quite sharp against plucky Brit Fran and a decent QF draw.
My guess is she's probably going to win Nottingham at 7.2 then go out in the first round of Wimbledon to some claycourter. |
By:
you should advise Linda that Nottingham is only a 250 and her efforts would be more fruitful at SW19

Noskova's career and form are not in the place where she can decide where to try.

This is Hevva's 6th Wimbledon Wildcard.
Let's assume she crashes out in the first round here. Then she will have earned £232,750 in prize money from Wimbledon wild cards. Her total prize money is currently $5.8M. After Wimbledon that will mean 5.4% of her total prize money comes from Wimbledon wild cards. There must be players who has a ridiculously high percentage of total prize money coming from home slam wild cards, likely some Frenchie or Brit. It's very silly though. There should be 0-2 WC's to award at Slams, and only for big stars coming back from injury or retirement. And for the latter they will need to have shown some form like Clijsters in 2009. |
By:
For Hevva's first two WC's she got £11,250 each. Nowadays she's cashing in £60k per each WC. For 2023-25 she has gotten £175,000 in wild card money for 3 tournaments.

meanwhile Maky & DiShnai are serving up a Grand Slam final in round 2 of Berlin 500
By:
Leylah against Yastremska will probably be a similarly competitive affair. LAF will give her best effort and has won their only two meetings in three sets (both on hard, never met on grass)
Both did a fair bit of mugging in their last matches but came through at the business end. Yastremska is favourite in the outright but Leylah's match odds are shorter. A third set with lots of breaks seems on the cards. Coinflip the winner tbh. |

wonder what round Saba tanks out of Berlin. doubt she wants to play 5 days on the trot, with them robbing her of her rest day today
By:
Badosa looked good for her first two singles matches, doesn't seem impeded at all. She has to be sensible about her back though in the run up to a slam and I'm somewhat surprised she's still in the doubles as well.

not sure if I can quote you caramba without being double spaced. it's a 500, so although as you say maybe a pure tank isn't on the cards, after a few matches she might decide she's had enough and wants to move on to London to begin preparations for the big one. they've already messed her around yesterday scheduling her last and having to cut her match after a set. Saba's not going to react well to being treated poorly. as I said earlier in the week, if the final on Sunday is Aryna vs Coco then I was wrong
By:
you could have quoted me, I then wouldn't be able to quote you.
Anyway, tanking at events so long before a Slam doesn't really happen. And if they do happen it's for a different reason such as having a wedding to go to, only showing up for the appearance fee, or the combination of a backed-up schedule and an injury. Tanks from top players were very common about 10-15 years when they had premium events the week before the Slams, but these days those final weeks before a Slam is usually reserved for mugs with the occasional vulture like Elise Mertens. |
By:
Sabalenka is mugging pretty hard so no guarantee she's making the final. Same with Coco, who is not the best on grass.
By:
There are lots of players in Berlin who can beat them without any tanking involved.
By:
tanking/not bothered about a 500/not enough time to adapt to the grass/
whatever you wanted to justify it with. |
By:
They are bothered about 500's. Everything pre Aussie Open is 500, players try their hardest there.
By:
for some players, doing well here is a priority and a great opportunity. for others it's a bit of an inconvenience and a way to adapt to grass but not a way to tire themselves out even more after a long clay season
By:
So this tanking at 500 theory you have, is that Berlin only? Would you say Carlos are Jannik are likely to tank the grass events they are in this week. It's the exact same scenario as Sabalenka.
By:
maybe tanking is the wrong word. it's not pure tanking like you point out the biggest names would do the week before a slam 10 years ago, but it's not being as motivated/focused/prepared as they would be for 1000 events and Slams
By:
especially when the tournament is quite poorly organised like WTA Berlin, although they have made some improvements to the tournament from 12 months ago so that's good to hear
By:
500/1000 is the same in this sense imo. Like they wouldn't go all out as much as they would in a Slam. Be more likely to retire if slightly injured. The other player would be less nervous closing out a match in a 500/1000 than a Slam.
By:
such a tank from taylor harry. moutet is rubbish
By:
I mean if this week was a Grass 1000, whether in Berlin or elsewhere, I don't think it would make a difference to the results.
Results on grass are always going to more random than on other surfaces. |
